She will be best remembered for her eloquence and lifelong passion for music. Born in Scotland in 1925, Elaine was a well-known lead soprano in operatic productions. After immigrating to Canada she became an important figure in, and ardent advocate of, Alberta’s musical community, eventually winning the Alberta Government Achievement Award for personal excellence. Notably, Elaine founded and directed a girls choir, with whom she won the National Competitive Festival of Music in 1987. I admit it is also fun for the staff to get to interact with the seniors in a different way and with other Flagstaff seniors’ residents,” says Blumhagen. Floris was born in Sliedrecht, Holland on April 1, 1923. Floris met his future wife, Mary, while she was working as an aide for his ailing mother. Floris was a baker by trade, and during WWII, he was a forced labourer for the Germans in a bakery in Hamburg, Germany. After the war he joined the Dutch Merchant Navy and travelled to many port cities in the world. He eventually returned to Holland to propose to Mary – but Mary refused to marry a sailor. Floris agreed to resign from the Merchant Navy if Mary would move to Canada. Floris and Mary were united in marriage in 1949. In 1951, Rokus (Rocky) Blokland was born in Sliedrecht, Holland. Within the year, the young family immigrated to Canada. They first stayed in Toronto and then moved to Timmins, where Emile was born in 1953. In 1963, Winnifer (Winnie) was born in Brandon, Manitoba. Shortly after Winnie’s birth the family moved to Yellowknife, NWT. The Blokland’s final move was to Stettler in 1966, when they purchased Reg’s Bakery. Floris renamed it Blokes Bakery and it quickly became renowned for its fresh bread, cream johns and pastries! Floris and Mary travelled extensively in their retirement years and saw many sights of the world. Floris also enjoyed gardening, fishing, baking cookies for his Christmas lists, and building furniture sets for all his grandchildren. Predeceased by his wife Blokland Mary and great granddaughter Gracie, Floris is survived by his children; Rocky (Ellie) Blokland, Emile (Gail) Blokland, and Winnie (Ken) Bissett, grandchildren; Angela (Greg) Coulombe, Josh (Jocelyne) Blokland, Jody (Priscilla) Blokland, Kristina (Geoff) Blokland, Ian Blokland, Tim (Tania) Blokland, Kenny (Deanna) Bissett, Tyler Bissett, and Kelsey Bissett, many great grandchildren, other relatives, friends, and special friends Monty and Sharon Sommer. Floris was also “Opa” to Jeff, Karla and Ryan Sommer and their families. According to Kulyk, the section of Norfolk Avenue immediately to the south of the Coronation School is heavily utilized for student and visitor parking. Both sides of the street are consistently lined with vehicles, making it difficult for vehicles to safely pass each other. A suggestion was brought forward to consider removing the grass boulevard on the south side of the street and paving it to widen the one-block section of the street. The current boulevard area is approximately 9.5 feet by 400 feet in size and the existing road width is approximately 36 feet wide. This suggestion would also involve having the curb and gutter installed immediately adjacent to the existing sidewalk. By removing the boulevard, the road would be expanded to a width of approximately 45 feet, the same width as George Street on the east side of the school. This project would also require moving two telephone poles and rebuilding the sidewalks because they would be too high. However after discussing the potential costs involved in this project, council felt the cost was too high. Therefore instead, additional parking will be provided in the town owned lot on the corner of Norfolk and King. Changes will be in effect as soon as signage goes up but will definitely be in place by the first day of school this fall. Bussing an issue in Clearview schools with carbon tax Initial estimates of the new carbon tax will cost Clearview Public Schools the equivalent of one teacher, or approximately $90,000, per year stated a letter from Cheri Neitz, Clearview board chair to the Minister of Education. According to the minutes of the May 24, 2016 municipal government meeting with Clearview Public Schools, Clearview Public Schools would like consideration for school divisions to be exempt from the new carbon tax levy, or that a rebate be provided back to school divisions to offset the additional costs. Neitz went on to say that school divisions are largely dependent on the Alberta Government funding for education. By implementing a levy that will impact school divisions, the net impact would be an education in funding available to students. Council members discussed this issue and accepted it as information. They devised a system to maximize their efforts to achieve both quality and quantity and in less than a month these quick stitchers made a little over 50 quilts to donate as well as an afghan and some blankets. Laurendeau took them to Rose Lefler in Edmonton on Tuesday, June 14 to await distribution. Lefler is a volunteer who offered to hold the quilts until the distribution centre was ready for them. S.
