SYNOPSIS
Dawn of a new autumn day. Somewhere in a small back yard, the camera zooms in on a tree, of which the leaves are falling. Rik, a rainworm,
is eating one of the fallen leaves. Suddenly, his meal is interrupted. The worm looks up:
a magpie is staring at Rik (Rik’s POV in frog perspective, looking at the magpie). The worm is startled and tries to flee, but the bird effortlessly
grabs and devours him.
The magpie sees a spark not too far away. Karel the beetle is trying to make a fire with two pebbles, so he can prepare the mushroom lying next
to him. The critter succeeds in making some smoke, but his joy doesn’t last long: a shadow falls over him.
Karel falls into a dark hole. He looks up and sees Rik the worm, who hastily hides in fear. Karel ignores the worm and looks up: he sees an
esophagus, from which a couple of blood vessels are hanging. The beetle tries to grab onto one of the vessels, so he can climb back up again,
but alas, the opening is up too high. He starts looking around to find a different solution. His eye catches Rik the worm, who, again, scurries
away. An idea dawns on Karel…
Karel jumps onto Rik’s head and points upward. The worm tries to lift Karel as high up as possible, so he can reach the blood vessels.
The magpie is looking for more food and finds a bunch of acorns. Karel manages to grab onto one of the bigger vessels, but loses his balance
when one of the acorns falls onto his head. He falls to the ground and gets rained on by the rest of the acorns. Rik laughs at Karel’s misfortune,
getting a pebble to the head in response. The beetle readies to throw one more stone, but stops to look at it…
A second plan is brought into action: Karel manages to start a fire, by using his pebbles. Meanwhile, Rik blows onto the fire. The magpie is
sleeping on a tree branch. His nap is interrupted when smoke starts coming out of his beak. The bird starts coughing like a chain smoker and
coughs up our duo. The two critters fall down the tree.
Rik and Karel land on the ground. Once they realise they’re back outside, they jump up and down in celebration. Though, not for long: the two
have landed in a chicken coop…

CHARACTERS
Karel Beetle

I immediately had the idea
to make Karel a grumpy
guy. At first he had two
feelers, but to illustrate his
temper even further, I
removed one and replaced
it with a plaster.
Beyond his temper, Karel
can also be very impulsive
and aggressive. On the
other hand, he has a great
sense of initiative.

The Final Marcel
Marcel is seen as the dumbest character of the movie. In contrast to Karel and Rik, the actions
of the magpie are purely based on instinct.

Rik Worm
Rik is a hysterical character
that rather avoids danger
than looking it up. Because
of that characteristic, Rik
was the most fun to
animate: I loved drawing
his expressions and
movements!
