FROM THE
BOTTOM
1. Make a part from ear to ear and section
off the top portion of hair so it’s out
of the way.
2. Working with the loose, free hair,
part off a narrow vertical strip
from the nape of the neck, securing
the sides out of the way.
3. Flip your head forward, then
weave that central section into an
upside-down Dutch braid. To mimic
the look on the previous page created
by hairstylist Sabrina Szinay, loop the
strands under rather than over to form an
inside-out pattern. Secure with an elastic.
4. Divide the remaining loose hair into four equal sections—
two on each side of the central braid.
5. Weave the outermost two sections into upside-down
Dutch braids and secure with hair ties.
6. Gather all your hair into a high ponytail or bun at the crown.

Before you dip your glossy toes
into the Atlantic (or any body of water),
master this polish technique.
File. You want your nails short in the summer—
just below the edge of the toes. “You’ll get less
sand underneath, which will keep the polish
on longer,” says manicurist Deborah Lippmann.
Smooth. Buff your nails to even out ridges, then
massage on cuticle oil.
Prep. Wipe off any oil that got onto your nails
with polish remover and apply a sticky basecoat
to help keep color within the lines.
Paint. Thin coats dry better than a thick, goopy
one, so paint on two sheer layers, waiting a
few minutes between each. Swipe across the
edge with polish to prevent chipping.
Refresh. An extra layer of a topcoat with UV
protection every few days helps keep bright shades
from fading; wiping down nails after applying
sunscreen prevents nudes and pale pinks from
turning yellow.
