YHIS Royals Show Improvement in 0-0 Tie
by CLLOEY JANG
and JENNY KIM
On May 10th, there was a soccer
game between YHIS and Yew
Wah. Earlier in the season, the
YHIS Royals boys’ soccer team lost
to Yew Wah’s U19 (Under-19) soccer
team. However, this game would be
against the U16 (Under-16) team from
Yew Wah.
Before the game started, both teams
warmed up. Arriving on the field first,
the Royals began with passing. Then,
they ran one lap around the field.
Following their completion of the
lap, they stretched their bodies. While
Coach Bond warmed up MJ, the rest
of the players practiced some drills.
Finally, Coach Bond gave some final
instructions to the players.
Prior to the start of the game, the
players and coaches of both teams
lined up to pray and participate in a
minute of silence to honor the lives
lost in the tragedy at Zhongshi Korean
International School in Weihai.
It was a remarkable game that was
full of excitement. The Royals tried
their best to defend well and take shot
offensively when the opportunity arose.
There were many chances for goals, but
unfortunately the Royals were unable to
score. However, Yew Wah was unable to
score as well because of great defending
and excellent goalkeeping by eighth
Daniel Jung uncoils a shot at the Yew Wah goal.
grader MJ Eom. After the completion
of the first half, there was a short break.
Coach Bond adjusted the positions of
the players to provide rest for some of
them. The teams also changed sides.
The second half was also very thrilling.
Both teams had
many chances
to score, but it
was to no avail.
The game ended
with a final
score of 0 to 0.
After the
game ended,
we interviewed
Yew Wah’s best
player, Choi
Won Guang.
His age is 16,
and he is in 9th grade. His position is
forward. He told us that he joined the
soccer team, because it is fun to play
soccer. We asked how he felt when he
competed with YHIS soccer team. He
replied that he was glad to play with our
team. Finally, we were curious about
who his rival on the YHIS team was.
Then he answered, “Brown hair with
glasses,” which describes Nathan Ok.
Then, we interviewed two
more players from YHIS. First, we
interviewed Daniel Jung, a 7th grader,
who played as a right midfielder and
right defender during the game. We
asked the reason why he joined the
soccer team, and he told us that it was
because playing soccer is fun, and it
requires lots of running, so it is good
for his health. Then he said, “Since
there were lots of older players in Yew
Wah soccer team, I was very nervous.
However, it was a fun game.” To end,
we asked his rival in Yew Wah soccer
team. His reply was, “Number 10, Choi
Won Guang, because he is tall, fast, and
his shots are powerful.” The next player
we chose to interview was 9th grader
Neo Kim. Since Neo is recovering from
a minor foot injury, he did not play in
the game. His role was the ball boy. He
told us that he joined the soccer team
because, boys usually become closer
through playing soccer. Also, he can
gain popularity. We asked how he felt
when he competed with Yew Wah team,
and he answered “It was fun, and I was
very proud of our team.” Lastly, he told
us that his rival in Yew Wah team was
Young-Jun Son.
The Royals have shown much
improvement from earlier in the season.
Coach Bond explained, “I am proud of
the effort put forth by the boys. They
have worked hard all season and have
displayed determination and great
team spirit.” The Royals boys’ soccer
team will have one final game against
the YHIS staff. It will be a fun end of
the school year tradition to start. In
order for all YHIS students and staff to
attend, the game will be played during
the school day. It will begin at 2:15 on
Friday, May 26. Parents are welcome to
attend the event.
Prior to play, both teams bow for a moment to
acknowledge the Weihai bus tragedy.
