Saving Sheldon
Skatepark
Sheldon Skate Park was opened on June 5,
2014 and was the largest in the Southeast Valley.
Two years later it was closed by Nury Martinez due
to the amount of damages and vandalism done to the
park. The community complained about the graffiti
and disregard of park safety daily. Loads of sand was
dumped on the park because of the treatment the park
was given.
On March 11 the council and community
held a grand re-opening of Sheldon Skate Park. Over
a hundred skaters and a few pro-skaters joined the
Council of Los Angeles and Congressman Tony
Cardenas, who helped build the park. Skaters in the
community and councilwoman, Nury Martinez made
a partnership and developed a set of 12 rules for the
park. The help of the community invested to repair
the damages and ensures the care and safety of the
park. With the twelve codes of conduct the city can
accomplish of keeping the park. In Nury Martinez’s
“Get it Done”, she says, “When we put in effort as a
community, we develop a bit of a “buy-in” to make
the park something we have a vested interest in. I
have a lot of faith that this new partnership with park
users will keep the park clean.” Sheldon Skate Plaza
is now open to for the community and the public to
enjoy.
