FROM THE DIRECTOR C O N T E N T S
Summer’s finally here, and there’s no better time
than now to take a look at all of the great things
happening at the library!
Starting June 3, our annual Summer Reading
Program begins, and we have a calendar jam-packed
with events and activities to keep you busy all season
long. Get ready to enjoy some of your favorite
summer library activities, as well as some events and
features that are brand new for 2017.
Once again, MIX 105.1 FM kicks will hold summer
celebrations at all of our library branches. They’ll bring
on-air hosts, as well games, prizes and special guests
from Medieval Times – check out page 28 to see
when they’ll be visiting a branch near you! We’re also
bringing back some of our favorite SRP
performers, including Koo Koo Kanga Roo, a zany
dance-pop duo who were a huge hit when they
came to the Orlando Public Library for a live concert
last year. We’ll have them at three library branches
for high-energy shows this month. See page 30 for
locations, dates and times.
For the younger kids, we’ll have appearances
from some of our most popular performers,
including Zoo Mom Science, Mr. Tim the Comedy Magician,
Gigi and Friends and more. Mr. Steve, host of
PBS Kids morning program breaks, returns to the Orlando
Public Library for two appearances in July. See
page 34 for details and our interview with Mr. Steve.
We’ve also got some new and exciting fun in store.
On June 24, we transform the Orlando Public Library
into scenes from your favorite Harry Potter books in
honor of Potterversary, the 20 th anniversary
celebration of the publication of the first Harry Potter
novel. Take a stroll through Diagon Alley, visit the
offices of The Daily Prophet, pretend to go for a ride in
Mr. Weasley’s flying car and sample our secret recipe
for butterbeer. It’ll be a day you won’t soon forget. See
page 31 to find out when the magical fun takes place.
For library lovers of all ages, we’ve also introduced
a new feature on our website to help you keep track
of your summer reading activities. Children and
adults can sign up for Beanstack, a fun and interactive
system that lets you track the books you’ve read, earn
virtual badges for programs you attend and receive
recommendations for new reads based on your
interests. Find out how to sign up for Beanstack on
page 35.
There’s so much going on this summer, and we’ve
only just begun – Summer Reading Program runs
through August 5. Visit ocls.info/srp to learn more
about our programs for kids, tweens, teens and adults.
June 12, 2016 when 49 people were killed at LGBT nightclub
Pulse. Sam Flax donated the art supplies that went into creating
the pieces in this show, which will be on display at the library
through July. The Orlando Gay Chorus will perform, followed by
Latin guitar/percussionists Antone Affronti and Adalberto Bravo.
Participants will be invited to make short videos of themselves
What Has Changed
Orlando Public Library
Thursday, June 15, 6-7:45 p.m.
In September 2016, the Orange County Library System partnered
with local art-supply store Sam Flax for Paint Strong Orlando, an art
show consisting of nearly 300 works of art made in response to the
shooting at Pulse nightclub. All of the art supplies were donated, and
the artists were asked to create work that reflected the strength of the
community.
One year after the Pulse tragedy, the Library is working with Sam
Flax again, this time to present a new show to commemorate Pulse.
Sam Flax has donated the supplies again and this time asks artists to
consider this question: What Has Changed? The show addresses the
impact artists feel the Pulse shooting has had on our community.
On June 15, the Orlando Public Library hosts a reception for the
show, which will include information from various local LGBT nonprofit
organizations. The Orlando Gay Chorus will perform, followed by Latin
guitar/percussionists Antone Affronti and Adalberto Bravo. Participants
will be invited to make short videos of themselves discussing what
they think has changed in our community over the past year.
UPCOMING EVENTS JULY 2017
Interview with Steve Roslonek
of SteveSongs and co-host
of PBS KIDS morning
program breaks!
By Erin Topolsky,
Youth Programs Coordinator
Steve blends participatory
songs, clever stories and great
melodies to create what the
Boston Globe called "not just
a musical journey but an
entertaining, interactive
and educational one."
SteveSongs will be live in
concert Wednesday, July 19 at
10 a.m. at the Orlando Public
Library and 3:30 p.m.
at the Chickasaw Branch
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
Well, almost 20 years ago
(wow) my brother, who was
a first grade teacher at the
time, asked me if I could write
some songs about the days of
the week and seasons. I did
and he shared them with his
school. The feedback from the
kids and teachers was very
positive, so I got together with
some friends who were in
a rock band and we recorded
an album. A few months after
that, I left my corporate job
and have been making and
singing songs for kids and
families ever since (though I
have taken some vacations
along the way).
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE
SONG TO PERFORM?
My favorite song to perform
tends to change as I write
new songs. I love playing
"Song Without a Rhyme" for
people. I just wrote a whole
new version called "Song Full
of Rhymes" which I debuted in
Hawaii last week, and that one
is probably my favorite to play
right now.
WHAT SONG IS CURRENTLY
STUCK IN YOUR HEAD?
I have a new song called "I
Gotta Sing" that I wrote for the
Connecticut premiere of the
movie Sing! My daughter has
been singing it around the
house lately so it is either in
my head or around my head.
We did a little video of the
song ...
WE LOVE YOUR SIGNATURE
LOOK, BUT HOW MANY RED
POLOS DO YOU OWN?
I currently have 23 red polos.
On a dare, I tried to put them
all on at the same time - but I
could only get into four. I think
it's best to wear them one at
a time.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR
STEVESONGS?
I'm very excited that next
week I'll be going into the
studio with a friend of mine,
Gaby Alter. He arranged all
of the electronic sounds for
our "Recess Rocks" song a
few years ago. We'll be
collaborating to build some
new electronic soundscapes
for a handful of new songs
about robots, inertia and
Albert Einstein.
