Abstract
The aim of this paper is to describe the process of self-ignition of coal to the experts and
scientists from various disciplines who are participating in this project.
In a common sense, the phenomenon of self-ignition of coal means the onset of
exothermic chemical reactions and a subsequent temperature rise within the combustible
material, without the action of an additional ignition source.
For better comprehension of this process, origin and chemical components of the
combustion material “coal” as well as the coalification process are briefly discussed.
A review of the most important factors contributing to the oxidation and the possible
self-ignition of coal is given.
Finally, the products emitted during the oxidation, self-heating and in-situ combustion
of coal are summarised and, some prediction methods of spontaneous combustion are
mentioned.
