TROOPING THE COLOUR –
HM THE QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY PARADE
The traditional Trooping the Colour
ceremony – The Queen’s Birthday
Parade – takes place this year on
Saturday 17 June. The Colour will be
trooped by 1st Battalion Irish Guards.
This impressive display of pageantry
takes place in June each year to celebrate
the official Birthday of the Sovereign and
is carried out by Her Majesty’s personal
troops, the Household Division, on Horse
Guards Parade. Precisely as the clock
strikes eleven, the Royal Procession
arrives and The Queen takes the Royal
Salute. The parade begins with the
Inspection, as The Queen drives slowly
down the ranks of all six Guards and then
past the Household Cavalry.
After the event, the Royal Family
gathers on the balcony of Buckingham
Palace to watch an RAF flypast at 13.00,
with crowds filling The Mall. The Queen's
Birthday Parade is also broadcast live on
BBC television.
HRH Prince William of Wales,
Regimental Colonel, Irish Guards will take
the salute at The Colonel’s Review on
Saturday 10 June on Horse Guards
Parade.
THE HOUSEHOLD DIVISION BEATING RETREAT
The Household Division Beating Retreat, taking place this
year on 14 & 15 June, is a traditional musical extravaganza
which showcases the very best of British military music,
ceremonial and pageantry in the heart of London.
Set on the historic Horse Guards
Parade, against the magnificent backdrop
of St James’s Park, The Massed Bands of
The Household Division will perform a
programme of rousing military and
contemporary music, supported by The
Mounted Band of the Household Cavalry,
The Pipes and Drums of The Scots Guards,
The Drums and Pipes of the Irish Guards,
The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, The
Royal Canadian Artillery Band and The
Band of The Mercian Regiment.
Military Beating Retreat concerts have
a long tradition dating back to the
1690s. Originally the beating of the
drum was used to order troops to break
off fighting and withdraw to the safety of
camp as darkness fell, later it signalled
the closing of the camp gates at the end
of the day and called troops back to base
for the night. Beating Retreat 2017 will
be an unforgettable evening of musical
celebration, with stirring music, precision
drill, horses, cannon, lights and a
stunning fireworks finale.
