The <strong>Wind</strong>s of Power is not a programmatic work, unlike Nigel Hess’s other works for wind band. After a dark<br />
and menacing opening, a solo trumpet introduces a theme which will eventually become the centre of the<br />
piece and is soon heard tutti in a lyrical form.<br />

Originally composed in 1990, this tango is the fourth movement from Symphony No. 4 by David Matthews. The<br />
tango is the most alluring of contemporary dances, and a number of arrangements of it exist, including ones for<br />
solo piano and for various chamber ensembles. Thirty to Tango was arranged by the composer in 1999 for 30<br />
(or more) players.<br />

Vranjanka is loosely based on the traditional folksong Šano Dušo. The melody is extant in two versions, one in<br />
7/8 and one in 3/4. Hesketh chose the version in 7/8 and has extended the melodic ideas of the original with<br />
new material. The piece begins slowly and the theme is only hinted at. A faster second section follows in a set of<br />
variations on the folksong.<br />

Whirlegigg is the middle English word for a contraption that continuously spins. A simple ternary structure<br />
provides this work with opportunity for both boisterous and reflective material and gyrating accompaniment<br />
figures. The ‘machine’ almost stops near the end, but finally musters one last burst of excitement and energy to<br />
bring the work to its close.<br />
