Welcome to the June
issue of AutoTorque
This is the second edition of our new-look magazine, the
voice to the motor trade from The Parts Alliance. Since the
last issue we’ve had six lucky winners of our ‘Dream Drive’
Route 66 holiday, which will see six mechanics and their
partners jetting off to America!
Last month we had more fantastic prizes to give away, with
three mechanics winning Spitfire flights! We’ve also offered
a further 40 fabulous flying prizes – skydives, helicopter
flights, flying lessons and balloon rides, with customers who
bought from our steering and suspension range now waiting
to hear if they will be one of the lucky winners.
As we move into summer, we’re maintaining our commitment
to bringing you the best selection of quality parts, and
continuing to expand our range to give you the widest
selection of parts, right first time and on time.
An example of this is the relaunch of our superb DriveTec
range, including fluids, braking and wipers, available from
your local Parts Alliance branch. We also have our new
Powatec range of automotive chemicals, brought to you by
Bluechem, a worldwide partner of the automotive industry.
Remember, as well as this quarterly magazine, look out for
our monthly email, bringing you the latest news from the
motoring industry, technical information, features and offers.
Look out for it in your inbox soon!
We hope you have a great summer!
A
DreamDrive
COME TRUE
Lorna Marshall of G L Marshall, Huntly,
Aberdeenshire
Customer of Dingbro Elgin
Q Tell us a bit about your business …
A My husband and I opened our garage in 1990. We employ eight
members of staff, including our son who works here as a
mechanic. We pride ourselves on providing high quality work
for our loyal customer base. We offer repairs, diagnostics, air
conditioning and MOTs on all makes of cars and LCVs.
Q What was your reaction when your scratch card revealed the
Route 66 prize?
A We were away when the winning scratch card was found. When
we came back to work, we were greeted with the great news that
we’d won! We’d been scratching the cards throughout March
and April in hope but we never really expected to win the trip,
so it was a tremendous surprise.
Q What sights and places are you most looking forward to visiting?
A We’re hoping to visit as many as possible. I’m sure the Grand
Canyon will be awe-inspiring and it’s high on our list.
Q When are you going on the road trip?
A We haven’t decided yet – possibly September this year.
Q What do you think it will be like driving along the open roads
of Route 66?
A My husband Graham will be driving, so I’m keen to see the
differences between the states as we travel through them. We
can’t wait to soak up the atmosphere of America.
Q Why do you choose to fit Delphi braking?
A We’re committed to high quality, which is reflected in our choice
of braking brand. As a garage owner you want the peace of
mind that the parts you’re fitting are good quality and that
customers won’t have issues with them. We never have any
problems with Delphi.
Steve Patch of W & M Stevens,
High Wycombe, Hertfordshire
Customer of Allparts High Wycombe
Q Tell us a bit about your business …
A We’re over 60 years old and offer servicing, repairs and MOTs.
My grandmother opened the garage in the early 1950s, initially
repairing motorbikes. In the early 1970s my father and uncle
started working here, with me following in their footsteps in
1993. My dad is now 70 and he’s still involved in the day-to-day
running of the garage.
Q What was your reaction when your scratch card revealed the
Route 66 prize?
A I’m sure like all the other winners, I was shocked! We’d had a
gloomy few months as one of the brothers that started the garage
had recently passed away. Winning the road trip lifted the
morale around the family.
Q What sights and places are you most looking forward to visiting?
A I really like muscle cars, so I’m looking forward to Cadillac
Ranch. Eating authentic America steaks sounds very appealing
too. For my partner, Chicago, Lake Michigan and Las Vegas will
be highlights.
Q When are you going on the road trip?
A Late spring or early summer next year; to give us plenty of time
to plan the trip.
Q What do you think it will be like driving along the open roads
of Route 66?
A I’m looking forward to the long open roads and sheer scale of
the place. The roads in the UK are so busy, so I can’t wait to
drive for miles and miles without seeing another car.
Q Why do you choose to fit Delphi braking?
A Reliability, quality and price. We’ve been fitting Delphi for
a long time and never have any issues with them.
CHICAGO ST. LOUIS
4

In March and April The Parts Alliance and Delphi ran the
Dream Drive promotion. During the two month promotion
customers could win a multitude of prizes, including six once
in a lifetime road trips along the iconic Route 66 in America.
We caught up with the six lucky winners of the amazing road
trip, to find out more about their garages, their reaction to
winning the star prize and where they’re most looking forward
to visiting when they travel stateside.
Dave Bailey of Major Motors,
Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire
Customer of CES Stoke
Q Tell us a bit about your business …
A My father started our garage in the 1970s and I joined him a
decade later in the mid-80s. We have ten staff and although Dad
has now retired, both my wife and sister work in the office here,
so it’s very much a family business. Whilst most of our customers
are local, some travel from Manchester, Birmingham and even
London, so I guess we’re doing something right.
Q What was your reaction when your scratch card revealed the
Route 66 prize?
A Complete disbelief to be honest. You always hope you might
win, but never really think it’s going to be you.
Q What sights and places are you most looking forward to visiting?
A Since winning I’ve been watching a DVD of Billy Connelly
travelling along Route 66 to find out more about the trip.
Naturally I’m looking forward to the main attractions such as
Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Equally, driving through the
old towns and past the old railway lines will be an experience.
Q When are you going on the road trip?
A It’s our 25th wedding anniversary next May, so we’re going
then. We plan to be in Las Vegas on the day of our anniversary.
Q What do you think it will be like driving along the open roads
of Route 66?
A The stunning scenery and freedom of the open road will be
incredible. We’re going to start in Los Angeles, so I can drive the
Mustang Convertible.
Q Why do you choose to fit Delphi braking?
A It’s a really good product at the right price. We simply don’t get
any complaints from customers after fitting Delphi brakes.
Adam Rogers of A1 Motorist Centre,
Broadstairs, Kent
Customer of SC Motor Factors Thanet
Q Tell us a bit about your business …
A I opened the garage 10 years ago. There’s now 15 members of
staff here, working on all makes and models. I’ve got five repair
ramps, an MoT bay and an alignment centre. We offer
performance tuning too.
Q What was your reaction when your scratch card revealed the
Route 66 prize?
A One word - ‘gobsmacked’! To be honest I was totally taken
aback and it’s taken a little while to sink in that I’ll actually be
driving along Route 66.
Q What sights and places are you most looking forward to visiting?
A The Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater and Cadillac Ranch are
‘must do’s’. It would be rude not to stand on the corner in
Winslow, Arizona as well. It’s a line from The Eagles classic
‘Take It Easy’ and I’m sure any Eagles fan would do the same.
Q When are you going on the road trip?
A We haven’t decided yet.
Q What do you think it will be like driving along the open roads
of Route 66?
A I’m sure it’s going to be breathtaking. We’re looking forward
to seeing all the old diners and we plan to stay on the old
‘historic’ Route 66 as much as possible.
Q Why do you choose to fit Delphi braking?
A We only ever fit Delphi braking. The phrase ‘fit and forget’ really
does apply to Delphi brake pads and discs.
A DREAMDRIVE COME TRUE
Adrian Pilling of A & A Autocare,
Chorley, Lancashire Customer of BBC
Superfactors Chorley
Q Tell us a bit about your business …
A I’ve been working in the industry for 36 years, so I’ve seen a
lot of change in that time. I bought the garage two days before
Christmas in 2005. My wife and sister, (who are both called
Mandy!) and three mechanics work here. We offer Class I, II and
IV MoTs, plus servicing and repairs on all makes and models.
Q What was your reaction when your scratch card revealed the
Route 66 prize?
A I thought it was a wind-up! I phoned up the Chorley branch and
was totally amazed when they confirmed I’d genuinely won.
Route 66 was on my bucket list and whilst my mates are pleased
I’ve won, they’re a little jealous too.
Q What sights and places are you most looking forward
to visiting?
A We’ll be travelling the traditional way, starting in Chicago,
going from east to west. We’re still planning the trip but
The Grand Canyon is a must.
Q When are you going on the road trip?
A It’s our 25th wedding anniversary next year, so we’re going in
June 2018. We wanted a special holiday to celebrate and
driving along Route 66 will certainly be special. My wife is
really excited about the trip.
Q What do you think it will be like driving along the open roads
of Route 66?
A Hopefully it’ll be just like you see on TV. I’m imagining long
stretches of open road, in a convertible, with the sun
behind us.
Q Why do you choose to fit Delphi braking?
A I’ve been fitting Delphi for years, including their engine
management range and diesel components, and throughout all
that time their parts have been spot on. I want great quality at
competitive prices, which I get from Delphi.
Gordon Mitchell of Lowermill
Garage, Glasgow
Customer of Dingbro East Kilbride
Q Tell us a bit about your business …
A It’s a well-established garage that’s been trading for over
50 years. The garage was opened by friends of my parents
and then 20 years ago I became the owner. We’re your typical
garage offering servicing, MoTs, general repairs and diagnostics.
Q What was your reaction when your scratch card revealed the
Route 66 prize?
A I was totally surprised and so was the branch manager at
Dingbro. He thought I was joking with him until he received my
photo of the winning scratch card.
Q What sights and places are you most looking forward
to visiting?
A A friend of mine has done the same trip, so I’ll be taking his
advice on what to see. I’m sure the big cities of Chicago and
Los Angeles will be great places. I’ve always wanted to visit
Las Vegas, so I’m looking forward to spending a few
days there.
Q When are you going on the road trip?
A It’ll be next year, possibly in May.
Q What do you think it will be like driving along the open roads
of Route 66?
A I’ve been told that whilst the distances are long, the lack of traffic
means you cover them quite quickly. The stretches of open road
should give plenty of opportunity to marvel at the surroundings.
Q Why do you choose to fit Delphi braking?
A They’re a leading brand and nine times out of ten we fit Delphi
brakes. I know I’m getting OE quality brakes and no hassles
after fitting.
REPLACE IN PAIRS
STEERING & SUSPENSION
REPLACE IN PAIRS
ALWAYS REPLACE COIL SPRINGS IN AXLE PAIRS
Automotive suspension springs are a
central and dynamic component of a
vehicle’s suspension system, constantly
working to absorb shocks and deal with
uneven road surfaces. After many millions
of cycles, even the best made springs may
break or become tired and begin to sag,
causing the vehicle ride height to become
uneven.
When this happens, garages too often
replace just the defective spring rather than
an axle pair. Failure to replace in pairs
can have multiple negative consequences,
conceivably costing significantly more
than just the price of an extra spring.
Coil springs across an axle degrade
at around the same rate during normal
use, as they are exposed to the same
conditions, meaning that when one sags
or breaks (if both were fitted at the same
time) the other will not be far behind.
Replacing in pairs will return a vehicle
to its original ride height and comfort.
However when just one spring is replaced,
an imbalance will most likely be created
resulting in an uneven ride. This can lead
to more stress being exerted on the spring
that has not been replaced, reducing its
life expectancy.
10 CONTACT YOUR LOCAL PARTS ALLIANCE BRANCH FOR ALL OF YOUR STEERING & SUSPENSION NEEDS

REPLACE IN PAIRS
STEERING & SUSPENSION
Since coil springs are so central to the overall handling of a vehicle, the imbalance resulting
from a failure to replace in pairs can cause multiple significant safety risks. These include:
LESS RESPONSIVE STEERING
The older spring cannot effectively transfer weight
to the other springs during cornering, especially if it
has been weakened or begun to sag. This leads to
increased body roll in bends.
LESS SECURE ROAD HOLDING
During cornering, a sagging spring will experience
increased compression, but with less stored mechanical
energy available to keep the vehicle balanced and
transfer weight evenly. This will introduce a ‘lean’
during cornering which can adversely affect road
holding.
INCREASED BRAKING DISTANCE
During braking, more of the vehicle’s weight transfers
from the rear tyres to the front tyres, causing the nose to
dip forward (known as ‘dive’). Uneven balance across
the front axle can occur under braking, potentially
increasing stress on the spring that has not been
replaced. This in turn will reduce the friction on the
other tyres and increase the distance required to stop.
INCREASED TYRE WEAR
Increased pressure is exerted upon the tyre where the
spring has not been replaced, leading to faster wear
and eventually a bill for new tyres - potentially many
times the cost of a coil spring.
It is therefore important for workshops to encourage
customers to replace springs in axle pairs, just as
they would with brake pads or discs. By replacing in
pairs, the customer actually makes a cost saving, as
the labour to replace two springs during the same job
will be cheaper than the labour for replacing individual
springs twice within a short period. Not to mention the
inconvenience of repeatedly having the vehicle off the
road!
Lesjöfors produce the world’s largest range of coil
springs, featuring more than 10,000 applications
covering the majority of European and
Asian vehicles on the road today.
At the Parts Alliance we offer a
3 year warranty on all Lesjöfors
springs. Lesjöfors springs hold
the same quality as OE and can
be installed with confidence.
HELP YOUR CUSTOMERS
AVOID ‘SHOCKING’
HOLIDAY DRIVING
As your customers prepare for the holiday season, there are
a number of checks you can do to make sure their vehicles
are in safe operating condition.
As millions take to the roads for the holidays, only a fraction will remember to
perform comprehensive inspections of key vehicle systems, including brakes,
tyres, lights and shock absorbers. That’s right, shock absorbers. Many vehicle
owners are surprised to learn that the primary role of a shock absorber is to help
protect their safety through precise steering, stopping and stability characteristics
in a full range of driving situations.
“Shock absorbers are often referred to as ‘ride control’ components within
the automotive trade, because that term more clearly describes their true
function,” said Brian Sanders, business support manager UK, for Monroe shocks
manufacturer Tenneco Inc. “They help control how your vehicle reacts to the
road under all driving situations, and play vital roles in keeping you safe by
complementing the performance of your tyres, brakes and other steering and
suspension components.”
Automotive service representatives recommend that shocks be thoroughly
inspected and tested for wear at least annually and worn units replaced by at
least 80,000 kilometers. It is important to follow this replacement benchmark
because these components can lose their effectiveness in a very gradual and
almost imperceptible manner.
“
Think of how our
eyesight changes
throughout our lives
– we might not notice
the change from day
UNDERSTANDING THE
‘SAFETY TRIANGLE’
One way to understand the importance of properly
functioning shock absorbers is through a vehicle
system known as the ‘Safety Triangle’. This system of
interconnected undercar components – including tyres,
brakes, shocks and other steering and suspension parts
– is the primary contributor to safe steering, stopping
and stability.
One worn part in this system can compromise the
effectiveness of the others, as seen in the following
influences of worn shocks:
• Worn ride control components can affect steering
by reducing tyre grip and permitting increased
body sway;
• They can affect stopping by allowing severe
spring oscillation and permitting excessive weight
transfer to the front wheels;
• And they can affect stability by permitting excessive
side-to-side weight transfer around curves.
Replacing worn shocks can also help protect other
expensive vehicle components from premature wear. For
example, worn shocks can accelerate brake-pad wear by
permitting excessive back-to-front weight transfer during
stops. They also can lead to abnormal wear of tyres and
suspension components such as tie rods, ball joints and
control arms.
However, make no mistake, the number one reason to
replace worn shocks is to protect the safety of drivers
people take to the roads for the holiday season.
“As millions of consumers plan their upcoming holiday
inspection to their preparations,” Sanders said. “This one
added step can help keep them safer on the road and
ensure that their holidays are as enjoyable and relaxing as
Automotive Battery Operating States, Lifespan &
STATE OF
CHARGE (SOC)
STATE OF
HEALTH (SOH)
The State of Charge of an automotive battery is expressed
as Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) and is the force used to push
the starting current known as Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)
through the starter circuit to the starter motor.
Assuming a battery is fully charged with a high OCV and has
a good State of Health (SOH), the high OCV will enable the
battery to repeatedly supply sufficient CCA to start the engine
and achieve approximately 100% of its starting capacity.
If a battery has a low OCV its ability to force CCA through
the starter circuit is reduced resulting in a possible non-start
even though the battery has a good SOH.
The SOH of an automotive battery is expressed as Cold
Cranking Amps (CCA) and is the starting capacity the OCV
is capable of forcing to the starter motor via the starter circuit.
Each time a battery is discharged and recharged (cycled) a
small amount of the plate material that chemically reacts with
the sulphuric acid in electrolyte solution to produce electricity
is permanently lost.
Over time and dependent on factors such as operating
temperature, operating state of charge and duty cycle this
natural usage of the plate material will eventually result in a
slow but steady reduction in the SOH of the battery and its
ability to produce the CCA required by the starter motor.
While it is impossible to stipulate a maximum or minimum
battery life expectancy due to the possible variations in
the operating conditions of the battery this ageing and
deterioration will eventually result in the failure of the battery
to start the engine.
AHEAD
Replacement Conditions By Ian Newham, Training Manager at GS Yuasa Battery Sales UK Ltd
BATTERY FAILURE &
DIAGNOSTICS
DRIVETEC
BATTERIES
Taking these two operating states of an automotive battery into
consideration it is easy to confuse SOC with SOH and make
incorrect diagnostic assumptions when battery failure occurs.
If the battery SOC is low but it has a good SOH engine starting
capability can be recovered by recharging the battery and
restoring its ability to push the available CCA through the starter
circuit.
However, if the SOC is high but the SOH is low as the battery
plate material has deteriorated over time to a level that cannot
support the demands placed on it by the starter motor, a nonstart
situation is likely to occur even though the battery is fully
charged.
The SOH of a battery and its ability to supply high levels of CCA
becomes even more important during the cold winter months.
This is because the ability of a battery to supply the maximum
available CCA is reduced by approximately 30% at 0°C.
However the CCA requirements of the starter circuit increase
in order to overcome conditions such as increased engine oil
viscosity and reduced engine component tolerances.
It is therefore possible to have a battery that is fully charged with
a good OCV that will still not be able to start the engine as the
SOH and its ability to deliver high levels of CCA has reached
a level that is unable to support the requirements of the starter
circuit.
Not only do we stock a huge range of Yuasa batteries, we
also have our own DriveTec range.
The DriveTec range is built to a high specification to cope
with today’s automotive electrical demands. It’s aimed
MANN-FILTER FUEL FILTERS
PU 9005 Z - THE ULTIMATE IN
DIESEL/WATER SEPARATION
FOR THE SUPER POPULAR VAUXHALL ASTRA
THE PROBLEM
Even high-quality diesel fuel may contain traces of water originating either from moist air
entering the fuel tank filler neck or breather, or from condensation from filling station bulk
tanks. Therefore, advanced common rail diesel injection systems with pressures of up to
2,500 bar have extremely high requirements in terms of fuel purity.
THE SOLUTION
The innovative three-stage MANN-FILTER PU 9005 z fuel filter achieves consistently
high water separation efficiency of over 90 percent.
HOW
The filter media reliably
removes solid dirt
particles from the diesel
fuel.
A coalescer fleece retains
even the finest water
droplets from the fuel/
water emulsion creating
much larger drops.
A hydrophobic sieve
ensures that the enlarged
drops do not enter the
injection system.
Gravity causes the separated water to collect in a water collection chamber in the
filter module. A sensor signals as soon as the water needs to be manually drained
or siphoned.
MANN FILTER
FILTER SYSTEMS
EFFECTIVE FILTRATION OF
EVEN TINY WATER DROPLETS
Even high-quality
diesel may contain
traces of water,
whether from moist air
entering through the
tank opening or from
condensation in the
large tanks used to
store the diesel in gas
stations.
However, advanced
common rail diesel
injection systems with
pressures of up to
2,500 bar have higher
requirements than simple mechanical systems in terms of the
purity of the fuel. Tiny dirt particles as well as water drops can
damage the components of the fuel circuit, which in the worst
case can result in system failure.
Another challenge is the composition of modern diesel fuels,
which have changed greatly in recent years: they contain
very little sulphur and have higher proportions of biofuel
and additives. This results in the formation of very small and
stable water drops in the diesel fuel and requires a new water
separation technology.
EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE
ACROSS THE ENTIRE SERVICE
INTERVAL
With the three-stage water separators, car
workshops and wholesalers are offering
their customers a new filter element which
achieves extremely high efficiency over its
entire service life. It separates more than
93% of the water in fuel when new, and its
separation efficiency is still over 90% at the
end of the service interval.
The benefit for the vehicle owner is therefore
clear: “Whether corrosion or cavitation
effects in injectors, valves, or the electric
injection pump, this innovative separation
technology from MANN-FILTER greatly
reduces damage that can result in system
failure,” says Lena Ketschau, Product
Manager Fuel Filters in MANN+HUMMEL’s
Automotive Aftermarket business unit.
Reliable performance is even more important
if the vehicle is used in countries where the
fuel has high water content.
DROPLETS JOIN TOGETHER INTO DROPS IN THE COALESCER FLEECE
If water enters the fuel circuit, it is reduced to small drops in the low-pressure fuel pump. After several fuel cycles,
drop sizes smaller than 1/10th the diameter of a human hair are possible.
The innovative PU 9005 z and PU 10 011 z diesel fuel filters from MANN-FILTER are designed for the challenging
job of removing these very small and finely distributed water droplets from the diesel fuel. Fuel flows from the
outside to the inside of the three-stage filter element (pressure-side filter operation).
In the first
stage, the
filter medium
reliably
removes
solid dirt
particles
from the
diesel fuel.
The second
filter stage
uses a
coalescer
fleece. It
retains
even the
finest water
droplets from the fuel/water
emulsion and combines them to
form much larger drops.
In the third stage, a hydrophobic sieve
ensures that the enlarged drops do
not enter the injection system. Gravity
causes the separated water to collect in
a water collection chamber in the filter
module. A sensor signals as soon as the
water needs to be manually drained
or siphoned. Metal-free elements
mean that both filters are completely
incinerable and therefore can be
recycled to protect the environment.
in Fiat Ducato
ambulances for
West Midlands
Ambulance
Service
West Midlands Ambulance Service was finding that the
suspension bushes in its fleet of Fiat Ducato ambulances
were suffering from premature wear. Given the
importance of these vehicles being available and on
the road, it was vital that repairs did not incur too much
workshop time.
As the suspension bushes were not available separately,
WMAS was suffering from lower vehicle capacity and
downtime. Because the original fix involved replacing
the full anti-roll bar and spring on a regular basis, the
issue was also incurring high costs.
By designing specific bushes for the vehicles’ leaf
springs and anti-roll bars, Polybush provided a costeffective
solution that kept these emergency vehicles on
the road, and reduced repair costs by over £700 per
vehicle on parts alone.
As a result of this successful fix, WMAS is now
commissioning Polybush to provide new bushes
for its fleet.
Delphi does not recommend
the use of Copper Grease
There’s a widespread view that copper grease, otherwise
known as copper slip, should be applied to the back of
brake pads to help lubrication and noise prevention. Not
so. The need for copper grease has diminished in recent
years in line with advances in shim technology.
In fact, its use could have the opposite effect, preventing the
shim, the basis of quiet braking, from doing its job. The result is
increased noise and judder, as well as possible interference with
the electrical systems such as the ABS, ESP wear sensors, etc.
So Why Take the Risk?
Copper Grease is mineral based and may damage any rubber component that it comes
into contact with such as rubber boots, gaiters, seals and O rings, etc.
Copper Grease is an excellent conductor of heat and when used on the backside of a
brake pad can significantly increase heat transfer.
Copper Grease has poor lubricating properties. It is in fact an anti-seize compound.
Never use Copper Grease on the back side of a brake disc mounting face as this can
increase the Disc run out lead to DTV (Disc Thickness Variation) causing brake judder.
A good quality non-mineral grease should be used on moving parts only and never
applied to the back face of a Brake Pad or mounting face of a Brake Disc.
Most modern brake pads are supplied with noise fix shims and do not require the use
of Copper Grease, which could be detrimental to their performance.
BRAKING
DELPHI BRAKE GREASE
Why choose Delphi brake grease?
Formulated from a non-mineral oil based solution, Delphi’s
high performance brake grease (SSB1000) replaces the need for
traditional copper-based variants, whilst also reducing noise and
preventing squealing.
Free of copper and acids, avoiding the risk of corrosion.
Non-conductive eliminating interference with electrical components.
High pressure stability helping to ensure longer-term lubricating properties.
Compatible with all metals and most rubber materials for universal application.
Resistant to high temperatures and water for increased protection.
Long-lasting protection against corrosion, with no visible residue or staining.
Supplied in a handy 100ml tube with applicator for easy application (SSB1000).
Use Like This...
For a professional brake
installation, Delphi brake
grease should be applied
sparingly to the metalto-metal
contact points
between the brake pad and
caliper only. But remember,
never coat the pad’s friction
material or the surface of
the disc, and always keep
clear of all rubber parts.
THE KEY TO
SUCCESS…
A COMPLETE
DIAGNOSTICS
SOLUTION
Today’s vehicles can have up to 50 computers embedded
within, all communicating through tens of millions of
lines of computer code to manage interconnected
systems including brakes, engine, navigation, lighting,
ventilation, entertainment… the list is endless.
The key to servicing these technologies is being able to
make a timely, informed and accurate diagnosis. To do
this, garages will need access to the right diagnostic
tools and technical information.
Having the right diagnostic tool is vital. With Delphi’s
DS diagnostic tools technicians are able to perform
basic to in-depth diagnostics for all makes and models.
Available as a stand-alone VCI or pre-configured tablet,
the feature-packed solution allows technicians to read
and erase fault codes, code ECUs, reset service lights
and activate or adjust components.
Integrated into its DS software, Delphi’s Vehicle Technical
Information combines essential maintenance and repair
data with detailed technical drawings, manuals and
procedures. Together with the DS, this will enable
technicians to save time and money by reducing nonbillable
hours and improving workshop efficiency.
Recent emissions legislation has presented garages
with a further opportunity. This legislation requires
manufacturers to allow the independent garage access
to vehicle repair and maintenance information from their
website via a common J2534 ‘Pass-Thru’ device. Using
Delphi’s DS-FLASH. Pass-Thru package, garages will
TSG Motors has built a strong reputation, providing a wide range of vehicle repairs
members, the garage caters for a wide range of vehicles.
Tony Shoard, owner of TSG Motors started his career as
a vehicle technician and worked at a dealership before
making the break and going it alone as an independent.
His family business has since expanded with success
and is now split across two sites: a Servicesure branded
fast fit centre, next door to the original TSG mechanical
workshop.
“
We’ve been a
”
Tony Shoard, garage owner
Intrigued to find out more about the unique setup, we
asked Tony what had prompted him to run part of his
business under a separate brand.
“We were originally running from just one workshop,
but we found that we were missing out on the amount of
work Servicesure could actually bring to us.”
“We worked out that we could run a business on the
amount of work that we turned away, so we decided
The branded Servicesure Autocentre, located next door
It caters to the needs of the modern motorist, a consumer
trend that Tony had initially been turning away.
Tony puts part of TSG’s success down to the relationship
he has with his local factor, Allparts Automotive, a
founder member of The Parts Alliance.

He told us that Allparts supports his marketing strategy
with seasonal offers.
“It sounds a bit corny but we ‘spring into summer and
fall into winter’, the Servicesure brand allows us to be
more flexible with this.”
“But you can’t just put the sign up and expect it to work.
“You have to believe in it, you have to get behind the
brand and promote it everywhere you can.”
With the newly opened Servicesure workshop
successfully attracting fast fit custom, the motor engineer’s
workshop deals with the more complicated jobs.
Hybrid vehicles, for example, is an area that’s becoming
increasingly lucrative for TSG.
Tony had trained for this specialism just as the technology
was starting to be seen as a viable alternative to the
conventional petrol or diesel engine and has since sent
more of his staff on the appropriate courses.
It’s training that appears to have paid off.
He said that more and more hybrid owners are
specifically seeking out his garage for the specialist
knowledge.
WHAT IS SERVICESURE?
“We are quite well versed on them now and we find that
one hybrid person will talk to another so word of mouth
works well for us.”
While marketed completely separately, the two sides
of the business are well adjusted and come together
to cater for the needs of motorists in Slough and the
surrounding area.
“We’ve been members of other networks before but we
were pushing for a set up that would allow us to say
‘The answer is yes, what’s the question”.
“It’s an opportunity to be part of a larger chain and it’s
given us a lot of weight.”
“
We’re a small independent
but Servicesure has allowed
us to be part of something
bigger, something that’s
growing all the time
as more and more
quality members join.
”
Established by The Parts Alliance in
2004, members of the Servicesure
Autocentre network must comply
with a ‘consumer service charter’,
which demands high quality and
professionalism.
In return, independents benefit from
a national warranty programme,
a courtesy car scheme, marketing,
waste management and insurance
offers, among other things.
There are currently over 420
independents listed as a Servicesure
Autocentre.
SNAKEBITE: DARTS CHAMPION PETER WRIGHT
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
ON THE OCHE WITH
PETER
‘SNAKEBITE’
WRIGHT
In March this year, Servicesure took its first
steps into professional sport sponsorship, with
current world number three darts player Peter
Wright. Here we catch up with Peter in an
exclusive interview with the new Servicesure
Autocentres ambassador.
Q You’ve had a great start to 2017. What has been the
secret and what are your hopes for the rest of the year?
A It has been a good start to 2017 and it’s fantastic that it’s
coincided with me starting to work alongside Servicesure.
At the time of this interview, I’ve won seven tournaments
so far this year, including my first TV title in the UK
Open, and I’m at finals night in the Premier League. I
think a lot of it is down to confidence and hard work. I
put the hours in on the practice board and I believe that,
on my day, I’m capable of beating anyone. It won’t
always happen but you have to have the belief and
I’ve got that.
As for the rest of the year, I just want to keep playing
well and winning titles. Obviously the television events
are the ones we all love to win but winning on the Pro
Tour or the European Tour is also a fantastic feeling.
Q How proud are you to be sponsored by Servicesure?
A I’m extremely proud. I visited the head office in Solihull
at the end of March for an official launch which was
a great afternoon. It was a good, fun environment and
it felt like a fantastic place to work.
I know that there are an increasing number of garages
signing up to the Servicesure programme and it’s well
over 400 now around the UK.
Servicesure is on the march and I’d like to think I
am in the darts world too. Hopefully we can rise to
the top together and this can be a long and successful
partnership for all parties. I’m certainly proud to have
the logo on my shirt at all the big tournaments during
the rest of this year.
Q You are commonly known around the darts circuit as
Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright. Where did the nickname
come from?
A This is a nice easy one. I just like snakes as pets! The
name was mentioned to me a good few years back
and it has just stuck. The darts fans seem to like it and
I’m happy with it so it’s all good.

Q When did you first realise you were good at darts?
A I first started throwing darts when I was 10 and it’s just
gone on from there. To be honest though, I don’t think
I am that good yet! I know what I’m capable of and I
still feel there is a lot more to come.
Q When you first started out, did you ever hustle
in a pub?
A I did hustle in a pub in London when I was 16 and the
reaction wasn’t good. I learned my lesson that day so I
haven’t done it since!
Q How do you prepare for a big match?
A It’s quite a long process because I have to get my
practice in but also I have to have my hair done. It can
take up to four hours but my wife Jo does that and she
is absolutely brilliant and a great support.
Q Who is your toughest opponent in darts?
A That’s a difficult one because there are so many good
players. I would have to say that Simon Whitlock is
one of the toughest players to beat. He is a great but he
has also got that Aussie grit which means he never
knows when he is beaten.
Q If you weren’t one of the best professional darters in
the world, what would be your occupation?
A A tyre fitter.
Q Given you are backed by Servicesure, what would
be your dream car?
A Lamborghini.
Q And finally, what advice would you give aspiring young
darts players looking to be successful in the sport?
A Be dedicated and believe in yourself. There are so many
quality darts players out there now that hard work is the
only way you are going to make it to, and stay at, the
top. Put the hours in on the practice board and the
rewards will come.

LIQUIDASSETS
Many consumers and vehicle owners are becoming detached
from vehicle maintenance. How can we help them, while
maximising your service revenues?
THE FACTS
• 46% of consumers “haven’t
got a clue what goes on”
when their car is serviced
• 85% of consumers trust the
workshop to select parts of
the right quality
Some of the fluids that can be checked (usually quite easily!) that
will help to maintain both the safe operation of the vehicle and its
mechanical integrity.
DIFFERENTIAL OILS
SCREENWASH & DE-ICER
POWER STEERING FLUID
GEARBOX OIL
ENGINE OIL
COOLANT
BRAKE FLUID
Highlighting genuine maintenance tasks that need to
be undertaken can be of real benefit to you and the
consumer. It is generally accepted that poor maintenance
is the no.1 cause of engine failure and in fact many
motorists have a relatively low level of awareness when it
comes to maintaining their vehicles properly so they rely
heavily on the advice and quality of service provided by
their expert workshop of choice.
When it comes to engine oil related
problems, not using the right oil,
exceeding service intervals and
running the vehicle low on oil are the
main causes of problems. Hence, all
vehicles that come into a workshop
should have their engine oil grade,
level and service interval checked.
The same maintenance principles
described above also apply to
antifreeze & coolant.
If the wrong oil or coolant grade is
being used or the service interval
has been exceeded, the safest thing
ENGINE OIL & COOLANT
to do might be a complete flush and
refill with the right product. This will
help removing harmful contaminants
before the fluid change and will
also inhibit the build-up of harmful
deposits in the future. To flush the
engine oil system use Flush Out or
Petrol & Diesel Engine Flush. To flush
the cooling system
we recommend
a mixture of
deionised water
mixed with 15% of
the correct coolant.
If the oil or coolant level is low, an
immediate top-up is required. Also
it’s worth advising your customers
that it’s safer to keep a top up pack
in the boot and be prepared for an
emergency top up, rather than wait
for the warning light to come on.
Why not offer your
customers a 1 litre
top up pack as an
added value service
item and extra
revenue stream for
yourself?
HAD FAULTY BRAKE FLUID!
BRAKE FLUID
You cannot tell the quality of brake fluid simply by
looking at it. The best way of determining whether
brake fluid is faulty or not is to use a brake fluid tester.
There are a number of different types but by far the
most reliable are testers that measure the actual boiling
point of the fluid.
In a recent study of approximately 750 vehicles,
around 33% were measured at below 180°C, which
is the minimum recommended boiling point. The risks
associated with driving a vehicle with faulty brake fluid
are self-evident and compelling. It’s simply not enough
to change brake fluid at the same time as faulty discs
or pads.
750 VEHICLES
TESTED
Like engine oil or coolant, the right brake fluid must
be used, should be changed at the manufacturers’
recommended intervals and at any time in between if it
is found to be faulty with a brake fluid tester.
So why not offer a brake fluid boiling point test to your
customers?
SCREENWASH
Visibility is vital for the safety of all
motorists all year round. Our range of
screenwash offers the best option for
cleaning performance. It is formulated
to effectively remove insect smear, salt
and traffic film all year round. Plus,
it does not damage wiper blades or
rubber seals and is compatible with
modern polycarbonate and Plexiglas
lights.
Are you checking your customers’
vehicles’ screenwash levels and
offering them a top up pack?
GEARBOX / DIFFERENTIAL / POWER STEERING
These components are also reliant on having the correct fluid at the right amount to ensure the efficient operation
of the vehicle. Ensuring these fluids are kept topped up and changed when required will help to maintain the
vehicle at its best. Although these items may not be considered as routine services items, some components may
have an extended service interval or may need topping up after a repair.

TITLEOSRAM
OE BULBS
Making sure your customers are happy after a visit to your workshop
or garage is an essential part of your business. By offering an excellent
service and using top quality OE parts, you will help guarantee they’ll
return or recommend you to other potential customers.
Many bulb replacements have become quite technical and the customer is
more likely than ever to rely on you to fit the bulb for them. Bulb fitting and
replacement is often a complex job and it makes sense to use a quality OE
product when replacing bulbs in a vehicle, especially for applications that
require considerable labour time.
Recent information released by the DVLA shows
that ‘lighting and signaling’ is still the top reason for
vehicles in the class 3 and class 4 vehicle category to
fail their MoT.
Fitting OE quality bulbs can greatly reduce failures and retesting costs.
They last longer and the beam pattern in the halogen bulbs is perfectly
aligned thanks to precision manufacturing, meaning less headlamp
adjustment required on MoT tests.
For garages and workshops there is a large profit potential by offering
genuine OE quality bulbs. You can increase this if you also offer customers
the opportunity to upgrade their bulbs to one of the many upgrade bulbs
available offering increased or alternative lighting performance.
As well as a longer service life,
Osram OE bulbs offer a high quality
performance during their lifetime with
perfect geometry to maximize light
output. There are many reasons why
lower cost aftermarket bulbs do not
last as long as their OE counterparts:
• Poor gas filling and sealing of
the bulb can lead to a
‘blackening’ effect on the glass.
• Use of cheaper materials
such as the filament or electrical
contacts can lead to early failures.
• Some amber bulb types have
been coated in lacquer which
can peel off or fade giving an
incorrect light output.
Osram bulbs will not do this.
Like for like OE replacement bulbs are a good starting point but there are
many road legal, ECE approved, MoT compliant upgrade alternatives
within the Osram range. For example, a customer may not know that
improved performance or whiter light is available for their vehicle simply
by changing the bulbs.
Schaeffler leads the way in
‘Mobility for tomorrow’.
Schaeffler’s stand at Automechanika
showed why the global technology giant
is very much at the sharp end of modern
vehicle system design and engineering.
Schaeffler is one of the world’s leading
automotive component suppliers - designing,
manufacturing and delivering high-tech precision
parts and systems to virtually every vehicle
manufacturer on the planet. However, Schaeffler
is not just a ‘supplier’, but a pro-active technical
partner working closely with engine and vehicle
designers to produce innovative systems for the
engine, drive train and chassis. Basically, our
engineers are developing advanced solutions
today to power the vehicles of tomorrow -
whether they be petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric
Our philosophy in the UK is to educate and
inform professional mechanics about these
components and systems before they hit the
roads - so that the aftermarket is ready and
prepared to repair vehicles equipped with new
technology instead of being stumped when they
arrive at the workshop.
Hybrids are very much
the green power unit of
choice for many vehicle
manufacturers, and
Schaeffler is once again
involved at the heart of
the hybrid with its efficient
48V hybridization system.
48V Hybrid Module
“This ‘entry-level’
hybridization offers the essential advantages
of a conventional hybrid vehicle while
simultaneously providing an economically
attractive, low-cost option that can reduce CO2
emissions by up to 15%...” says Schaeffler’s
Prof. Peter Gutzmer.
Schaeffler’s Bio-Hybrid Concept - an electric bike crossed with a usable, viable and much cooler Sinclair C5 (remember them!)
A range of other functions can be integrated into
a 48V system, such as mechanical tensioners
for starter generators and electromechanical
adjusters steering, roll stabilisation, suspension,
hybrid modules, axle drive solutions, torque
vectoring units and even clutch (the system
even includes a dual mass flywheel!).
Another innovation is the
E-Wheel, which integrates
an electric motor, power
electronics and a control
unit directly into the wheel
hub, providing significant
installation space saving
E-Wheel Hub motor
compared to conventional
drive concepts and functional possibilities such
as 180º steering to make parallel parking much
more literal!
products and any future developments by
