It is highly soluble in water and decomposes to oxygen and sodium chloride (NaCl) at high temperature. Sodium chlorate has also been used as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of sodium perchlorate and potassium chlorate. Some other uses of sodium chlorate include leather tanning, manufacture of explosives, fireworks and dyes, and the production of oxygen rescue apparatus. According to a new report by Expert Market Research, the global sodium chlorate market reached a volume of 3.8 Million Tons in 2016 and is further expected to reach 4.7 Million Tons by 2022. The market of sodium chlorate is mainly driven by the demand for paper pulp bleaching. The implementation of ECF (Environmental Chlorine Free) production process in the paper and pulp industry by governments across the world has resulted in a reduction in the usage of chlorine in the bleaching process. Sodium chlorate releases chlorine dioxide which is considered to be a substitute of chlorine gas as an oxidising agent which does not possess any carcinogenic effects, and has high bleaching and disinfection performance. As a result, the ECF policy is expected to boost the global demand for sodium chlorate in the coming years.
