Key Learning Points • Prolonged exposure to trauma triggers physiological changes in the brain • Circuits are disrupted, causing changes in the hippocampus, the brain’s memory and emotional sector • This can cause the brain shrinkage, problems with memory, learning and behaviour • A child does not learn to regulate emotions when living in a state of constant stress are associated with greater risk of chronic disease and mental health problems in adulthood Facilitor Notes • This slide shows very clearly the difference between two sizes brain and the differences in the surface and internal structure. • Show the group the slide and then get them to discuss what they see the difference between the two brains. • The core points are visible size the gap at the lower part of the small brain which is where the cerebellum is very small and how the surface of the brain has gaps and therefore how difficult it will be for a child to process learning. • The core idea of this slide is to visually show the children who have experienced stress/trauma how will impact on the overall development of the architectural makeup of the brain. • The usual response from group members is what a shock of seeing this slide, and to think about the relevance of the learning that a child will normally age 3 would be experiencing and what the longterm impact may be what they are learning with the primary schools with this missing information. 4
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Functional magnetic resonance imaging or functional MRI is a functional neuroimaging procedure using MRI technology that measures brain activity by detecting changes associated with blood flow. This technique relies on the fact that cerebral blood flow and neuronal activation are coupled. When an area of the brain is in use, blood flow to that region also increases. This now gives us the ability to visually see the brain in action and show us why some children will struggle in education and in life. This images show us the part of the brain that have not developed due to impact of trauma and neglect and that the presentation of behaviour that might be seen within the classroom setting, we may be able to develop a better understanding of some the difficulties that children present and have to manage living with, we can really that behaviour is a form of language.
