Q&A: SARAH-JANE PERRY No.7 and British No. 2 Sarah-Jane Perry talks with International Squash Q&AWorld Magazine. SARAH-JANEPERRY Earliest sporting memory: Going to mini tennis lessons with my brother when I was about 4 years old and junior squash lessons from around 5. The first live sport I remember going to see was a Liverpool football match and my first professional squash experience was the British Squash Players Association (BSPA) finals in 2002. Sports watched: I love watching tennis, hockey and football but I will watch almost any sport. Sports played: I enjoy playing tennis and hockey but used to throw discus and shot at national junior level and play rounders also. Why a life in sport? When I finished university I got a graduate job in technology implementation but decided to play squash full time instead; a decision I have yet to regret for a second! There is nothing quite like playing the sport you love as your job. Toughest part of your sporting life: I am not naturally an organised person so keeping on top of all the admin involved in travel and training etc. can be a struggle. Sleeping can also be difficult when changing time zones as well. Most memorable sporting moment: Winning the British National title in 2015...or maybe handing my brother a bagel (11-0) in a game of racketball recently! Worst sporting moment: Finding out I had two stress fractures in my back; the fear of the unknown in terms or severity, length of recovery period and likelihood of recurrence. Sporting heroes: Serena Williams. She has been at the forefront of women’s tennis for such a long time, always rising above criticism and using tennis as her voice. She’s a continual inspirational on and off the court, particularly in empowering women about body image and body shaming. Favourite venue and why: It felt particularly special playing in front of the Pyramids of Giza, thinking how much history lay so close by and the lengths that were gone to build such amazing ancient wonders. Sporting event you would pay the most to see: I would pay a lot to have been at the champions league final in 2005 when Liverpool completed a heroic comeback after trailing 3-0 at half time. And to miss: Any motorsport Question asked most often by the public: Why isn’t squash in the Olympics? And the answer: It’s not in the Olympics and no one in the sport is quite sure why.... but we have a great sport that is forever growing and improving. Greatest change you would like to see in the running of your sport: Keep pushing the prize money up and growing all levels of the PSA World Tour so that more players can make a living. How well is your sport covered in the media? Media coverage is improving but it would be great to see more coverage in mainstream media channel. There are so many truly amazing athletes on the PSA World Tour that deserve more recognition. Sporting motto: “Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records” (William A. Ward) Who would you most like to invite to dinner and why? JK Rowling because not only did she create the legendary world of Harry Potter, her story is full of inspiration and overcoming adversities.
