First steps to Nursery... article by Julia Whelan As much as it's exciting watching your grandchild take their first steps in to nursery, it can feel like a daunting step for everyone involved in the decision making about which Nursery they will attend . Here are some tips to help support your family/ grandchild in finding the right nursery and ensuring a happy and positive start for everyone. Get prepared - Nursery spaces get snapped up, start researching and looking around early. Some of the most popular nurseries will get booked up as much as a year in advance. You can find a list of local nurseries and childcare providers on the East Sussex Community Information Service - www.escis.org.uk. Chat to other parents and grandparents about their experiences and opinions. Protocol and procedures - All nurseries are registered and inspected. Looking at a nursery's Ofsted rating is a good starting point – Ofsted What’ , s your next adventure? The report will cover fundamentally important factors such as safety, nursery environment and child development. You can also ask a Nursery about their policies and procedures. First impressions – Taking a tour of a nursery is often the best way to get a good picture of the setting and how they are run. Most nurseries are happy to show you around, giving you an excellent opportunity to get a feel for the atmosphere, staff and facilities. Most importantly you will see the children busy and at play. Take note of what activities and resources are on offer and the amount of outdoor space available. Watch how staff interact with children and talk to other parents/grandparents, if you have an opportunity. Ask about the structure of the day and importantly snacks and meals. Don't be afraid to take a pre-compiled list of questions and take notes. Practicalities - Check opening times and sessions offered. It is useful to know how flexible the nursery can be around these times and if they have spaces available now, and in the future, if extra sessions are needed. Costs will vary in settings, some charge by the hour, day or week. Make sure to also check for hidden costs – nappies, food etc. Childcare can be expensive, but there is help available. Some 2 year olds, and all 3- 4 year olds will be eligible for up to 15 hours a week free childcare. More information about funding can be found on the East Sussex County Council website.
