Teachers in those days were often mothers who took in
neighborhood children.
Credit for our modern version of the school system
usually goes to Horace Mann. When he became Secretary
of Education in Massachusetts in 1837. He set forth his
vision for a system of professional teachers who would
teach students an organized curriculum of basic content.
Today’s school system no longer teaches morality,
character or ethics and the differences between right and
wrong have been politically ostracized. The pressure for
standardization have pushed these principles out of the
classroom, yet 19 states still allow discipline in schools
though these methods are rarely used.
Schools no longer teach religion, patriotism or even civics,
the theoretical, political and practical aspects of
citizenship that guided our founding fathers to form a
more perfect union.
Recent budget cuts in school systems around the country
are eliminating art and music classes, including many
athletic programs and even recess for kids in grade school.
The widely unpopular Common Core system that has
been implemented in recent years has teachers struggling
with student’s grades are falling.
