the 9th edition of our program. We 

hope that you will enjoy your time in 

Giessen! 

Since it was initiated in 2009, the 

U.S.-German Summer School in 

International and Comparative Law has 

earned a global reputation for excellence. 

Our courses, all of them taught in 

English, are designed to challenge and 

inspire you in the highly popular fields 

of international and comparative law. 

The course combines an academic 

program with a wide range of cultural 

and social activities. Two overnight field 

trips to Hamburg and Berlin will show 

you the beautiful places Germany has 

to offer. 

The schedule leaves free time for you to 

explore Germany and other European 

countries. Located in the heart of 

Europe, Giessen is the perfect starting 

point for short trips to Paris, London or 

Prague. You are encouraged to explore 

Europe on your own during our free 

weekend. 

Above all, we encourage you to have a 

good time in Giessen and to make

hotel room. Smoking is strictly prohibited 

in all hotel rooms, as well. Smoking

of the German law and the hotel will

All courses will take place at the Law 

Campus - new building. It only takes 

you a few minutes to get there by bus. 

Please take bus no. 5 (direction 

„Bahnhof“) in front of your hotel and get 

off at „Behördenzentrum“. Cross the 

street to find yourself at the station 

„Berliner Platz“ for bus no. 2 (direction 

„Eichendorfring“) and get off at „Lutherberg“. 

There you’ll see the campus.

Your accommodation is located just 2.4 

km/ 1.5 miles from the law campus. 

Walking distance is about 25 minutes.

At any time you can order a taxi or mini 

car. Please note that the standard taxi

you back between 5 and 7 EUR per

INTERNATIONAL 

ECONOMIC LAW & 

BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS 

International economic law is a rapidly 

developing area of international law 

concerned principally with international 

trade, investment, finance and banking. 

The course provides a theoretical and 

practical understanding of the regulatory 

framework of the international trade 

system and is as well addressing a 

range of other legal issues arising from 

different kinds of international business 

transactions. 

The course begins with providing a 

general understanding of international 

trade law and the international legal 

system, allowing you to place international 

economic relations in context. You 

will explore questions of governance 

through studies of the World Trade 

Organization and examine the mechanics 

of more specific systems such as 

international trade law, international 

investment, international commercial 

arbitration, international intellectual 

property law and international corporate 

governance.

BUSINESS ETHICS AND 

HUMAN RIGHTS LAW 

The course will explore the links 

between business and human rights, 

including questions regarding state 

obligations and the extent to which 

business entities such as multinational 

corporations have human rights 

responsibilities. It considers developments 

on the international and 

domestic level to promote accountability 

and to ensure compliance with 

emerging standards. We will discuss 

several areas that pose particularly 

difficult human rights challenges for 

companies (extractive industries, 

supply chain labor standards, operating 

in conflict areas), examining key issues 

and exploring how companies, civil 

society organizations, governments 

and other stakeholders have sought to 

address these.

COMPARATIVE LAW 

This course introduces students to 

various interesting questions in comparative 

constitutional law on the basis of 

selected constitutional instruments 

from different jurisdictions. Firstly, we 

will enter into a discussion of structural 

issues, including comparative approaches 

to the separation of powers and 

judicial review. Secondly, we will 

analyze different approaches to 

federalism, among others addressing a 

comparison of competitive and 

cooperative models respectively. 

Thirdly, we will explore the question of 

constitutional change, focusing on how 

constitutions are amended and how 

new constitutions are written. Finally, 

we will address comparative approaches 

to individual rights, including the 

question of positive rights.

CYBER LAW 

This course will focus on the regulation 

of media and communication technology 

(and the Internet in particular) in a 

world of increasingly porous borders. 

The class will focus on the transnational 

aspects of the problems raised by 

communication technology, but will 

also include some discussion of 

national regulatory schemes (primarily 

Europe and North America) in a comparative 

perspective. The first part of the 

course will address the broad issue of 

regulating a global communications 

network. 

For example, how do governments 

regulate a network that transcends 

borders? Can the Internet be regulated 

at all? How does the Internet change, if 

at all, the way in which government 

operates? 

Does it change the way we think about 

our international regime? The second 

part of the course will cover a series of 

important topics addressing information 

flows in cyberspace (for example, 

freedom of speech, privacy, copyright 

and trademark).

special laptop bags are no exception). Do rent 

a see- through basket at the library. This is to 

make sure that nobody is stealing the books.

LIEBIG MUSEUM 

The Museum is located in the historic 

laboratory complex used by Justus von 

Liebig for his research while working at 

Giessen University. The professor of 

chemistry and founder of experimental 

scientific research brought mankind 

several inventions, familiar not only 

from chemistry classes at school (the 

‘Liebig condenser’, for example). They 

include baking powder, baby food, 

mineral fertilizers, and meat extract,

The botanical garden in Giessen (4 

hectares), more formally the „Botanischer 

Garten der Justus-Liebig-Universität 

Gießen“, is a historic botanical 

garden maintained by the University of

for normal folk, potsdam’s sanssouci 

is a relaxing royal treat only 30 

minutes away by train from bustling 

berlin. in french, the palace’s name 

means “without a care;” it was a quiet 

refuge for the prussian king. his final 

wish was to be buried there, a desire 

not granted until after german 

reunification. 

this unesco world heritage site, built 

between 1745 and 1747, is known for its 

treasures inside and outside.

transportation hub in Europe and 

therefore a very busy city. It is not onlyy 

an ecnomic city but also culturally very 

rich. Its old centre called „Speicherstadt“ 

was declared as an UNESCO 

Wold Heritage Site in 2015. Visit the 

Elbe Philharmonic Hall. one of the many 

musicals or the miniature wonder land.

Miniature Wonderland 

the largest model railway in the 

world, and one of the most successful 

permanent exhibitions in northern 

germany. the miniatur wunderland is 

steadily growing. currently, there are 

9 completed model layouts: austria, 

knuffingen, middle germany, hamburg, 

usa, scandinavia, switzerland, 

knuffingen airport and italy. there are 

1040 model trains, 260,000 model 

figures and 9,250 model cars.

nightlife centres in hamburg and also 

it’s red-light-district. the street is 

lined with restaurants, night clubs, 

discotheques and bars. there are also 

strip clubs, sex shops, brothels, a sex 

museum and similar businesses.

GARBAGE, DEPOSIT, SMOKING, ... 

NO SMOKING LAW 

German no smoking laws are very 

strict. Smoking is prohibited in all public 

buildings, including bars, hotels, 

restaurants and nightclubs but also 

hospitals, schools, universities and 

train stations. However, in most states 

establishments like restaurants and 

bars are allowed to provide separate 

smoking rooms. Bavaria is the only 

state that does not allow smoking 

rooms. The state of Hesse even 

prohibits smoking in businesses. Fines 

for violation range from 5 to 1000 Euro. 

If in doubt, please ask whether smoking 

is allowed or not. 

PFAND (DEPOSIT) 

„Pfand“ is a certain portion of the price 

on a bottled or canned drink that you 

get back if you return the bottle/can to a 

certified outlet. For glass or heavy-duty 

plastic bottles that can be refilled (in 

German: “Mehrwegflaschen“), this can 

be between 0.08€ and 0.25€ per bottle. 

For recyclable but non-reusable thin 

plastic bottles and aluminium cans, 

(known as “Einwegflaschen“), it’s €0.25 

per bottle.
