INTERNATIONAL
ECONOMIC LAW &
BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS
International economic law is a rapidly
developing area of international law
concerned principally with international
trade, investment, finance and banking.
The course provides a theoretical and
practical understanding of the regulatory
framework of the international trade
system and is as well addressing a
range of other legal issues arising from
different kinds of international business
transactions.
The course begins with providing a
general understanding of international
trade law and the international legal
system, allowing you to place international
economic relations in context. You
will explore questions of governance
through studies of the World Trade
Organization and examine the mechanics
of more specific systems such as
international trade law, international
investment, international commercial
arbitration, international intellectual
property law and international corporate
governance.
course time:
BUSINESS ETHICS AND
HUMAN RIGHTS LAW
The course will explore the links
between business and human rights,
including questions regarding state
obligations and the extent to which
business entities such as multinational
corporations have human rights
responsibilities. It considers developments
on the international and
domestic level to promote accountability
and to ensure compliance with
emerging standards. We will discuss
several areas that pose particularly
difficult human rights challenges for
companies (extractive industries,
supply chain labor standards, operating
in conflict areas), examining key issues
and exploring how companies, civil
society organizations, governments
and other stakeholders have sought to
address these.
COMPARATIVE LAW
This course introduces students to
various interesting questions in comparative
constitutional law on the basis of
selected constitutional instruments
from different jurisdictions. Firstly, we
will enter into a discussion of structural
issues, including comparative approaches
to the separation of powers and
judicial review. Secondly, we will
analyze different approaches to
federalism, among others addressing a
comparison of competitive and
cooperative models respectively.
Thirdly, we will explore the question of
constitutional change, focusing on how
constitutions are amended and how
new constitutions are written. Finally,
we will address comparative approaches
to individual rights, including the
question of positive rights.
CYBER LAW
This course will focus on the regulation
of media and communication technology
(and the Internet in particular) in a
world of increasingly porous borders.
The class will focus on the transnational
aspects of the problems raised by
communication technology, but will
also include some discussion of
national regulatory schemes (primarily
Europe and North America) in a comparative
perspective. The first part of the
course will address the broad issue of
regulating a global communications
network.
For example, how do governments
regulate a network that transcends
borders? Can the Internet be regulated
at all? How does the Internet change, if
at all, the way in which government
operates?
Does it change the way we think about
our international regime? The second
part of the course will cover a series of
important topics addressing information
flows in cyberspace (for example,
freedom of speech, privacy, copyright
and trademark).
Course time:
02:15 pm - 03:45 pm
Speakers:
professor dr. anuj desai
LANGUAGE COURSES
Beside the law classes, participants will
be able to attend German language
courses in the afternoon (extra costs
might occur). If you are interested in
attending a German language course,
please contact the Help Desk (Office).
Course time:
A pharmacy in Germany is called an
Apotheke. This Apotheken are easily
identified by a large, red A on the
outside of their locations.
All medications, including non-prescription
drugs, are kept on shelves
behind the counter or in large drawers
behind the counter or in a back room.
There is normally a selection of different
types of non-medicinal health related
products in the pharmacy. Included in
that selection you could expect homeopathic
products. Pharmacists are highly
trained and will always ask if you
understand the dosages regarding
prescriptions. They can also offer
advice on non-prescription medicines,
ointments and other products that you
can use to treat minor ailments. A wide
variety of name brand drugs as well as
generic drugs are normally kept on
hand. If a medicine you need is not in
stock, it can usually be ordered for pick
up in a few hours or the following day.
TIPPING AND SERVICE
Service and VAT are included in the
menu prices in restaurants, bars, etc. all
over Germany. Still it is typical to “round
up” the amount to some more-or-less
round figure. A rule of thumb is to add
5-10%, generally ending with a full Euro
amount. When the waiter/waitress
comes up to your table after you have
finishes, you have to tell them the
amount including tip that you want to
pay (via cash or credit card).
SPLITTING A CHECK
This custom is not uncommon. Simply
tell the waiter/waitress the items you
are paying for when paying. She/He will
readily add up your amounts and
present you with a personal total, which
you should round up, as explained
above. The waiter/waitress is likely to
come up at the end of the meal and ask
“All together?” or in German “Zusammen?”.

FRANKFURT AM MAIN
... IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER
AND ALWAYS WORTH A VISIT.
A GUIDE FOR YOUR SUMMER IN GIESSEN
Frankfurt am Main, the dynamic and
international financial and trading city
with the most imposing skyline in
Germany: This is the image that many
visitors associate with the metropolis.
Nevertheless the city in the heart of
Germany and Europe can offer many
other facets and contrasting varieties.
Near to the skyscrapers you can find
cosy „Apfelwein“ pubs and in the
bustling city centre you can find
historical sights again and again.
Frankfurt is not just proud of its most
famous son, Johann Wolfgang von
Goethe, the Kaiserdom (Cathedral) and
the Paulskirche, the cradle of German
democracy, are also worth a visit.
Last but not least, and indeed difficult
to believe, the financial metropolis is
not a stone juggernaut, but rather a very
green city!
GOING TO FRANkFURT:
trains from giessen runs every 30
minutes to frankfurt and back. the
journey takes about 40 minutes. the
trip costs 15 euros. we recommend to
use trains labeld „ire“, „re“, „rb“ or
„hlb“. avoid „ic“ or „ice“ since they are
very expensive.
TICKETS:
it's best to buy tickets (15 €) at the
train station.
GARBAGE, DEPOSIT, SMOKING, ...
NO SMOKING LAW
German no smoking laws are very
strict. Smoking is prohibited in all public
buildings, including bars, hotels,
restaurants and nightclubs but also
hospitals, schools, universities and
train stations. However, in most states
establishments like restaurants and
bars are allowed to provide separate
smoking rooms. Bavaria is the only
state that does not allow smoking
rooms. The state of Hesse even
prohibits smoking in businesses. Fines
for violation range from 5 to 1000 Euro.
If in doubt, please ask whether smoking
is allowed or not.
PFAND (DEPOSIT)
„Pfand“ is a certain portion of the price
on a bottled or canned drink that you
get back if you return the bottle/can to a
certified outlet. For glass or heavy-duty
plastic bottles that can be refilled (in
German: “Mehrwegflaschen“), this can
be between 0.08€ and 0.25€ per bottle.
For recyclable but non-reusable thin
plastic bottles and aluminium cans,
(known as “Einwegflaschen“), it’s €0.25
per bottle.
