TWO THE HONOLULU REPUBLICAN, FRIDAY, JUNE 14, igor.
arrival of the City of Peking
the American ship J. B.
yesterday and the de-
parture of the Peking and Carlysle
City were the principal events
on the waterfront. The Peking arrived
oC the harbor and anchored
yesterday morning early and entered
the harbor soon after snnrise. She
brought six tons of freight for this
port and several passengers besides
a big mail
The Carlysle City after a two days
stay here sailed yesterday afternoon
and the barks Nuuanu and Gerard C.
Tobey got away also. The former
sailed to Kahnlni to load sugar for
New York and the Tobey to San Francisco.
Today the China is expected from
.the Orient-- She will sail tomorrow
afternoon and will take a great many
passengers from here when she
leaves.
After Pacific Mail.
SAN FRANCISCO, June 6. The
Pacific Mall steamer Coptic seems to
,be particularly unfortunate In unauthorized
distribution of Chinese passengers
at this port When at her dock
on May 13th a Chinese ticketed for
Mazatlan eluded the company's watchmen
and escaped, on the 15th another
Chinese failed to answer to roll call,
and on the 17th a third was reported
missing. The last two were destined
for this port, but had not been passed
on by the Collector. There were five
customs inspectors detailed on the
vessel at the time, but it Is not any
part of their duty to watch the
Chi-.nes- e,
for whom the steamship people
are responsible. Cdllector Strattnn
has reported the negligence' of the
company's employes to United States
District Attorney , Wood worth,, who
will bring action to recover the penalty
of $500 each, prescribed in the immigration
regulations. Woodworth
says, however, that he is doubtful regarding
the result, as the special legislation
covering Chinese Immigrants
throws the burden on the master of
the vessel only in cases of gross negligence,
or where conspiracy can be
shown to smuggle the Chinese on
shore.
An attempt was made yesterday by
a Chinese on the City of Peking to
run up a freight gangplank and escape
to friends waiting on the freight-cumbere- d
dock, where he could have eluded
capture. Customs Inspector Liddy
was too quick for him, and. with the
assistance of the inspector in charge,
vousht him and locked him nn.
Sugar vessels in a Gale.
