120. Australian Mother-Of-Pearl Brooches, c1900-1920s. Seven<br />

brooches mounted in gold or silver, some with coloured stones or enamel.<br />

(a) Oval Brooch With Simple Surround, c1900-1920s. Gold-mounted,<br />

1.8 x 3.9 x 1cm.<br />

(b) Oval Blister Pearl Brooch, c1900. Gold-mounted, maker’s mark “W.<br />

Coltman” and 15ct stamp verso, 3.4 x 5.9 x 1.4cm.<br />

New Zealand jeweller W. Coltman was established in 1883 in Queen Street, Auckland.<br />

(c) Oval Cabochon Brooch With Openwork Surround, c1900-1920s.<br />

Gilt metal, 2.9 x 5.3 x 2cm.<br />

(d) Floral Design Brooch, c1900-1920s. Gold-mounted, carved motherof-pearl<br />

brooch with safety chain, maker’s mark “JWD” with “Fremantle”<br />

and stamped 9ct, verso, 2.5 x 4.3 x 1.3cm.<br />

The maker, J.W. Dunkerton, was based in Fremantle, Western Australia during the<br />

1890s. Dunkerton’s work is held in NGA.<br />

(e) Heart-Shaped Brooch With Floral Filigree, c1910s. Gilt metal with<br />

mother-of-pearl with coloured stone and safety chain, 5.1 x 5.2 x 2cm.<br />

(f) Pendant Brooch With Drop, c1910s. Engraved mother-of-pearl and drop with<br />

one clear and two pink stones set in gilt metal, 6.8 x 4.5 x 2.4cm.<br />

The drop may have been an earring made around 1870. The red stones appear to be garnet.<br />

(g) Moon And Southern Cross Brooch, c1920s. Mother-of-pearl set in silver with<br />

applied enamel and hand-painting, Southern<br />

Cross design made up of fixed metal stars and<br />

safety chain, stamped “S. [Sterling] Silver” verso,<br />

4.6 x 4.6 x 1.1cm.<br />

121. Australian Brooches Showing Scottish<br />

Coat Of Arms, c1920s-1930s. Pair of engraved<br />

and pierced silver brooches, both with maker’s<br />

mark “Sargison Silver” verso, 2.9 x 3.8 x 0.9cm,<br />

3.2 x 4.5 x 0.8cm.<br />

The pair $2,200<br />

One brooch features cranes with the motto “N’Oubliez”,<br />

the family crest of James Graham, Duke of Montrose,<br />

Scotland. The second brooch features rabbits and a<br />

unicorn head with the motto “Over Fork Over”, the coat of<br />

arms of the Cunningham clan of Ayrshire, Scotland.<br />

Sargison’s was a prominent firm of manufacturing jewellers<br />

and silversmiths in Hobart, Tasmania, managed by Harold<br />

Sargison (active 1920-1980). Ref: New York Times,<br />
