hen you watch someone playing
WWarcraft, Clash of Clans or League
of Legends, you find them totally
immersed in the game. They can
become completely absorbed in
achieving a personal best with every
new level they reach.
Now, imagine if you could derive
this same level of engagement in the
work place and apply it to problem-solving, innovating
new products and tools, and honing new skills.
Gamification is defined as taking the main attributes of
gaming—such as engagement, transparency, teamwork
and strategising—and applying them to real-world
processes inside an organisation such as developing areas
of marketing and leadership.
Young entrepreneur, Ricky Tjandra (pronounced
Chandra) strongly believes the skills he has honed
from years of gaming complement his work ethic, and
contribute towards achieving his goals.
Ricky, a Malaysian permanent resident, of Indonesian-
Chinese and Taiwanese parentage, is an avid virtual
gamer and paintballer. Hitting his stride at 30 years of
age, he has been on a paint splattering haunt for the last 4
years – and loving it!
“Initially it did hurt and I came back quite sore,” laughs
the middle child of Hendrik Tjandra and Josephine Tien
Chin Hsiang. “I am used to it now. Once the adrenaline is
pumping, you don’t really feel the force of the paint balls.”
Ricky plays an average of once every fortnight and
regularly takes part in tournaments. Currently, Ricky is
attached to Team Kamikaze.
Ricky’s foray into the realm of gaming was mooted
by his father, who bought a Nintendo for himself and
introduced the world of Mario to Ricky as a child.
“Personally I am into Lord’s Mobile, which is similar to
Clash Of Clans,” explains Ricky of his gaming preferences.
“I have been an avid gamer since college, when the days
seemed so long and the nights where when sleep was
almost non-existent.”
“I get my gaming cue from my father,” laughs Ricky.
“His commitment towards his gaming hobby never ceases
to amaze me. Since going into semi-retirement, my father
has had more time on his hands, and more ‘hands’ to
manage multiple gaming devices at a time. Seeing him
with five phones laid out in front of him, playing one
game using different identities, is a common sight. You
can tell that he takes his gaming seriously because he
would postpone dinner just to accommodate his precious
game time!”
Whilst Ricky isn’t on his gaming consul 24-7, he does
afford some time to venturing into virtual realms.
“I cannot partake in such luxuries over long durations
when I have to run my own business,” he divulges. “As a
managing partner of VIZ Interactive Sdn Bhd, a relatively
new startup that provides Smart Home systems to
property developers and home owners, much of my time
is centred around developing the business.”
These smart home solutions include appliances and
digital systems such as air conditioning, motorised
curtains, alarms, CCTV, digital doorlocks and lighting, all
of which can be controlled remotely via voice-control.
Given the competitive nature of his business, Ricky knows
all too well the importance of staying ahead of the game.
“The tenets of managing a business are similar to that
of gaming,” explains Ricky, who graduated in Business
Management from RMIT University in Melbourne. “In
some subconscious manner, I have been honing skills in key
management areas and have been able to apply them to my
business.”
It’s the ‘I-don’t-want-to-lose’ attitude that drives gamers
like Ricky to succeed, and in a competitive and fast-moving
market, it’s imperative to deploy the right skill set and make
your mark.
“Negotiation skills are crucial,” he shares. “In gaming, there
is usually a trading system where you can trade items, sell or
even buy them. You learn about the value of the items from
the point of supply and demand, as well as how desperate the
other player is. If all goes your way, you can sell at a higher
price than what’s out there in the market. You can even
negotiate peace terms with other guilds or clans during a war.
It’s a good platform to understand the diversity of players
from different races, geographical locations, ages and genders.
Likewise, on the business platform, managing a diverse group
of employees or dealing with a diverse set of clientele, calls for
different negotiation skills.”
“Communications is key when managing a guild or
kingdom during wars,” Ricky explains. “Having to coordinate
between 100 members is difficult. It would involve
strategising different groups, in smaller numbers to target
certain locations and to achieve the results you want. Giving
correct instructions and relaying it effectively and efficiently
will help the kingdom or guild achieve success. There are
also real time reports and updates on the status of the guild.
This is another trait similar to the corporate world, where
proper communications amongst the team, and strategies
which are communicated well can garner success. Market
reports and competitor analysis would also help in strategy
planning, as well as indicating market position to your
clients.”
Another tenet is time management. The process of
planning and having conscious control over how much
time one spends on events or work activities may increase
the level of effectiveness and productivity. “There are a lot
of events inside a game,” divulges Ricky. “These keep you
occupied, thus you would have to prioritise which of these
events would benefit you the most and you would in turn,
focus on that.”
“You would not be able to play a game around the clock as
you would need to factor in rest, work and hobbies amongst
“The tenets of managing
a business are similar to
that of gaming. In some
subconscious manner,
I have been honing skills
in key management areas
and have been able to apply
them to my business.”
other things. You would need to manage your personal time
efficiently in order to join the event. There are also troops
with different skill levels to train. You would need to manage
your time in a manner whereby you maximise efficiency and
utilise the time available. It’s no different from the corporate
world where you would need to plan your time to manage
deadlines with what you can currently work on.”
“Problems do not discriminate. They hit all of us at some
point. Even in games, there is a fair amount of problemsolving
such as disputes between members, resource
management and strategies. To top that off, games usually
have bugs, especially those in its beta stage. I used to be a
beta tester before the official launch of a game. I would test
the games out and report on bugs or issues I encounter and
give recommendations on how to fix those issues, or even
improve the game itself. This is similar to how we would
manage problem-solving in the work place.”
Like any organisation, management styles differ, and in
the virtual world, it is no different. “Different people manage
their guilds or wars differently. They come from different
cultures. They approach and strategise by weighing the pros
and cons of each situation with the person assigned to the
task.”
From the realms of guilds and wars to the corporate world,
Ricky knows too well that all work and no play, a dull boy
makes, and reaping the diverse knowledge and experience
the former brings, makes gaming all the more attractive.
Inspirational Tales
Celebrate strong women who have changed the perception of societal structures.
Curated by Avinash sagran & MPH BOOKSTOREs
I Know Why the Caged
Bird Sings
Maya Angelou
The book is a candid portrayal
of the issues plaguing black
women growing up in the
south. Angelou’s depiction
of substantial issues such as
rape, racism and identity was
revolutionary at the time of its
release in 1969. Penning down
her experience through wit
and wisdom, she challenges the
constructs of social hierarchy
and soothes the tension by
placing emphasis on the
healing process.
with her family who are to
go into hiding during the
Nazi occupation of Germany
book delves in the depth of a
remarkable woman behind
her significant contribution
acknowledges Cixi flaws
but does not portray her as
a ruthless iron-fisted leader.
She instead identifies Cixi’s
all the modernisation brought
Tetsuko Kuroyanagi
Kuroyanagi recounts her childhood as a schoolgirl which
the notion of freedom of expression through the actions
of headmaster Sosaku Kobayashi, who gave children
free reign to explore and understand values that shape a
holistic individual. Her story serves as an inspiration to
many educators and reminds children not to be afraid
Changing Tunes
Making bold moves, these crossover musicians proved that taking the risk paid off.
“Bob Dylan’s “Bringing It All Back Home,”
has as strong a claim as any album
of its day to be called the spark that
ignited the music of the 1960s”
- Richard B. Woodward, The Wall Street Journal
Curated by Tania jayatilaka
Bringing it All
Back Home
Bob Dylan
1965 was an iconic year
for then folk and country
singer, Bob Dylan. Despite
his roaring success with
1960’s protest movement
folk songs like ‘Blowing in
the Wind’ and ‘The Times
They Are A Changin’’’,
Dylan shocked his fans with
the release of his 1965 album
Bringing It All Back Home.
With this offering, he puts
his songwriting skills to
work with electric rock and
stumbling upon a new genre
of folk rock. This album
was the first of many to
come in which Dylan would
continually reinvent his
music style as an artist.
She’s So Unusual
Cyndi Lauper
Cyndi Lauper’s distinct
high-pitched voice and
party-girl persona first hit
listeners with the rockabilly
tunes of Blue Angel, the
band she co-founded in 1978.
The one album released by
Blue Angel in 1980 tanked,
only reinforcing Lauper’s
determination to ditch
rockabilly and make her
winning transition over
to pop music. With her
1983 solo album She’s So
Unusual she became the first
female artist to have four
Top 5 singles in one album,
including unforgettably
catchy hits like ‘Girls Just
Wanna Have Fun’ and
‘Time After Time’.
Jagged Little Pill
Alanis Morissette
In her 1991 debut album
Alanis, Canadian artist
Alanis Morissette had
churned out plenty of
feel-good dance pop songs
before she even graduated
from high-school.
Come 1995, Morissette
released her third album,
Jagged Little Pill, going
international with a
totally different vibe that
set the stage for her angsttinged
alternative rock
voice. With this album, she
took home four Grammy
awards - including one for
Album of the Year in 1996,
topped the Billboard 200
and sold over 30 million
copies worldwide.
Kenny Rogers
In his early days,
Kenny Rogers tried
everything from rock
to jazz- even mixing
folk, rock and country
into the trippy hit
‘Just Dropped In’ with
his band, the New Christy Minstrels in 1966. After
going solo, he released his first studio album with
United Artists Records in 1976, entitled Love Lifted
Me. The title track made it to the Top 20 Country
Hits in 1975, when it was first released as a single.
Subsequent albums won him Grammy awards and
more, but this one marks his official decision to
stick with country music.
Revisit the jaw-dropping transformations of four actors for their on-screen
roles in award-winning films.
Charlize Theron in
Monster
Charlize Theron
temporarily traded in
her stunning beauty for
a blotchy, eyebrow-less
appearance in her role
as Aileen Wuornos in
the 2003 film “Monster”.
Theron gained over 13kg
and wore prosthetic teeth
to get a closer resemblance
to the real-life Aileen
Wuornos, a prostitute
who became a convicted
serial murderer. Theron
wore contact lenses for
the part and had her skin
airbrushed with a thin
layer of tattoo ink for a
haggard, sun-scorched
appearance.
Jared Leto in Chapter 27
Jared Leto was famous for his decidedly feminine appearance as a
transgender woman in the 2013 film “Dallas Buyer’s Club” and was nearly
unrecognisable as the Joker in “Suicide Squad” in 2016. Nine years earlier,
the actor and singer-songwriter gained around 30kg to play Mark David
Chapman in the 2007 film “Chapter 27”, an eerie dramatisation of John
Lennon’s murderer in the days leading up to the assassination.
Halle Berry in Cloud Atlas
In the 2012 movie “Cloud Atlas”, Halle Barry plays six incredibly
different characters. The ingenious work of hair and makeup artists
Daniel Parker, Jeremy Woodland and others transformed Barry
for character roles like the blonde Jewish-German woman Jocasta
Ayrs, and Korean man, Dr. Ovid, complete with a moustache and
frightful-looking teeth. The larger-than-life storyline of Cloud
Atlas takes place over several centuries, following characters and
stories linked across past, present and future.
Genre: Fantasy, Science Fiction
Tom Hardy in Bronson
The normally slender-bodied
and boyish-looking Tom Hardy
worked with an ex-marine
fitness trainer to gain 19kg of
the story of a man kept in
solitary confinement for more
than 30 years after a change in
his prison sentence for crime
he committed as a young man.
Although Millennial Pink dominated the Instagram feeds
The playful, amusing and surprising
work of Prague-born designer Boris
Klimek is characterised by its capacity
to delight and his Lollipop lighting
collection for Lasvit no different. Its
unusual organic shape and the platelike
surface is a result of Klimek’s
fascination with transparency and
perception and was achieved after
much experimentation with slumped
glass to get just the right colouring,
glint and internal structure.
Illuminated by an internal light
source held together by a metal holder,
the table and stand-alone lamps, as
well as pendant lights are reminiscent
of beloved childhood sweets.
Outdoor furniture has come a
long way from generic plastic deck
outdoor collection by Alessandro
Busana. What is, in essence, an
outdoor sofa set, the angular lines
of the polyethene are softened with
rounded corners to make for a less
severe profile. Available in various
modular setting, seat dimensions
are suitably generous and perfect
for slouching languidly on while
sipping on sundowners (there’s even
a small attachment to rest your
come in white, beige and sand while
cushions in tranquil shades of blue
Every year, fair attendees weary from the
claustrophobia of the fairgrounds and the sardinelike
showrooms of Via Tortona make the trek to
Paola Lenti’s installation which is always presented
in the grounds of a beautiful hidden garden. This
year, the renowned Italian textile innovator
opted for something a bit grittier, showing at
the Fabbrica Orobia 15 industrial site, a cool
cavernous early 20th-century building close to
the Fondazione Prada. Lush green trees and plants
added greenery to a collection whose core theme
was a transition towards more flexible spaces, where
indoor and outdoor are connected in a permanent
balance between accuracy and style. Colours were
typically vibrant (a Paola Lenti signature), and
rug techniques ranged from the intricate motifs of
Crochet to the woven linearity of Parallelo.
Reflecting an Italian aesthetic that’s more
funky new Galactica collection is inspired
by the world of metal and cyber reality.
Designed by Antonio Aricò, these new
colours, eccentric finishing and futuristic
details. Outrageous hues and sparkly
materials reinforce the unique sculptural
shapes, which one would imagine the
likes of Jeff Koons would love to have
in his home. altreforme is a company
aluminium furniture, and the Galactica
collection lived up to this, fashioned from
said metal which is also 100% recyclable.
Audacious Auteurs
Forget minimalism, eschew understatement, meet the four
flamboyant designers whose fearless work make you wonder why
you ever thought less is more.
WORDS by Jennifer Choo
Starck Contrast
The original enfant terrible of design, Philippe
Starck rose to rock star status in the 1980s on
a tsunami of glossy magazine articles about
how he flunked college, roared around Paris
on his motorcycle, locked himself away for
weeks to work, and tormented manufacturers
by tweaking designs at the very last minute.
Since then, the French designer has gone from
industry bad boy to its best-known rainmaker,
turning his hand at designing everything from
luxury yachts and a mineral water bottle to
François Mitterrand’s presidential apartments
at the Elysée Palace and squiggly pasta shapes.
Starck was the first “brand” designer, where
the fact that he WAS the brand was enough to
sell the product even though some of his more
infamous designs like the Juicy Salif lemon
squeezer for Alessi (1990), an object that became
an indispensable totem in the late 20th-century
interior, was utterly useless for its intended
function. Nonetheless, while public opinion
about him and his work may have waxed and
waned through the three decades, today Starck
is design’s elder statesman and his Midas touch
still highly sought after by high and low brow
clients alike. His designs, while still prolific
and thought to provoke, have also mellowed
with the environment being at the forefront
of his obsessions. Starck’s countless hotels and
restaurants around the world ranging from Le
Meurice in Paris, Mama Shelter in Lyon, AMO
in Venice and recently M Social in Singapore
continue to look like complete showcases of his
all-encompassing portfolio as Starck designs
the total environment from layout to furniture
to linens. Ironically for a man who’s designed
everything including the late Steve Job’s boat,
Starck does not own a computer and has no
e-mail address, but then as the most celebrated
and commercially successful designer in the
world, he probably doesn’t need it.
Novembre Reign
“The important thing, in the end, is to make
people smile - it’s what objects should do,”
Fabio Novembre declared in an interview with
CNN. This conviction has served him well
in a boundary-pushing yet successful career
built on Novembre’s confident, creative style
and persona. During his ‘90s debut, Novembre
was hailed as a design prodigy as this trained
architect bucked the prevailing minimalist
trend by proposing flamboyant furniture in
an explosion of colour. This flashiness can be
ascribed to Novembre’s roots, the city of Lecce,
Puglia, South Italy, renowned for its stunning
baroque architecture. His eccentric, charismatic
personality also helped, and he was one of the
first designers to be featured on the cover of
design magazines (unheard of at that time),
although Novembre was also notorious for
his willingness to be shot naked. The Italian
designer’s frankly sexual work frequently
celebrates the nude form like the notorious
Him & Her chairs for Casamania which were
modelled after the iconic Panton chairs except
with a suggestive twist. His tenure as an art
director at Biasazza in the early noughties
catapulted the luxury glass mosaic company
into the design big leagues with voluptuous
showrooms in New York, Milan, Barcelona and
Berlin where the spaces were selling tools in
themselves. To date, his work continues to teeter
between provocation and poetry, contemporary
art and design. His masterful command of
space, evident in everything from his ambitious
solo exhibitions to his contemporary stylings
for restaurants, nightclubs and shops like UNA
Hotel Vittoria, HIT Gallery, Stuart Weitzman
and the W Brera, Milan, make it abundantly
clear that Novembre is as irrepressible as his
exuberant designs.
Dubbed the Prince and/or Poet of Plastic,
it’s impossible to ignore Karim Rashid and
his work – the man himself is 6’4”, dressed
completely in pink or white (he carries a Tide
To Go stain stick to touch up his white suits
although he’s recently taken to experimenting
with lime green) and his designs are ubiquitous
and unmistakably him – futuristic, sensually
minimalistic and in glorious Technicolor.
Born in Egypt, raised in England, educated in
Canada, and worked in Italy for a few years
before opening his own studio in New York in
1993 (where he is still based), this half-Egyptian,
half-English designer is one of the most
prolific designers of his generation with over
3000 designs in production, over 300 awards
and having worked in over 40 countries. He
has made an art of bringing new ideas and
innovation to the widest-possible audience
with designs for brands which run the gamut
from high-end (Veuve Clicquot, Kenzo and
Christofle) to the everyday (Method, Umbra,
Starbucks) and is committed to beautifying
even the most quotidian objects like manhole
covers, baby bottles and even sex toys. His
forays into architecture and interior design
have resulted in mischievous, optimistic spaces
which invite the user to play like Magik Hotel
Norway, NHow Hotel Berlin and Prizeotel
Germany. And while the designer is emphatic
he has no favourites while shuttling effortlessly
between disciplines, he admits he loves the
immediate impact an interior can have on
people’s lives: “With hospitality design or
public space, I know that masses of people
have access to my designs, and they aren’t just
looking at it, they are physically immersing
themselves inside of the design. I have the
power to affect them on a social level, whether
it is to provide relaxing solitude, community,
or a pleasurable vacation.”
All Who Wanders Are Not Lost
Dutch, dashing and very, very daring, Marcel
Wanders is a man of grand statements and
has this to say about being boring: “There’s
enough of that in life as it is. I’m interested
in designing things that will excite people
and make them feel alive.” Indeed alive,
unsettled and at least a little amused is the
typical reaction to Wanders’ outré oeuvre.
Wanders grew up in Boxtel, the Netherlands,
graduated cum laude from the School of the
Arts Arnhem in 1988 and shot to fame with his
now iconic Knotted Chair produced for Droog
Design in 1996. Since then, the provocative
and philosophical Dutch designer has created
home furnishings and accessories for dozens
of international firms, completed fantastical
hotel and retail interiors around the world. In
parallel to his studio, he is the owner and art
director of Moooi, whose groundbreaking yet
edgy products have made the brand a darling
of the design cognoscenti. His hospitality
projects like IBEROSTAR Grand Hotel Portals
Nous (Spain), Mira Moon (Hong Kong),
Mondrian DOHA, Mondrian South Beach,
Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht among
others, manage to marry functionality with
surprise, wit and boldness. Although at his
essence, Wanders is more romantic than
renegade as his mission statement states: “Here
to create an environment of love, live with
passion, and make our most exciting dreams
come true.” Ultimately while Wanders’ work
excites, provokes, and polarises, it never
fails to surprise for its ingenuity, daring and
singular quest to uplift the human spirit,
and entertain, which for the designer, who
the New York Times called the Lady Gaga of
design, is certainly his greatest achievement.
Golfing is made perfect by the warm and gentle trade winds, mild
temperatures and sunny skies of Hawaii.
THE SWING
GOLFING is beautiful in Hawaii
with courses that come with
magnificent scenery, lush
tropical vegetation, dramatic
cliff-top locations and
spectacular views of the Pacific
Ocean.
Most parts of Hawaii have only two seasons –
summer from May to October, and winter from
November to April. The temperature hovers
between 29-32°C in the summer, and it gets
gentler in winter with readings of 26-28°C.
Even in winter months, rain and cloud cover
are intermittent. Golfers should get ample tee
time in the sun. With the best climate for golf
and 110 courses to choose from, Hawaii is indeed
a golfing paradise.
Golfers will be spoilt for choice as it is home
to challenging as well as friendly golf courses
that won’t hurt the ego of a high-handicapper.
Teeing off oceanfront greens into scenic
fairways on courses carved out of sprawling
volcanic black lava fields is without a doubt a
golfing experience to cherish.
We take a look at five of Hawaii’s most
inviting and playable courses:
Manele Golf Course in Lanai
There is a lot of visual drama here with
the course perched on top 60-metre cliffs,
ensuring a panoramic view of the ocean on
all 18 holes. The fairways are lined by black
lava outcroppings.
Beautiful colours come into play in this
magnificent palette of golf as the red cliffs
plunge to the blue of the sea as you stand in
green fairways dotted with white sand traps,
and surrounded by a myriad of shades and
hues of the blossoms from fissures in the
black lavarock.
Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this 6,436m
par-72 championship course can fool you into
thinking that you can return a scorecard free
from blemish. Beware as hazards are aplenty to
punish wayward shots.
In fact, it has one of the most unforgiving
water hazards in the world at Hole No. 12. With
the pacific waters surging below, golfers need
to clear 180m of churning waves to avoid a bad
score on this testing hole.
More challenges await as there are other
gaping ravines to swallow hooks and slices on
this course. Fret not, since its five-tee concept
— with courses of shorter yardage mapped
in red, white, blue, gold and “Nicklaus” —
allows golfers of all levels a fighting chance to
emerge unscathed.
It’s interesting variety of short par-4s,
testing par-5s, and nine doglegs make the
Manele Course a beautiful test of golf.
THE SWING
The Club at Hokuli’a
Kukui’ula Golf Course in Koloa
This course is situated in Hawaii’s most
luxurious club, and as such, it is designed to
be friendly and to appeal to players of all ages
and skill levels. The picturesque par-72 course
features paspalum-turf, sand-plated fairways
and a landscape filled with native flora.
Designed by British Open winner Tom
Weiskopf, this slice of golf paradise has 18
holes of ocean views and eye-popping beauty.
Bunkers with white sand add to the visual
experience at Kukui’ula. The greens can be
approached with aerial or bump-and-run shots.
Play on this course starts with a stout
opening hole, with the shot into the prevailing
winds. Grassy swale slithers down the
entire left side of the golf hole from tee to
green, which is the largest on the course at
2,773 metres.
A birdie is possible after a two-on
regulation, but golfers need to pay attention
to the subtleties in this green so as not to blow
the hole.
Hole 16 is the most scenic as a well as
challenging. It is a risk-reward par-4 hole since
golfers can opt for the tiger line by cutting the
corner on the left. If not executed well, the ball
will be out of bounds in the native area right of
the fairway.
The Club at Hokuli’a on The Big Island
If life is measured by moments that take your
breath away, be prepared to be blown away by
this majestic Jack Nicklaus Signature Course
on the west side of Hawaii’s Big Island. The fun
starts with its stunning setting that provides
ocean views throughout the course.
Sitting atop a terrain that slopes 120m to
sea level, Hokuli’a may appear to be windswept.
However, its unique sheltered location cuts out the
strong winds that punish golfers, allowing passage
only to gentle breezes.
Its golfing drama starts at the first tee where
a breathtaking downhill shot that enables
significant hang time. It is always a wonderful sight
to see the ball in flight as it descends to the fairway.
This course is generous off the tee, but the test is
the approach shots where accuracy with your irons
will make you a happy golfer. To throw in more
challenges, there are several water hazards and a
handful of bunkers on each hole. Good iron play is a
must on the 18 holes here.
The signature hole at Hokuli’a is its 445m par-4
Hole 15, which is as much a visual treat as it is a test
of golfing skill. This tee box treats golfers with a
view of colours, ranging from black lava and white
bunkers to green grass and sparkling blue waters.
Palm trees stand magnificently along the
fairway that doglegs left as well as behind the
green. A long drive will set you up with a short-iron
approach. It is no wonder that many golfers end up
talking about Hole 15 after a round at Hokuli’a.
THE SWING
Mauna Kea Golf Course in Kamuela
This multiple award-winning 6,739m par-72
layout has set the standards for beauty and design
since 1964, making it one of Hawaii’s most scenic
and favoured courses. Designed by Robert Trent
Jones Sr, the 18-hole championship course can be a
handful on blustery days.
There are 120 well-placed bunkers on the
course that is rounded by seaside cliffs that offer
views of the beautiful Kohala Coast. As charming
as it looks, it comes with elevated, undulating
greens and coastal winds that demand accuracy.
Not all the holes are oceanfront, but the
course meanders through the terrain and features
picture postcard fairway views.
It spectacular signature hole is its Hole No.
3, where surging inlet water races to meet the
rocky shoreline. The hole requires a dramatic
carry across a rocky shoreline, where nooks and
crannies host the Pacific as well as hundreds of
lost golf balls.
Its 309m par-4 Hole No. 6 is another exciting
challenge. The elevated tee box makes it a
driveable par four. But to be prudent, most golfers
would opt for a long iron to the wide portion of its
fairway. Its saucer green is pretty deep which will
reward good lofted approach hits.
THE SWING
Kapalua Golf in Maui
Last but certainly not least, we look at Hawaii’s
arguably most talked-about course. It is
challenging, but it is fun as well. This is one of
the most beautiful courses in the world.
Kapalua Golf is home to an awe-inspiring
golfing spectacle. With holes that are set like
jewels by the sea, on turquoise lagoons, on the
slopes of old volcanoes, and by lush rain forests,
it is unmatched in many ways.
It offers golfers a unique opportunity to tee
off to the immense ocean blue, take on fairways
that are wrapped around a dormant volcano, and
putt under tropical rainbows.
The Plantation Course, which was designed
by famed golf architects Ben Crenshaw and Bill
Coore, stretches out across natural geographic
formations and pineapple plantation fields.
Do bear in mind that this beauty is also a
beast. Its lengthy 7,411 yard par-73 layout may
be imposing as that distance challenges even the
more- accomplished players. Fear not, as its wide
fairways, and generous greens render the course
more playable for the average golfer.
With dramatic elevation changes, Kapalua
offers plenty of downhill tee shots. Hole 18 is a
bomber’s paradise, where long hitters can let
loose. With the help of the aggressive slope of the
18th fairway, golfers could be in for one of the
longest drives of their lives.
THE TIME
Crazy
Over
Colour
We celebrate those exuberant timepieces whose bright colours
jump out from the middle of the spectrum between serious dark
colours and demure pastels
WORDS by Tania Jayatilaka
Some of the most iconic wrist-watches
emerged from dark and intense
colour palettes of indigo, black or
grey. If they didn’t bear the sheen of
stainless steel, rose gold or a different
type of precious metal, they took on a soft white
or some pastel shade that suited a neutral lighttoned
outfit. In a respectful detour from the two
extremes, we’re turning our sights this summer
to watch collections that have thrown neutral
out the window (at least for now) to make room
for the flamboyant.
Famous like Fendi
Straps are a unique detail that can enhance the
look of an outfit or sandal. The same goes for
watches, as is illustrated in Fendi’s undeniably
fun Selleria ‘Strap You’ 36mm piece. The watch
boasts of interchangeable double-tour straps
that are made from calf-skin leather, attached
to an exquisite mother-of-pearl Astuccio dial
designed by Karl Lagerfeld.
The whole look is inspired by Fendi’s famous
Selleria ‘Strap You’ shoulder strap collection,
replicating onto the watch strap the row of
multi-coloured flowers and Lucite studs that
have been carefully worked into the leather
by Fendi ateliers in Italy. Wearers can choose
from seven strap versions of various colours to
match different accessories- or even the actual
Selleria shoulder straps for loyal patrons of the
namesake collection. The anthracite dial bears
silver hand-stitched Roman numeral indexes,
but another dial option of yellow gold is also
available.
All you have to do to change the strap is
to rotate the stainless steel case-back, and the
patented interchangeable strap system will
proof how easy it is to switch watch straps
whenever you’re in desperate need of a dash of
colour for the day.
THE TIME
“The classic shades
of black, indigo
and Victorinox red
welcomed a fourth
colour to the mix,
with a bright yellow
version.”
See In the Deep
Divers’ watches have been synonymous
with intense jet black or stainless
steel pieces whose giant
luminescent dials maintain
visibility in the darkest
conditions. It just makes sense
that Victorinox’s 2016 I.N.O.X
Professional Diver amped up
the visibility factor with a few
colour-popping options of its own.
The 45mm divers’ watch is shock-proof,
anti-magnetic, and resistant to vibration,
high pressure and extreme variation in
temperature.
The classic shades of black, indigo and
Victorinox red welcomed a fourth colour to
the mix, with a bright yellow version. Easily
worn over a diver’s suit, the watch’s gadrooned
rubber straps are extendable by 8mm. This
certified diving watch does not only give the
feel of a fun and hardy sports accessory, but
one that has met the rigorous NIHS 92-11 Swiss
watch-making standards. The Professional Diver
complies with the ISO 6425 standard, making it
resistant to thermal shock, high water pressure
and condensation.
A 2017 release by Victorinox is the I.N.O.X.
V, a watch for the multi-tasking woman who’s
always on the go. Just like the Professional Diver,
this ladies’ watch has undergone 130 durability
tests, making it as useful an accessory for an
active lifestyle as for work or play. Two pieces in
the collection come with a Naimakka paracord
attachment, offering of hot pink-grey or bluered
colour pairings for just a hint of brightness
without overpowering your style.
Keeping it Timeless
Gucci’s G-Timeless latest collection is ablaze
with new colours and gorgeous dial textures
that seem to come alive on the wearer’s wrist.
The latest line-up is the handiwork of creative
director Alessandro Michele, and it plays with
silhouettes, quirky little motifs and bold colours
without going overboard. The stand-out pieces
in this colour-splashed entourage are the new
29mm and 36mm models of the G-Timeless Slim
watch for women.
Strap on this vibrant piece and you’ll feel
like you’ve just walked out of a bustling fashion
show in Italy that’s rife with the colours of the
rainbow. The watch’s mother-of-pearl dial in
vivid colours of green, cherry red or pink make
up the backdrop to pyramidal indexes shaped in
Gucci’s signature honeybee motif, with stars and
hearts thrown in for good measure. If you love
this look but want to take the playroom-inspired
colour palette down a notch, try the version with
a white mother-of-pearl dial fitted with a marine
blue lizard skin strap.
Another attractive piece in the collection
is the Quartz Moonphase 36mm or 40mm
watch with its kaleidoscopic star-spangled
lacquered dial and eye-catching colour gradient
moonphase disc. A version of this watch comes
with a bright pink lizard strap and a matching
pink moonphase disc against a black dial with
white stars and planets interspersed throughout.
Throwback Chronograph
Notice anything familiar about the Portugieser
Chronograph Classic Ref. 3903? If you’re a
latest release by IWC Schaffhausen will catch
leave out the subtle details of its predecessor:
the railway-track chapter ring (now without
the subdivision of the seconds) and the
appliquéd Arabic numerals, to name a
few. Powered by the IWC-made 89361
calibre, this version comes in three
new colours, each with a transparent
sapphire glass case back that displays
the movement and the rotor bearing
the Geneva stripes design.
HEALTH
Skin Food
It’s never too early to adopt an anti-ageing
diet. Find out how what you eat links to the
overall wellbeing of your skin
WORDS by SHEREEN KHOO
Our skin health is dictated by the
nutritional status of the body,
amongst other factors. Skin
comprises of two main layers: the
epidermis and the dermis. It receives
nutrients from a topical application as well as
from nutrients supplied from the blood vessels.
As part of the natural process of ageing,
loss of collagen and elastin fibres are associated
with wrinkles or structural changes in the skin.
Other avoidable factors such as smoking and
UV exposure contribute to free radicals and
exacerbate skin ageing. Antioxidant nutrients
such as vitamin A (beta-carotene), vitamin
C, vitamin E and plant polyphenols play a
fundamental role in maintaining healthy
skin and repair damaged skin. Minerals,
zinc and selenium are also found in skin and
are important to establish good skin health.
Additionally, the essential fatty acids, omega-6
and omega-3 are necessary to maintain
structural integrity, and barrier function of
the skin and deficiencies can contribute to
dry skin.
Looking for beauty foods for natural
radiance and great looking skin? These foods
are worth adding to your grocery cart:
“Antioxidant
THE COOKBOOK
Distractions are everywhere: colours,
sounds, aromas. That’s why you’ll
be hopelessly preoccupied if you
visit one of Barcelona’s bustling
food markets and expect to spare
only a glance here and there. Not only are these
historic marketplaces huge, extremely popular,
and bursting with every colour imaginable,
they’re also home to several small bars and
eateries that are just waiting to be discovered
by travellers undeterred by the crowds and the
Barcelona summer heat.
ridays. Recent renovations to this
huge market space included a gorgeous mosaic
roof made of 325,000 ceramic pieces, designed
to recreate the colours and arrangements of
vegetable stalls. Packed with delis, bakeries,
fruit and vegetable counters, canned goods and
more, the marketplace is also home to several
bars and restaurants of varying cuisine.
The bar at Cuines Santa Caterina is
open every day from 9am to 11pm (open till
11.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays), while the
restaurant opens during lunch and dinner
hours. The highlight of coming here is the
promise of eating various meals cooked with
the freshest produce while enjoying the
spacious surroundings. The menu isn’t limited
to Catalan cuisine, with unique items like Thai
chicken curry and tuna tataki finding a place
beside local favourites of grilled artichokes,
Spanish omelette brochette and Cod canapé
with Samfaina (a tasty vegetable sauce not
unlike the French ratatouille).
Mercat Del Born Cultural Centre
The Mercat Del Born structure in Plaça
Comercial was the first iron-covered market
in the city at its inauguration, long before it
fell into disrepair around 2002. Neglected for a
while, Mercat Del Born got a major facelift in
2013 making it the bustling cultural centre that
it is today. Around the centre you’ll find shops
selling various foodstuffs; but it’s the number
of bars and restaurants available in these
quarters that will make the whole experience of
this former marketplace truly unique.
Unlike the other restaurants, EL 300 del Born
restaurant and bar is located in Plaça Comercial
itself, open from 10am to midnight (closed on
Mondays). The cuisine here is a mixture of classic
Catalan recipes merged with newer recipes
using fresh ingredients. Loved by locals for its
signature beers and tapas, it’s a modern-looking
gastronomic wonder that fits surprisingly
well against its gothic-style neighbourhood
surroundings. For a more rustic setting offering
fresh fish, lobster, velvet crabs, and other seafood
delights cooked in a traditional Mediterranean
style, the nearby La Gambeta restaurant on Carrer
de la Fusina is another must-try.
THE COOKBOOK
La Boqueria Market
La Boqueria Market or Mercat de Sant Josep
de la Boqueria is one of the most famous food
markets in Europe. The market opens from
8am to 8.30pm on Mondays to Saturdays, luring
the crowds with stacks upon stacks of fresh
vegetables, fruits, meats, seafood, dried spices,
candies and a variety of other items for cooking
or for snacking on the spot. Years of renovations
and touch-ups to the overall structure of the
market allowed for the installation of more
vendors and farmers from all around Catalonia,
as well as a few unique tapas bars in more
recent times.
Pinotxo Bar is a highly sought-after breakfast
spot in the area, situated to the right of the market
entrance. Hungry visitors gather here even earlier
than 8am to savour a Spanish omelette, bratwurst
sausages or grilled green peppers (Pimpientos
del Padrón) with a frothy cup of cappuccino. El
Quim restaurant is further inside, famous for
its fried eggs with baby squid and homemade
croquettes. Bar Central, located just past the fish
section, is another great spot to rest while enjoying
a meal of grilled fish and paella among a spread of
treats displayed on the counter under the warm,
inviting lights.
photographs by istockphotos
“It was soon
apparent that
the restaurant’s
spacious interior
with its crisp,
colonial aesthetics
would also make an
ideal brunch spot
for club members.”
THE DRINKS
American
Spirit
photographS by The savoy london
American Bar at Savoy London
serves new age cocktails, jazz
and glamour.
WORDS by Avinash Sagran
C
lassic cocktails like the Sazerac,
Manhattan, Old Fashioned and
Jack Rose remain in the popular
consciousness largely due to the
drink’s indefinite association
with personality. With the charming and
dapper Don Drapper and his Old Fashioned in
MadMen, James Bond’s Vesper Martini from
Casino Royale or the iconic fashionista, Carrie
Bradshaw’s Cosmopolitan from Sex in the City,
the cocktail scene is thriving similarly to the
golden-age of American cocktail between 1850
and Prohibition.
Signature cocktails from many television
and film character’s drinks have slowly
invigorated an interest in American heritage
spirits. The revitalised vigor in the art of
mixology has captured the heart of bar
patrons while summertime is synonymous
with indulging in a refreshing cocktail on
luminous starlit nights. As the new dawn arises
in mixology, bartenders have begun fusing old
techniques to their arsenal to create both classic
cocktails and new creations.
Bartending has become a craft, a way of life
while the days of fancy trickeries producing
multiple drinks in successive minutes are
behind us ! And mixologists are rated for
how well they make one drink. Patrons are
experiencing the advancement in cocktail
culture through flavours that many have
probably never experienced.
The Savoy’s American Bar sets itself apart
among London bars as the amalgamation of its
regal ivory colour pallet, glitz and glamorous
portraits of iconic stars, glistening baby
grand piano, the flawless jazz and the gracious
welcome from tuxedo-suited waiters ultimately
recreates the ambiance of retro glamour
symbolic to the American Jazz era.
Don’t be quick to judge the American Bar
retro interior and expect classic drinks; similar
to the Golden Era of Cocktails, as the bartenders
here have built a reputation to push the
boundaries with new concepts. Cocktail culture
is truly an expression through the creativity of
the bartender, as does the head bartender Erik
Lorincz at the American Bar who expresses
his passion through fresh ideas both visually
simulating and impeccable in taste.
On April 2017, American Bar manager
Declan McGurk and Erik Lorincz collaborated
in launching a new cocktail menu named ‘Coast
to Coast’ illustrating a journey across Britain
from the South to North. The menu details
inspiration from each location beginning
with the Garden of England and finishing at
Castle Rock. Celebrating and respecting each
location and its people, the menu showcases
the vibrant reflection of the island’s lush
landscapes, eternal folklore, illustrious history
and idiosyncratic appeals represented through
showstopper serves, experimental ingredients
and a plethora of flavours.
THE DRINKS
The carefully curated menu begins its
journey from the Garden of England, Kent.
The South East highlands covered in lush
greenery offers Kentish ingredients such as
cobnuts, hops and apples, inspiring long drinks
served in beautiful bespoke glass terrariums.
The drink, light and fresh, pays homage to the
flourishing and copious growth of this plush
green pocket.
The journey continues through swanky
and elegant London with the opulent Art Deco
era and decadent sophistication serving as
inspiration. Classic and heady, each cocktail
will be served in an elongated coupe on a silver
Art Deco tray. The allure of the Sherwood
Forest is next as the woodland ingredients and
ancient myth result in drinks served in a silver
goblet with a wooden base.
The boom of the industrial revolution is
attributed to the population of Yorkshire and
Lancashire (the Pennines). The mushrooming
of the era brought forward numerous changes
as trade opened up borders around the world.
Representing the new exploration, this section
features teas and exotic ingredients, and drinks
served in an intricately cut glass in a cog design
holding garnishes.
The journey ends up north at Castle Rock,
on the peak of Scotland’s Fortress, Edinburgh
Castle. The focus is on whiskies, Scottish
legends and wild flavours. This rock glass is
served perched high on shards of slate. The
‘Coast to Coast’ journey is acknowledging and
affirming the beautiful history of the island
and its people through a sensory experience
based on native ingredients
Each cocktail has a story to tell from its
unique mix of ingredients to the heart and
passion put in by the bartenders. Perhaps it’s
the old school charm coupled with the creative
menu that leaves you intrigued at American
Bar but one thing is certain that cocktail
culture is well on it way to its heyday.
Will
Power
Everyone’s favourite Hollywood A-lister extols the virtues of goodness on
and off the screen. Will Smith provides insight into his new Netflix movie
“Bright” as well as how he handles fame.
interview by
Suzy Maloy / The interview people
Mr. Smith, you have saved the
world several times already
throughout your career. Now
you are doing it again in your new
movie “Bright”. Are some people
born to be heroes?
A good question, but I don’t really have a
good answer. Normally I don’t walk around
protecting elfs, as I do in this movie. But I
do like the idea that some people are born
to be heroes. We sure need them!
Does our world need new
superheroes?
I think so. It’s such a saturated superhero
world out there, it’s nice to throw in some
guys that think a little differently. I think
a new “twist” always makes it fun.
Is that what you need to stay
interested, to want more
movie roles and to stay in this
business?
Absolutely. Without any doubt. I don’t
want to get bored, I want to face new
challenges. That’s important for me. It
keeps my engine running.
You are known to be Mr.
Charming all the time. Never a
mean word, never a cuss word
even. Is that fake or is that the
real Will Smith?
No, that’s real. Every person has a choice
when he wakes up in the morning. You
can go through the day with a positive
attitude and you can to be constructive
and problem solving, or you can be
negative and in a bad mood. I chose the
first option. And so far, I can’t complain
too much. It’s been a pretty good
ride for me.
But it’s not like you are going
out there to get your “street
cred” up. Is it true that your
co-star Margot Robbie tried to
tattoo you?
Yes, her trailer became It became “Robbie’s
tattoo parlor”. Not everybody got a tattoo
though. I don’t have any ink on me, so I
am in my 40s, I felt it wasn’t right. I need
to ask my wife first. Getting a tattoo at my
age is like starting to do crack at 60. It just
doesn’t feel right anymore.
How do you prepare these days
for a pretty intense role?
I’ll take a week or something like that where
I don’t break character. I do it at home with
my family. They understand what I am
doing and don’t call me crazy (laughs). After
a week or so I usually got it, and then I let it
go. Then I usually get out of it.
What has changed in Hollywood
since you started your career?
We are experiencing the destruction of the
middle class in Hollywood right now. We
are dealing with that right now. It’s the
consumption, the way the next generation
consumes entertainment is very different.
I do believe those smaller films will come
back. But for now they are gone.
But movies with huge budgets are
still being produced, right?
There was a time when you spent USD100
million on a movie, you couldn’t lose.
Today they go way over the top by spending
over USD200 million. But the middle
ground is missing. I do believe they middle
ground will return.
Everybody has a crazy secret,
what’s yours?
I just realized that I don’t think I have a
crazy secret, and that’s what makes it crazy,
right? – I guess I am very generous with my
friends. My kids say to me all the time to
bring it down a little.
Your whole family is working in
entertainment. How does that
make you feel?
My wife and I never pushed our kids into
entertainment. But it’s always been around
us. Movies, TV, scripts, music. I guess it was
just a natural progression for my kids to get
into what we are doing.
Normally you play the nice guy.
But lately you have tried other
parts where you are not always
Mr. Nice Guy. Why?
That is true. It wasn’t easy in the beginning. It
does not come natural for me to do something
mean when you have the opportunity to do
something good. I think I want to do some
other stuff that is a little darker.
Does fame enhance who you are?
I think it depends on what kind of person
you are. Fame is like altitude. If you go up a
mountain there is less oxygen. Some people
can acclimate and breathe and move up
gradually. And other can’t handle it. They
can’t breathe anymore, and you start seeing
strange behavior.
But how was it for you?
I had time to acclimate. Fame came
gradually for me. The slower pace helped
me to keep breathing, and to stay normal,
basically. The kids that rise to fame today
don’t have that time of gradual fame
anymore. Due to social media they just shoot
up to fame and have to deal with it. I call it
altitude sickness that kicks in a lot faster.
Is fame pressure?
Oh, absolutely. Lots of pressure. And you
have to be able to enjoy it in this business.
Otherwise you are doomed. And by the way,
fame and money are two separate things.
There are a lot of people with money that
are not famous. The worst of it though is to
be famous and have no money. That’s just
wrong (laughs).
So, you are saying fame is difficult
to handle for people?
Fame burns everything in your life. It puts
heat on your family, on your friends, your
relationship. It’s difficult to handle at times.
People look at you, and things become more
dangerous than they were in the past.
‘I can’t complain
too much. It’s been a
pretty good ride
for me’
You have achieved so much in life,
what do you still want to achieve?
To be able to grow as an actor, you have to
try new things. That’s what I want. Every
role you play you add something to yourself.
That’s good for you personal development.
The farther away it is from you the more you
learn about the nature of men.
How do you deal with defeats?
I am fortunate, I can leave a lot out there on
the set. A while back I lost my dad, and I was
shooting a movie at the same time. In that
movie I played a guy that was really sad. I
didn’t have to play that part, I was sad, really
sad. I thought about death a lot. It’s part of
our journey
getty images
Are you afraid of getting older?
No, I am not afraid. For over 30 years I’ve
been in the center of the storm. It’s time for
others to get the attention. That’s fine. It’s
nice to reach a point in your life where you
feel a certain satisfaction for what you have
accomplished. I think I reached that point.
And it feels good.
race-cars. He’s also a man of controversy,
and perhaps one of the latest pieces he has
written to spark yet another argument is the
idea that the Honda Accord V6 Coupe is the
last real American muscle car.
In certain respects he’s correct, given
the very specific criteria he’s stated (a lot
of American cars are not produced in
America). But the rest of the world has had
a somewhat different view of what a muscle
car is or what it should be, and maybe it’s
time to clarify a few things and set the
record straight.
The formula for a muscle car, by
Baruth’s definition, is one-part family car
platform and one-part huge engine with a
tremendous amount of power. But perhaps
just as important as these two core principles
are the list of things a muscle car should not
be, simply as a matter of tradition. It is also
tradition and history that obfuscates which
cars are truly muscle cars, to begin with.
One might argue that the Ford Mustang
and the Chevrolet Camaro, two big names
and highly traditional American cars, are
both of the muscle nature. Unfortunately,
history tells us that neither of these cars
was categorised as muscle cars when they
began. For some, the term “pony car” may
be unfamiliar, but this is what both of these
cars were initially defined as when they were
launched many, many decades ago.
“Pony car” itself refers to the class of
cars created when the Ford Mustang was
introduced as a result of its popularity. That
the Chevrolet Camaro was also regarded
as a pony car is simply because it has been
the greatest and most consistent rival to the
Ford Mustang, so it’s merely a case of who
got there first. The Mustang which was in a
class of its own when it was first launched, is
a sporty and relatively compact car that was
mostly aimed at a younger crowd.
Real muscle cars of the era wouldn’t be
described as any of those things, nor were
they aimed at any particular crowd- which
further drives home the idea that neither
Mustang nor Camaro are truly muscle cars.
But what makes matters even worse is how
these cars have evolved over their numerous
generations to become the cars they are
today.
It can almost be said that both modern
Mustang and Camaro are borderline
sports cars, given the way they drive and
handle. From the way they’re designed,
both inside and out, to the level of options
and customisability; both of these cars
have become full blown sporty machines.
Unfortunately, a sports car is a little
antithetical to the muscle car form.
Muscle cars are not meant to be
particularly good at carving corners on a
Sunday morning or flying around a tight
race track. Their primary focus is powerand
a lot of it- in a relatively innocuous
family-car based body style. That’s not to say
that a muscle car cannot be made to handle
well, but this is where tradition is important
in maintaining the distinction between a
muscle car and a sports car.
THE DRIVE
So if these two American icons don’t
represent the muscle car segment, what
does? One of the cars that stand tall and
proud is the Dodge Challenger, whether you
want it in the incredibly powerful Hellcat
form or the even more ludicrous Demon
form. Dodge is not a brand that’s big in our
little corner of the world, but they are one
of the remaining American automotive
brands that dare to build a proper muscle
car in this day and age.
The Challenger is not a car that likes
corners, and in Demon form, it even comes
with tyres that make it highly difficult to
control if you try to drive it in any direction
other than dead straight ahead. That sounds
like a muscle car if we’ve ever heard of
one, and it fulfils the simple requirements
of being based on a family car (the Dodge
Charger) and having ludicrous amounts of
power. A sports car, it is not.
If any of this nit-picking makes you
upset, there’s no need to fret. There are
times when being pedantic is a lot less
important than coming to terms with
what people believe, and while it may be
factually and historically incorrect, people
derive immense amounts of joy from these
concepts. While the Mustang and the
Camaro may not be muscle cars (and never
have been, by definition), it’s alright to think
of them as they are.
Because the truth is that the automotive
world is constantly changing and evolving.
That pony car term that was mentioned
much earlier has its roots specifically in
cars that appeared (key word) sporty and
appealed to a younger crowd, and in this
day and age, the Volkswagen Golf GTI and
Mercedes-AMG A 45 would be pony cars by
that very definition. It’s a confusing world
that we live in, and to quote Shakespearethat
which we call a rose // by any other
name would smell as sweet- so call them
what you want and enjoy them while
you can.
THE VACATION
MIAMI
HEAT
Whimsical pastel, gleaming chrome, methodical structures and
resplendent neon lights invite the Art Deco lover to relish in Miami’s
South Beach District.
WORDS by Fanny Bucheli-Rotter
THE VACATION
“To best experience
the marriage of
this sometimes
contradictory, but
always aesthetic,
glamorous yet
charming building
style, take a
stroll along Miami
Beach between 5th
Street and 23rd
Street. ”
Art Deco, the architectural style
forever linked to the exuberant
savoir-vivre of the roaring 20’s,
has left its mark on countless
structures, on ocean liners,
trains, furniture, jewellery, as well as graphic
and industrial design. It is even present in
literature, in our perception of the rise and fall
of one notorious
but fictional Jay
Gatsby. Nowhere
else is Art Deco
better celebrated
than in Miami’s
famous
South Beach
neighbourhood.
According
to the American
National Register
of Historic
Buildings,
the stretch of
Miami’s South
Beach between
Ocean Drive and
Collins Avenue
hosts more than
800 Art Deco
buildings, a
concentration of
the fascinating style of this bygone era that is
unrivalled in the world today.
Historically, Art Deco had seen its
beginnings in the Exposition Internationale
des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes
in Paris in 1925. Coincidentally, a deadly
hurricane, which razed most of Miami in
September 1926, left the city in dire need of
rebuilding. A construction boom ensued, and
luckily the predominant architectural style de
rigueur in the city’s southern district was that
of fascinating pastels, bold geometric Cubism,
fine craftsmanship and rich materials that
denote Art Deco.
While the Great Gatsby was a figment of
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s imagination, early 20thcentury
celebrities like Clark Gable, Carole
Lombard and Rita Hayworth were all too real,
and regularly seen in some of Miami’s Art Deco
Historic District’s most popular nightspots.
Along South Beach today, Art Deco goes
hand in hand with archetypical, bright neon
illuminations. To best experience, the marriage
of this sometimes contradictory, but always
aesthetic, glamorous yet charming building
style, take a stroll along Miami Beach between
5th Street and 23rd Street.
You will find scores of low-rise buildings
and fabulous hotels that invite you to spend
some time to admire the outside and delight in
the inside and forget the hustle and bustle of
21st century Miami.
On Ocean
Drive, admire
The Carlyle,
one of the most
iconic Art Deco
buildings on this
stretch. The hotel
first opened in
1941 and still
features all the
enchanting
attributes of
pastel colours,
neon lights
and rigid
modernist lines
of last century’s
celebrated
architecture.
The Carlyle has
also famously
lent its front to
film settings for
Scarface, Bad Boys 2 and 1996’s Birdcage.
Further along, the Breakwater Hotel
lights up at night in bright neon blue, orange
and white like a radioactive beacon of neomodernist
design. This 1936 resort enclave
combines all the archetypical Art Deco
features of symmetric lines, towering central
piece and unapologetic penchant for luxury
and glamour.
The McAlpin, still on Ocean Drive,
is another prominent example of South
Beach’s exquisite landscape. Although not
as exuberant in its apparition as some of
its contemporaries, this pretty structure
embodies the Art Deco style in its maybe
purest form. Take note of the perfectly
symmetrical lines as well as the shades of
turquoise and pink. Observing the hotel’s
lovely facade, you will see the building’s
‘face’, consisting of three central windows and
some dividing lines, smile back at you. The
McAlpin received the Barbara Bear Capitman
Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation
in 1993.
THE VACATION
Before leaving Ocean Drive for Collins
Avenue, your eye will catch the bright
yellow façade of one of South Beach’s
smallest, yet most iconic boutique hotels, the
Leslie. Only recently refurbished, this little
jewel has been returned to its former glory
by carefully adhering to every last detail
ordered by the city’s Historic Preservation
Board. The signage typeface as well as the
building’s colour seem to have jumped
straight out of the earlier mentioned F.
Scott Fitzgerald novel, the aficionados
will be delighted. The streamlined design
showcases a well-preserved example of
Miami’s Art Deco District, and the newly
added rooftop pool invites you to sunbathe
beneath curtains gently flowing in the late
afternoon breeze.
Strolling to the very end of South Beach
proper, you will encounter the Cadillac
Hotel, notorious for having been built to
resemble a car. Some critics condemn the
Art Deco style for being modernist for
modernism’s sake. The Cadillac might not
be the most extravagant example of early
20’s century architecture, but it does sport
all the emblematic lines and structures of
its time. Its silver blue neon signage over
the driveway, however, couldn’t be more
characteristic.
Last but by no means least, do stroll by
the Webster. This 1939 former hotel has
been refurbished to host a high-end fashion
boutique. The Webster combines all the most
flamboyant yet strict elements of authentic
Art Deco. The structural division is known
as the rule of thirds, featuring three front
section units, its rigorous symmetry, the
incised façade details made of exquisite
craftsmanship and the distinctive blue and
pink hues of the neon illumination, all bear
witness to the grand epoch of pre-world
war exuberance.
Whether you choose to take up residence
in one of the many iconic Art Deco hotels
like the early stars of the silver screen
did, or party the night away on the bright
neon lit terrace of its most renowned night
spots, rest assured that South Beach’s Art
Deco Historic District will offer you an
unforgettable experience.
