At Rostherne <strong>bird</strong>s were seen in every month of the year r,rith the exception<br />

of May and November. Most records concerned single <strong>bird</strong>s but a male and<br />

female were present on a number of occasions in the period January to April<br />

and on 21/8 4 were counted. At Tatton a pair r,,rere noted on 6/3 with single<br />

females on L8/9 and 1,/10.<br />

Good numbera trere present at Tatton during the cold spe1l at the beginning<br />

of the year with 5O on 114 and 55 on 3/2, Ccunts at Rosthertle were very io*,<br />

j4O oa Z?/LL was the maximum, comparing badly with lrlOo in l-9?6 afi trBOO ia<br />

7975. SmaII numbers were also couated at Farmwood Pool, Mobbefley Lake,<br />

Tabley and Boothsmere.<br />

The graph is of annual maxima at Rostherne since 1948 and shows the decline<br />

in the wintering population from 4'OOO in the 19IOts down to only 8rO in l9??.<br />

Nevertheless the reserve continues to attract larger nurnbers than any other<br />

loca1 water, being approached only by Tatton r*,here 144 were counted on 2/L<br />

and Farmwood Pool with ]4O on l5h. Young were reared throughout the area<br />

during the long breeding season of this species, day old chicks were recorded<br />

at Tatton as early as L5/4 and as late as 8/8.
