Dorman Museum<br />

The Dorman Museum was presented to the people of Middlesbrough in 1904. It started life as a natural history<br />
museum, but over the years its collections have become more diverse and, now include social history, archaeology,<br />
ethnography, geology and the decorative arts. One of its collections is the locally produced Linthorpe Art Pottery.<br />
Manufactured between 1879 and 1889 it was widely acclaimed for its cutting edge technology, startling glazes and<br />
radical shapes. The Museum has over 1,000 pieces of Linthorpe Art Pottery that are both visually exciting and,<br />
technically fascinating. They demonstrate revolutionary Victorian ceramic processes including the earliest use of a gas<br />
fired kiln in Britain and a jet spray in the decorating process. Many were designed by Christopher Dresser and<br />
influenced by his travels. Within the museum’s collection are many examples of his work for the domestic market<br />
including, metalwork, glass, textiles, wallpaper, furniture and ephemera.<br />
