BAG DESIGN FROM LÜNEBURG 

Since 1982 Beate Sedlacek and Karl-Henning Hohmann create 

bags and accessories made of leather under their label Ackermann. 

In their manufactory in an old industrials area in Lüneburg 

an experienced and well-practiced team of employees implements 

their designs. 

“In the beginning, there is an idea: clear, long-lasting design 

combined with natural, sustainable materials and artisanal 

practices”. 

Clear shapes and a unique style make up distinct product lines. 

Focusing on the essentials is the great strength of the designs. 

Pure leather. Sustainability is not only defined using best materials 

and their sound, artisanal processing, but also by a certain 

persistence of the design. 

The choice of the material, conscientious handicraft and shaping 

that is focused on the essentials is what characterises the timeless 

design of Ackermann collections.

The leathers come from cows living in Southern Germany. The 

worldwide best leathers are manufactured from these skins. Tanning 

in Germany guarantees highest quality standards and ensure 

environmentally friendly producing due to the leading environmental 

standards. The deer leather come from Southern Germany 

and Austria. They are “chamois” tanned with a century old procedure 

and manually dyed with natural colours. 

Just recently added is cow hide leather which is tanned with a 

tanning agent obtained from olive leaves. Cowhide, all vegetal 

and future-oriented with amazing features – read more about 

“Olive leather”.

The quality of a processed leather becomes apparent after years 

of usage. A valuable, good leather gains patina, its own unique 

look and becomes even more beautiful. The user identifies with 

his bag, it is becoming an expression of his own personality.

OUR LINING 

A bag’s inside must be as durable as its 

outside. That is why we use leather as a 

lining. For this we also use the upper leather 

because only this part of the skin 

assures tear strength. 

DESIGN 

GOOD DESIGN MUST BE DURABLE 

What is a bag worth that survives 20 years but is abandoned after 

one season because it does not fit today’s fashion anymore. 

We work with the best leather and manufacture made-to-last 

bags which turn out even more beautiful after carrying them for 

years. Good leather shows patina after a while. Bags in this quality 

become individual and daily companions, which you never want 

to miss anymore. „It is our aim to create products that are natural 

and long lasting and gain personal value over time“.

OUR PRODUCTION 

Best materials put together conscientiously 

and with the strongest seams – 

our sewers produce bags from the first 

cut to the final check in our manufactory 

in Lüneburg - and assure quality. 

OUR FITTINGS 

A product is only worth as much as its 

weakest part. That is why we for example 

only use zippers from Switzerland. 

They might be more expensive 

than the others but they also run better 

and last longer – and the Swiss invented 

the zipper. 

OUR LEATHER 

The quality makes a difference. 

We only process the best leather from 

Europe. In this case completely vegetal 

with olive leaf tanned leather – see 

also Olive leather on page 25.

SOFT 

SOFTNAPPA 

So soft, such a warm touch – once you laid hands on a bag you do 

not want to give it away. And you lay hands on bags or wallets a 

lot in during your lifetime! Our soft nappa leather is tanned in Germany 

by a many times rewarded tannery. The leather is the upper 

part of the skin and is entirely dyed in a barrel. Only the best skins 

of cows from Southern Germany are adequate to produce this leather. 

It is characterised by its grain patterns and keeps its openpore, 

natural surface texture. The skin might be rugged or daintily 

grained and is always a real pleasure to hold.

DEER LEATHER 

DEER LEATHER – CHAMOIS 

Our leather from the red deer is traditionally chamois tanned in 

the last tawery in Germany. 30 years and handicraft assure best 

quality. Heavy wooden mallets driven by water power force cod 

oil mechanically into the skins. After that is leather is smoothed, 

equalised and dyed with natural colours gain for example from 

logwood and Redwood. After 12 months and about 300 steps of 

production the finest of all leather – the chamois tanned deer leather 

- is finally processed to one of our bags.

BAGS MADE OF DEER LEATHER 

The chamois tanning makes the leather resistant and at the same 

time extraordinarily light and soft – almost like velvet. Further it 

is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to tan. A real 

chamois must mature, just like a good Whiskey. The natural marks 

of the used skins outlast this procedure. Grains are authenticity 

features of the leather.

OLIVE LEAVES – NATUR’S TANNING 

Olive leaves are a valuable, hardly used resource. There are 

about one million tons of olive leaves per year in Europe. As a 

side product of the olive harvest, many farmers just burn the 

leaves on the fields and cause CO2-emissions. Researchers of the 

Leather Innovation Centre in Reutlingen, Germany succeeded 

to extract the natural tannings from the olive leaves and make 

them useful for the leather production. The outcome is a valuable 

leather which is harmless for health and environment as well as 

biodegradable. For this achievement the tanning was awarded 

with the Cradle to Cradle Gold Certificate.

“Bags for life.” That is the benchmark we set when we develop timelessly 

beautiful designs and implement them precisely, traditionally 

and artisanal in our manufactory in Lüneburg. That involves in 

our opinion to produce bags that meet the highest ecological standards 

and thus have a positive effect on the environment. With the 

olive leaf tanned leather, we take the next step in the direction and 

combine traditional handicraft with innovative materials. A longlasting 

and amazingly handy, purely vegetally tanned premium leather 

for our bags comes into from due to the extracted tannings.

leather lining. The valuable cowhide comes from “Hitoke Steers 

and Cows” near Osaka, Japan. The tannery, an old and small family 

business, is located in the region Himeji close to Kobe. Only Japanese 

are able to produce a leather that thin and fine with all these 

positive features.
