NSA: A Queer Salon / Steakhouse Live
Sat 30 Sep (7pm-late) // Sutton House, 2 & 4 Homerton High St, London E9 6JQ
► tickets/info: brown paper tickets / queersalon.bpt.me, £6-£10
A night of performance, conversation and joint bodily movement inspired by the
Salon’s of the 19th Century, as part of the Sutton House Queered programme.
SAT 30 SEP
Hotbeds of creativity and progressive ideas, Salons were inclusive public/private
spaces where ideas could be discussed and bodies could gather outside the control
of the authorities. These gatherings were often led by female hosts and held in
private bedrooms, creating safe and fertile spaces where silenced voices could be
heard and radical thoughts could be activated.
NSA is a salon for the 21st century. A chance for the queer community and its allies
to come together for dialogue, performance and pleasure in the intimate parlours,
bedrooms and basements of Hackney’s oldest domestic building. It is an invitation for
us to get together to question, think and celebrate queerness in all its forms in spaces
that have historically been off limits.
Hosted by the Salonniéres of the 21st century, Steakhouse Live, the NSA Salon will
feature performance provocations, durational works, intimate connections and
dancing, expressing defiance and pleasure in equal measure.
Steakhouse Live is a DIY platform for radical performance practices. Embracing
unpredictability and championing the unprofessional, Steakhouse Live creates space
for work that cuts across performance art, theatre, visual art, cabaret, sculpture,
dance, drag and participatory performance.
