Introduction
Welcome to the virtual exhibition Art
Nouveau - Art Renouveau! The work
reproduced here is the result of three years
of collaborative work by young people in six
countries: Bulgaria, France, Germany,
Romania, Scotland and Slovenia.
Art Nouveau was a Europe-wide art
movement at the turn of the 19th and 20th
Centuries. A century later, our students have
been inspired by Art Nouveau in their own
and each other’s countries. They have
studied this pan-European movement and
have reinterpreted it in their own way, using
modern materials and techniques as well as
rediscovering traditional arts and crafts.
During the three-year project, there have
been 290 pupil mobilities and numerous staff
meetings in our six countries. Impossible to
convey here is the creative buzz experienced
during these visits, the joy of spending time
together and the depth of friendships forged
across the continent.
We are very grateful to Erasmus+ for funding
our Art Nouveau – Art Renouveau project
and for giving so many young people the
opportunity to work and have fun together.
MOBILITY
Drawing is a skill central to the work of many
artists and designers and is a visual language
important for communication and
expression. Using Art Nouveau motifs and
designs, participants worked on their
drawing techniques and strengthened their
observational skills. The drawings were
not intended as a final product but as the
basis for further work.

Clay, a traditional Romanian material, was
used to make plates and cups which were
painted with Art Nouveau motifs, inspired by
natural elements.
MOBILITY IN SLOVENIA
Pupils studied and discussed the style and manner
first by analysing numerous drawings, pictures
and posters from the Art Nouveau period. Then
they picked a modern picture, drawing or poster,
copied it with expressive lines and then filled
blank spaces with Art Nouveau ornaments. Black
ink or felt pens were used for lines and water
colours or coloured pencils were used to add
ornaments.

MOBILITY
Pupils visited the beautiful, historical city of
Piran, situated on the Slovenian coast. They
climbed to the top of the City Walls from
where they had a beautiful view over the city.
They made pencil drawings of Piran from the
Church of St George which overlooks the
town and the Adriatic Sea.

IN SLOVENIA
MOBILITY
Pupils had to comply with health and safety
instructions when taking part in this activity.
They sterilised special sticks in a flame and
then used them to touch the bacteria of a
particular colour. They then put their
sketches under Petri dishes, so they were
able to see the pattern and make a ‘drawing’
using the sticks ‘infected’ by bacteria. Pupils
could not actually see what they were
drawing, which they found funny. Their
‘paintings’ developed day-by-day which
meant that the participants created living
works of art.

lettering with a broad tip instrument, brush or
IN GERMANY
MOBILITY
Students investigated fashion from the Art
Nouveau period to the present and
designed drawings in an Art Nouveau style.
The final outcome of the workshop was a
photo shoot in three modern (Art
Renouveau) outfits for different occasions.

MOBILITY
In the Printing Workshop, pupils reproduced
multiple copies of the drawings made during
the Drawing Workshop. Instead of using
traditional lithography techniques,
participants explored monoprinting. This
allowed pupils to cut stencils quickly or to
draw directly onto flat acrylic plates to
replicate their drawings and print multiple
copies of their images. They also explored the
use of colour. Pupils experimented with both
negative and positive reproduction of their
work.

Students were asked to observe and collect
interesting details and patterns from the
Secession era in the city (during their city
walk) - using photography and sketching.
Each student picked one motif and
transformed it into a graphic pattern, using a
computer, tried out different colour
combinations and finally prepared their
artwork for digital printing on mugs.
