FORT GRATIOT<br />
Like the City of Port Huron, <strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong> was taken from Port Huron<br />
Township and was created for the purpose of giving the north end<br />
of the county more clout in the fight over moving the county seat<br />
from St. Clair to Port Huron.<br />
In 1836 some speculators bought large tracts of land north of<br />
the fort to create the “Town of Huron”. This plan failed when the<br />
“Panic of 1837” hit the nation and a smaller area was developed<br />
into the Village of <strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong>. This became an incorporated<br />
village in January 1881.<br />
The village became the City of <strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong> in 1889 and remained<br />
so until 1893 when it merged with the City of Port Huron. The area<br />
has always been known as the “<strong>Fort</strong>”.<br />
In 1859 Grand Trunk Railway of Canada extended itself at <strong>Fort</strong><br />
<strong>Gratiot</strong> and built its line to Detroit. <strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong> became known<br />
as a railroad town. At this period, our young Thomas Edison was<br />
living on the military reservation and began his journey into history<br />
with his newspaper and experiments. Even after Tom left for<br />
“big time” his family continued to participate in the affairs of the<br />
“<strong>Fort</strong>” community. Edison’s family members are buried in Lakeside<br />
Cemetery.<br />
The village, and later the city, had its own newspaper (<strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong><br />
Sun followed by The Enterprise), its own churches (Methodist,<br />
Presbyterian, and Episcopal) as well as the Fillmore School.<br />
The larger parcel of <strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong> Township was mostly agricultural.<br />
Eventually people would identify themselves to a<br />
particular area because of a school, church, resort,<br />
or store. Thus, we had Keewahdin Beach (resort),<br />
Gardendale (school and township hall), and State<br />
Road, North River Road, Krafft Road (generally<br />
for their schools).<br />
This represents only a very small portion of the<br />
history of <strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong> Township. Today, <strong>Fort</strong><br />
<strong>Gratiot</strong> Township is by far the largest retail<br />
center in the county.<br />

boat sailing.<br />
Additional features of the park<br />
include a swing set, picnic<br />
pavilion and butterfly gardens.<br />
The park also provides access to<br />
Kettlewell Pond. Kettlewell Pond<br />
can be used for fishing, canoeing<br />
and kayaking. There is a paved<br />
bike path surrounding Kettlewell<br />
Pond that joins up with the<br />
<strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong> Green Trail and the<br />
Bridge to Bay Trail.

just off M-25 on Metcalf<br />
Rd. This 30 acre park offers<br />
breathtaking views of Lake<br />
Huron and 852 ft of lake<br />
shoreline/beach. Current<br />
facilities at the park include<br />
beach access, restrooms,<br />
picnic areas as well as a<br />
children’s playground and .85 miles of paved walking trails.<br />
<strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong> Park is open daily from 8:00am to 9:00pm from Memorial<br />
Day to Labor Day and 8:00am to 8:00pm during the winter. Life<br />
guards are not on duty, so take caution and swim at your own risk.<br />
Dogs are not allowed on the beach. Dogs are allowed in the rest of<br />
the park, but must be on a leash. Please clean up after your pet. For<br />
your convenience, pet waste stations are located throughout the park.<br />

In the summer of 2015, <strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong><br />
Township entered a contest, sponsored<br />
by Petsafe, for the opportunity to win a<br />
grant to build a dog park. The people of<br />
the community worked hard to promote<br />
the contest and to garner votes for <strong>Fort</strong><br />
<strong>Gratiot</strong>. After weeks of voting, <strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong><br />
not only became a finalist in this national<br />
contest, but won the Small Community<br />
category prize of $25,000.00.<br />
<strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong> Township matched the<br />
winnings by putting in another $25,000.<br />
Additional funds are being raised as well<br />
by the community.<br />

In 2006,<br />
several<br />
members of the booming<br />
commercial district in <strong>Fort</strong><br />
<strong>Gratiot</strong> decided that it was time to start a business association.<br />
They felt that the local businesses should join together to have a<br />
strong voice in the community, as well as provide a resource for<br />
members, camaraderie and networking. Keith Peterson (who owned<br />
Daybreak Cafe and Cheap Charlie’s along with his wife Darlene),<br />
was instrumental in forming the <strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong> <strong>Business</strong> <strong>Association</strong>,<br />
and Keith was elected the first President of the <strong>Association</strong>. He<br />
was dedicated to growing the Associaton and being involved in<br />
community and governmental issues.<br />
Keith Peterson was an avid classic car enthusiast, and wanted the <strong>Fort</strong><br />
<strong>Gratiot</strong> <strong>Business</strong> <strong>Association</strong> to host a car show for the enjoyment of<br />
the community. The first car show was held in June 2007.<br />
Sadly, in September of 2007, Keith passed away after a 5 month<br />
illness. It was a huge loss to not only his family and friends, but to the<br />
business community as well. The <strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong> <strong>Business</strong> <strong>Association</strong> felt<br />
that one small way they could honor their friend and first President,<br />
was to name the car show after him. In 2008, the <strong>Fort</strong> <strong>Gratiot</strong> <strong>Business</strong><br />
<strong>Association</strong> held the first Keith Peterson Memorial Car Show.<br />
