Contested Space

Contested Space is Art Project by Svetlana Atlavina. portrays the perils of traveling on foot, by car and particularly cycling in the streets of central London. It is inspired by cyclists’ and pedestrians’ experiences. Thus the main purpose of the multimedia installation is to draw one’s attention to the existing situation within the pool of street traffic. The name, Contested Space, reflects a social situation where every day participants of the city’s traffic compete for their personal track spaces and the shortest journey time. This booklet is a compilation of text, drafts of paintings, rejected ideas, sketchbook pages, oil and acrylic paintings.

I have a huge archive of photographs and videos from my walks in London. That database provides<br />

me with a stimulus for creating images in different types of art techniques.<br />

Somehow, I look at cycling as means of escaping from the busy life at work, having the freedom of<br />

movement, and feeling the speed. This point, others can respond by saying that this is the means to<br />

save money, to avoid public transport or fuel expenses. Yes it is, that’s why I think that interaction<br />

between pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers is part of our daily routine.<br />

If it takes about an hour for us to commute to work, then we spent about 480 hours per year, which<br />

is equivalent to 60 working days, on the streets of London.<br />
