Nana has told me that she remembers the journey being fun and exciting,
but it was probably very difficult for her father who thought more about
the hardships he was going through.
The one part of the trip that Nana told me she hated was putting on the
“union-alls” that her mother made her wear almost every day. When they
stopped for ice cream one day because Nana and her brother had been so
good, the person working inside wouldn’t serve them because they were
from Oklahoma. Nana wasn’t too happy, and since she was only four she
didn’t understand why.
They continued on their way and everyone was happy when they finally
got to California.
