Dearne Valley Weekender We often see people in the cemetery taking photos of various things, but we never imagined someone would submit them to a newspaper! The Dearne Valley Weekender published these photos taken by Ms Rajnita. We also use the Dearne Valley Weekender to promote events, ask for volunteers, and spread the good news about different projects we’re doing. Dearne FM Dearne FM is a popular local radio show, so on a Wednesday morning we phone up and let them know that we’ll be meeting that morning to volunteer. We’ve had a few people turn up to volunteer through this. BBC Radio Sheffield Another popular radio show has proven to be a success. We have been featured on Rony Robinson’s show twice, the most recent was part of Rony’s goose-chase-style challenge in which he gives out clues to the locations he will be heading and listeners have to ring up and tell them the location that matches. He spent about half an hour in Wombwell Cemetery, just by chance, and enjoyed his time chatting to the Friends.
ITV Calendar News In 2011, we applied to the People’s Millions Lottery Fund to turn the South Chapel into a Peace Garden. In order to get people to vote, ITV Calendar came in to the cemetery to record a video of us. We were shown on the 6pm news with our plea for people to vote for us. Unfortunately, we didn’t receive enough and the other team won. However, this sparked an interest with the community and beyond and they got involved to help us fundraise. Other A magazine called Mosaic featured our friends and sculptors, Kim Neath-Thompson and Rob Nicholson, who carved Cyril the squirrel. We made sure they got all the credit, and praised them both tremendously for such a detailed and beautiful work of art.
