2018 Prescott Relocation Guide The Prescott Circle Trail THE PRESCOTT CIRCLE TRAIL IS A NETWORK OF OUR BEST NON-MOTORIZED TRAILS THAT COMBINE TO MAKE A 54 MILE LOOP AROUND PRESCOTT. As its name implies, the Prescott Circle Trail is a path that makes a circle around the City of Prescott in central Arizona. This important trail already is an attraction to locals and tourists alike. When fully completed, this trail will be over fifty miles long – serendipitously, this distance meets the Eagle Scouts hiking requirement! The Prescott Circle Trail is a non-motorized trail for almost its entire route, meaning it is for hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers only. A good part of the trail is in the Prescott National Forest, but parts of it traverse City land, private land, Federal Land (BLM), and State Trust Land. It is a beautiful trail, meandering through forest, chaparral, grasslands and along lakeshores. Picturesque views abound, usually from high points along the way, but also on the lower segments of the trail by Watson and Willow Lakes. Its route is punctuated by a number of places where people can park their vehicles at various trail heads and gain access to the trail. These trail heads and directions to parking are given on later pages, where each of the nine Segments of the trail is described in detail. HISTORY The idea of creating a circle trail was first proposed by the Yavapai Trails Association back around 1990 and has taken years to come to fruition. Thanks to support from key people in the Prescott National Forest, the City of Prescott, the Yavapai Trails Association, and other organizations, forty miles of the PCT have been completed; with another ten miles or so that require the acquisition of easements. These easements are mainly across State Trust Land, and right of way negotiations are being pursued. The volunteer members of the “Over-the-Hill Gang” have been the primary builders of most new sections of the PCT. Many of the trails that became part of the PCT existed before the concept of a circle trail arose. These existing trails have been interconnected by new trails to make the final circle. YAVAPAI TRAILS ASSOCIATION YTA invites you to become a member and show your support for its work advocating for nonmotorized trails, and for providing trail information like this Guide and its maps. For YTA’s mission statement and a membership form, go to their website at yavapai-trails.org TRAIL ETIQUETTE & SAFETY Users should follow trail etiquette to make sure everyone has an enjoyable experience. • Mountain bikers give way to equestrians and hikers, while hikers give way to equestrians. • To avoid accidents, all users must be aware of their surroundings and be prepared to stop as needed to allow others to pass in either direction. This applies in particular to mountain bikers who must control their speed, especially around corners and when going downhill. • Do not litter. Consider taking a bag with you to gather trash left by inconsiderate users. • Always take water with you and make sure your equipment is in good shape. For hikers, a good pair of hiking shoes or boots is recommended. • If alone, tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. • If you find a fallen tree across the trail in the PNF, inform them of its location (a GPS reading is good for accuracy). 14 Call The Guedel Team with Realty ONE Group Mountain Desert - 928.460.4950
