Biographies and Memoirs
Marjorie Simmins was raised in Vancouver, and now divides her time between British
Columbia and Nova Scotia. She began her twenty-five year career as a free-lance journalist
in Vancouver. While her primary “beats” focused on commercial and sports fishing, she
also published numerous essays and articles in magazines and newspapers across Canada,
and in the United States. Her essay, “Trips from There to Here,” published in Saturday Night,
won a Gold Medal at the 1994 National Magazine Awards. She also won a Gold Medal at
the 2013 Atlantic Journalism Awards for the best Atlantic Magazine article. Simmins has
written for provincial and national magazines, and has been published in
newspapers and anthologies in Canada and in the United States.
About the Book
After a severe horseback riding accident in 2011, journalist and author Marjorie Simmins
finds herself unable to walk. During the slow months of recovery, Simmins replays a lifetime
of memories related to her beloved horse companions and the adventures they shared.
Finally back on her feet, she makes a bold and surprising decision: she will ride again, in
a discipline that is new for her, and she will even compete in a horse show--her first in 42
years. Vancouver-raised Simmins decides that 2014, the Chinese Year of the Horse, is her
time for a comeback. Exhilarated but nervous, the former hunter-jumper of modest ability
commits to full-time training as a Western rider.
