With clever budget allocation, a young family
made the most of their budget to achieve a kitchen
with maximum wow factor.

With sleek finishes and
a fabulous island bench,
this kitchen is set to take
the hard knocks of family
life as well as being the
centrepiece of a spacious
entertaining zone.
When Andrew and
Jayne Wellby and
daughters Frankie,
4, and Charlie, 2, moved from
Melbourne to their new home at
Burleigh Heads they were happy
with the new house except for
the kitchen. “It was ugly!” says
Jayne.
The Wellbys called in Verto
Kitchens and planned to
update the large space to create
maximum impact within their
budget. “We were smart,” says
Jayne, “and allocated the budget
of around $30,000 very carefully.
In the end, we couldn’t believe
how much wow we got for the
budget!”
Working within the existing large
space, focus was placed squarely
on a massive island bench
topped with Pietro Grey marble.
“Most of the budget went on the
island bench and sink, and the
taps were also a splurge,” says
Jayne. “The marble was quite
expensive but makes the island
bench an amazing feature that
really grounds the space. It’s the
glamour zone, while the rest of
the kitchen is the practical zone.”
One major saving was achieved
by retaining the existing Miele
appliances while another
glamour addition was an extra
large mirrored splashback
behind the stove and rangehood.
Mirrored kickboards were also
installed with a hidden run of
lights. “The lighting in the kitchen
is fantastic,” says Jayne. “When
we are entertaining at night we
just leave on the kickboard and
fan lights and the effect is lovely.”
A practical addition the Wellbys
have really come to appreciate
is the small appliance space that
holds the Kitchen Aid, toaster
and other small appliances, lots
of power points and roller doors
to hide everything out of sight
when not in use. “We also love
all the deep drawers with Blum
hardware,” says Jayne.
”
You can put a massive
amount of weight in them
and see everything at a
glance.”
“It was really amazing to see what
could be achieved within the
budget,” says Jayne. “Tim from
Verto was excellent and able
to overcome all the curve balls,
while the guys who did the work
were very skilled and lovely to
get along with.”
