Lord Street has been Southport’s most
famous landmark since the town gained
popularity as a genteel seaside resort in
Victorian times. This charming boulevard
offers an almost continental feel with
canopied shops on one side of the street
and tranquil gardens and fountains on
the other. Independent and high quality
shops nestle amongst tea rooms, cafes
and restaurants, many with outdoor
dining areas where you can sit and
watch the world go by.
Glorious period décor and a stunning
glass-domed roof make Wayfarers
Arcade a must on your list of things
to do – there are over 30 independent
shops here ranging from traditional
sweets to bridal gowns. And anyone with
an interest in antiques and collectables
should head for Royal Arcade where
they’ll be able to try to find ‘the real
deal’. Allow plenty of time though as
there are two floors to explore!

Keep on Shopping

It’s easy to see why Southport is such a
popular shopping destination – there’s
just so much to choose from!
Chapel Street is adjacent to Lord Street
and it’s here that you’ll find high street
brands and national names. The street
is pedestrianised so no need to worry
about the traffic and Cambridge Arcade,
Cambridge Walks and Marble Place are
all well worth a visit too. Just a couple
of minutes walk away from Chapel
Street is Wesley Street, home to some
of the prettiest shops in Southport and
affectionally known as ‘The Village in
the Town’.
If it’s bargains and locally sourced
produce you’re looking for then visit
Southport Indoor Market Hall on King
Street. The surrounding Market Quarter
has niche shops and both are just a
minute’s walk from Lord Street
and Chapel Street.
Why not combine a little beachcombing
with some retail therapy? Ocean Plaza is
situated on the seafront and has a great
mix of retail and leisure with a multiplex
cinema, hotel and Premier Bowl – along
with 1200 parking spaces.

With such an amazing event calendar,
there’s always something to look
forward to in Southport, so whether
it’s gardening, sport, music, aircraft or
fireworks, there’s bound to be something
of interest.
Jazz on a Winter’s Weekend gets the
year off to a great start with music from a
variety of artists performing at the Royal
Clifton Hotel on Southport’s Promenade.
The world’s most famous steeplechase
gallops into Aintree in April, so make
a date in your diary for the Crabbie’s
Grand National – three days of thrilling
horseracing… and great people-watching
too! Then in May come along to the
first-ever Southport Festival which will
celebrate fashion, arts & culture and
music (including a great line-up
of fantastic jazz).
In June give your taste-buds a treat and
bring them along to Victoria Park where
there’ll be three days of culinary heaven
on offer at the Southport Food & Drink
Festival. Live cookery demonstrations, a
food village, trade stands and children’s
entertainment… and completely free to
enter! Later in June, the Woodvale Rally
takes place in the park, with activites
taking part over two action-packed days.
Southport also marks the British Armed
Forces Day each year, honouring both
the fallen and veterans of conflict over
the years.
In August, Victoria Park plays host to
its largest event when the Southport
Flower Show takes place over four
fantastic days. There’s so much more to
the show than flowers though, with crafts,
artisan foods, books, wood-turning, bee
keeping… the list is endless so allow
plenty of time when you go!

Southport Air Show jets into the town in
September with two days of spectacular
aerial displays taking place over the miles
of golden sand on the seafront. There’s
plenty of fun on land too, with an Air
Show Village crammed with simulators,
model aircraft, military vehicles and stalls.
October has two great family events
with the British Musical Fireworks
Championship leading the way at the
beginning of the month – three evenings
of the UK’s top pyrotechnic teams thrilling
the crowds with choreographed displays
to all kinds of music.
Later in the month there’ll be all-manner
of spooky goings on when ‘Spookport’
gets into the spirit of Halloween with a
week of child friendly activities – including
a parade through the town centre! If
you’re looking for something a little more
‘grown up’ then ten days of side splitting
comedy await you at the Southport
Comedy Festival! And with the Christmas
Lights Switch-on in November and plenty
of festive fun from pantos to markets in
December there’s more than enough to
keep you entertained until the end of
the year.

Family Fun

Take a walk along the UK’s second
longest Grade ll listed Pier which has
wonderful panoramic views of the beach
and coastline. While you’re there, visit
the Pavilion which has a licensed café,
traditional ‘penny-in-the-slot’ machines
and information about the history of
Southport. Or, if you prefer to take things
a little easier, the road train runs frequent
trips from the Pier Forecourt.
Silcock’s Funland has been entertaining
visitors for many years and has a great
selection of the latest video and arcade
games – and when you’re peckish you
can treat yourself to some traditional
fish & chips followed by a delicious
ice-cream. What you’ll first see though,
is the beautifully restored 100-year-old
Carousel with its brightly coloured hobby
horses – hard for anyone to resist.
Fancy a dip? Dunes Splash World is
an all weather water park that’s open
throughout the year and maintained at
a constant temperature of 84 degrees
Fahrenheit. With raft rides, bubble spa
and flumes, the whole family can enjoy a
great time and those who prefer to stay
dry can watch from the Poolside Café.
Just across the road from Splash World,
Southport Pleasureland is a free to enter
family amusement park with a great mix
of rides and games for all the family.
For even more attractions, Ocean Plaza
is home to a Vue multi-screen cinema,
Playtown children’s play area and Premier
Bowl & Laser where you can play tenpin
bowling as well as Laser Quest – all on
Southport’s sea-front but still only a few
minutes’ walk away from the town centre.

Just a few miles outside Southport is
WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre
where you can spend a few enjoyable
hours in the peace and tranquility of an
attraction dedicated to the protection
and study of wildfowl and other wetland
creatures. There are nature trails,
birdwatching hides and in the summer
months you can take a canoe safari or
guided boat tour. One of the centre’s
most popular events though, is the
Whooper Swan feeding sessions which
take place at around 3pm every day
between November and March.
Just a couple of minutes from Martin
Mere is Windmill Animal Farm where
you can see how a working farm runs
and there is a variety of farmyard animals
including lambs, goats and pigs.
The farm also has three play areas,
a playbarn and pedal tractors – a great
way for youngsters to get around.
Not far from Southport is
Farmer Ted’s – a family
attraction with soft play zones,
café and farm animals for the
children to meet. On October
evenings though, the farm takes on a
whole new persona when Farmaggedon
takes over – it’s a very scary Halloween
experience that’s not for the faint hearted
– there’ll be lots of screaming!
For those who prefer to get some fresh
air and use pedal power, Southport has
a great cycle hire scheme operating from
both the train station and the Eco Visitor
Centre – you can pick up cycle route
maps from these points too, so that you
can plan your route in advance.

Southport lies at the north end of a
22 mile stretch of beach and sand
dunes beginning at Crosby, just north
of Liverpool. Southport’s beach is home
to the oldest iron pier in the UK and the
second longest. On a clear day you can
see as far as North Wales and the hills
and mountains of the Lake District.

Five minutes from Southport is Ainsdale
beach, the town’s main bathing beach
with RNLI lifeguards on duty during the
summer months. Miles of sand dunes
back onto the beach – great for cosy
family picnics or for games of hide
and seek.
Ten minutes from Ainsdale is Formby,
another fabulous beach. With plenty of
car parking and a backdrop of dunes and
Pinewoods it’s a lovely place for families
to spend some time. RNLI lifeguards
are also present here during the
summer holidays.
At the south end of the borough of
Sefton is Crosby Coastal Park which
has a number of scenic pathways, a
children’s play area and a marine lake.
Here, you’ll also find Crosby Lakeside
Activity Centre where you can take part
in a variety of water sports, use the gym
facilities or unwind in the Lakeside Bar &
Bistro with a drink and tasty meal.
The whole stretch of Sefton coastline,
from Crosby to Southport, is a favourite
for walkers and cyclists due to its
generally flat terrain. Why not take a look

The Great
Outdoors
The town’s array of beautiful parks and
gardens is just another reason to spend
some time in Southport. They begin in
the town centre with the gardens along
Lord Street and extend out to the historic
Botanic Gardens in Churchtown Village.
Close to the town centre are Kings
Gardens and Victoria Park. Kings
Gardens have just benefited from
a massive Heritage Lottery Fund
investment, with a new children’s play
area as well as the tastefully refurbished
Venetian Bridge. Victoria Park’s expanse
of lawns is great for ball games – and
is also home to the Southport Flower

Show and the British Musical Fireworks
Championship.
Hesketh Park is 15 minutes’ walk (or a
few minutes’ drive) from the town centre
and is the largest park in Southport as
well as being home to one of the UK’s
few remaining floral clocks. Feed the
ducks on the lake and admire the variety
of unique plants and flowers in the
restored Victorian conservatory. There’s
also a network of pathways running
through ornamental gardens, a children’s
play area, mini golf course and café.
Churchtown Village, mentioned as far
back as the Domesday Book, is home to
the Botanic Gardens. Originally opened
in 1874 these glorious Victorian gardens
are bursting with colourful floral displays.
Winding through the park is the garden’s
lake and a multitude of pathways. There’s
also a Victorian fernery, aviary, children’s
play area, gift shop and café, so there’s
plenty to see and do for the whole family.
Southport’s historic Lord Street is not only
known for its Victorian canopied shops
but also for its beautiful, landscaped
gardens. They’re home to a number of
fountains, water features and seated
areas, making it the ideal spot to relax
or have a picnic.

Southport is surrounded by beautiful
countryside, Pinewoods, sand dunes and
wetlands. These diverse natural resources
provide homes for a plethora of animals
and birds including the Red Squirrel and
the Natterjack Toad.
Close to the centre of Southport is the
Queen’s Jubilee Nature Trail – a wildlife
haven in the town and just across the
road from the Eco Visitor Centre which
is an award winning building constructed
with environmentally friendly materials.
Both Southport’s secure coach park and
park & ride service operate from the Eco
Visitor Centre too.
To the north of Southport, the sand
dunes give way to the marshes of
the Ribble Estuary, an internationally

important site for water birds in the
winter months. The Ribble Marshes
National Nature Reserve and the RSPB’s
Marshside Nature Reserve are the
gateway to the estuary and well known for
their spectacular displays of waterfowl.
To the south of the town lies the Ainsdale
& Birkdale dune system and the Ainsdale
Sand Dunes National Nature Reserve.
The dunes are the perfect habitat for
more endangered creatures including
the shy Sand Lizard and the pretty Dark
Green Fritillary Butterfly. Fronting the
dunes are Ainsdale’s popular beaches
with ample car parking adjacent to the
bathing areas.
The Sands Lake Nature Trail with its
boardwalk access is also situated nearby,
about 10 minutes south of Southport by
car and is another area of natural beauty
on the Sefton coast.
Lifeboat Road, Formby, is 15 minutes
from Southport and is where you’ll catch
sight of the endearing Red Squirrel as it
scampers through the Pinewoods. The
beaches are also home to large numbers
of wading birds during the winter months.
There is excellent car parking and the
beach is fully accessible – ideal for
families wanting to explore the area.
The National Trust site at Freshfield
adjoins this area to the north, again
with beach, dunes and you may catch a
glimpse of the Red Squirrel here too.

heritage is clearly visible across the town
centre and no more so than in Lord

Southport is a veritable Mecca for sports
lovers – world-class golf courses, superb
sailing facilities and Aintree, one of the
world’s most famous racecourses and
home of The Grand National, is close by.
Southport has a world-class reputation
amongst both international and domestic
golfers for the quality and variety of its
links courses - and it lies right at the heart
of England’s Golf Coast. There are 15
top clubs no more than an hour’s drive
from the town, six of which are less than
half an hour away – so why spend time
on the motorway when you can spend
it on the fairway. Royal Birkdale, just a
few minutes’ drive from the town centre,
has been ranked as England’s top golf
course. It has hosted The Open no fewer
than nine times and will be the venue for
the 2017 tournament. Hillside, Hesketh,
Southport & Ainsdale, Formby and
West Lancashire are all excellent courses
which are used as ‘Open’ qualifying
courses as well as hosting tournaments
in their own right. There’s plenty of

If sailing’s your thing, then Crosby
Lakeside Adventure Centre, just 25
minutes’ drive from Southport is a must
visit. It’s the perfect place to try a variety
of water sports. The Marine Lake in
Southport also hosts the annual 24 Hour
Yacht Race every September.
Aintree Racecourse is where the worldfamous
Grand National Steeplechase
takes place - just a short drive from
Southport. As well as the Grand National
Festival, Aintree also holds a number
of other race days. So whether you’re a
regular race-goer or are looking for a day
out with a difference, choose Southport

Around and
about…
Heading out of town towards Liverpool,
you will come to Birkdale Village,
less than a mile from Southport town
centre. Birkdale is home to a number
of independent shops and several bars
and restaurants many of which offer al
fresco dining, giving the village a real
continental feel.
As you continue south you will pass
Ainsdale and Formby villages, both
worth a stop-off for some refreshments.
Further along the coast is Crosby,
home to Antony Gormley’s ‘Another
Place’ installation, as well as the Crosby
Lakeside Activity Centre with its water
sports centre, children’s playground
and bistro.
At the northern edge of Southport is the
quaint, historic village of Churchtown,
mentioned as far back as the Domesday
Book. It is a designated conservation area
and a number of the village’s cottages
retain their traditional thatched roofs
as well as the village stocks that date
back to 1741. Take time out to visit the
picturesque shops as well as cosy cafes

and the two traditional pubs. There’s
also The Botanic Gardens – a charming
Victorian park with its own fernery, aviary,
lake and cafeteria as well as a children’s
play area.
A 20 minute drive from Southport is
Ormskirk, a bustling market town.
Market days are Thursday and Saturday.

discounted prices, a great restaurant –

Easy to Reach
No matter how you’re travelling, Southport is easily accessible and nearer than you think.
By car: From the south, take the M6 to exit
26, the M58 will take you to Ormskirk and
then take the A570 to Southport. From the
north, follow the A59 from Preston (exit 31
from the M6) and then follow the signs to
Southport.
For parking there are on-road pay and
display spaces around Southport as well
as a number of off-road car parks. There
is a ‘park and ride’ car park and service,
situated at the Eco Visitor Centre on The
Esplanade by Dunes Splash World plus a
seasonal service operates at Fairways (more
park and ride details are in the ‘Useful
Contacts’ section of this guide or check at
visitsouthport.com). Beach parking is also
available subject to tide times.
By train: Merseyrail operates fast and
frequent services between Hunts Cross,
Liverpool South Parkway (for Liverpool John
Lennon Airport), Liverpool City Centre and
