What We Know!<br />

* The retention literature indicates an alarming decrease in the persistence, retention, and<br />

graduation rates of African-American men on college campuses. According to Astin, Tsui, and<br />

Avalos, only 19.9% of African-American men complete a 4-year degree within in nine years<br />

(Astin, 1998).<br />

* African-American male students make up 17.5% of the elementary and secondary school<br />

systems, yet comprise 41.5% of the students labeled mentally retarded and placed in special<br />

classes (Ascher, 1991; Kunjufu, 1987 and; Wilson, 1994).<br />

* A study conducted by the Proctor and Gamble Corporation in Cincinnati, Ohio showed that<br />

86% of mentored students went on to college. Only 25% of un-mentored students enrolled<br />

in college (Proctor and Gamble Corp. 1999).<br />

* Social development for many African-American males occurs in a less than circumstantial<br />

environment that often times lacks the supportive services and attention they need.<br />

Nonprofits and other community-based programs represent micro-niches in which healthy<br />

socialization can occur (Gottlieb, 1975).<br />
