Expo 2020 will give rise to Dubai's District 2020
City within a city is designed to connect, create and inspire ideas
In less than three years, Dubai will be at the
forefront of the global economic stage as it
hosts for the first time World Expo 2020 with
unparallel vision of the future.
The first World Expo in history to be hosted in
the Middle East, Africa and South Asia
(MEASA), will create new business
opportunities for investors from more than a
hundred countries and will offer a glimpse of
what life may look like in the future millions of
visitors who will participate in the event
happening from October 20, 2020 through
April 10, 2021.
Spread over 2 million sq meters of land, Expo
2020 Dubai site boasts of the latest
innovations in technology, environment,
architecture, education, science and
healthcare and is designed to be a labyrinth for
innovators, original thinkers and pioneers,
who will shape the world's future.
With unmatched economic foresight in the
region, the UAE is heavily investing on
innovative modes of transportation such as
the world's first flying taxi and high-speed
train Hyperloop One that could bend distance
and time using new technology. All of which
and more are set to be unveiled during the
event.
The project is already creating positive growth
in many sectors, especially logistics and air
cargo.
Expansion projects and new investments are
expected to fuel growth within the UAE’s
logistics sector over the next five years,
according to a recent analysis by the Dubai
Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The positive outlook is supported by
expectations of strong growth in the country’s
air and sea freight markets. The analysis,
based on recent data from Business Monitor
International, forecasts the UAE's air freight
market to expand by a compound annual
growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8 percent over the
2017-2021 period. It also showed demand
within the country’s air freight market
increasing at a CAGR of 8.6 percent between
2012 and 2016.
Dubai International Airport handled 2.6 million
tonnes of cargo in 2016, with freight volume
growth of 3.8 percent compared to 2015, the
analysis showed, while Abu Dhabi Airport
handled nearly 800,000 tonnes of cargo
during the same year.
After Expo 2020, the site will be turned into a
city known as District 2020, designed to be a
distinct legacy of Expo 2020d which has its
theme as “Connecting Minds, Building the
Future.”
The district will include 65,000 square meters
of residential space and 135,000 square
meters of commercial space, in a location that
will be home to world-class innovation,
educational, cultural and entertainment
facilities as well as a conference and
exhibition centre.
It will facilitate modern ways of living, blending
work and recreation in an ecosystem that
fosters closer connections both physically and
digitally.
District 2020 has been carefully planned to
support the UAE's future vision by supporting
sustainable economic development, moving
towards an innovation-driven economy and
creating a business environment that directly
encourages progress within key growth
industries, the UAE government said on the
Emirates News Agency WAM.
District 2020 has been designed to be
environmentally progressive and sustainable,
reflecting the changing demands of the
modern world.
It will be home to iconic structures such as Al
Wasl Plaza, the Sustainability Pavilion, which
will live on as a Children and Science Centre,
and the falcon-shaped UAE Pavilion. They
have been designed by some of the world's
most renowned architects.
The conference and exhibition centre is also
being developed by Dubai World Trade Centre
to build on Dubai's standing as the Middle
East's premier destination for major events,
conferences and exhibitions. District 2020 will
benefit from the thousands of connections
being made as visitors from around the region,
and the world, come together to share ideas
and create opportunities.
