PARTS ALLIANCE CUSTOMERS FLYING HIGH!
CUSTOMERS
FLYING HIGH
Three lucky customers recently
won a flight in a Spitfire, thanks
to The Parts Alliance & Dingbro.
Ricardo’s Garage
(Ricardo and Ingrid Kvedas)
Q Tell us a bit about your business.
A We’re a family run business, started at Rosehearty nearly
10 years ago, before we moved to Fraserburgh where we’ve
been for 12 months. We offer all types of car repair,
including diagnostics, MoTs and tyres. Our customer base
is quite large and growing all the time.
Q What was your reaction when you won?
A Absolutely delighted and shocked to have won! My wife
Ingrid will be taking the fl ight.
Q What do you think it will be like flying over the white cliffs
of Dover in a Spitfire?
A Flying over the White Cliffs of Dover in a Spitfire - it speaks
for itself!
Q When are you going?
A Looking possibly at the end of August.
Q Why do you choose Dingbro for your steering & suspension?
A Reliability, quality, price and availability. Being a busy
garage we want to fit and forget, getting on to the next job.

PARTS ALLIANCE CUSTOMERS FLYING HIGH!
Nicola Piercy, one of the winners from
Auto Solutions Ltd, and a customer
of our CES Isle of Man branch,
tells us more …
Q Tell us a bit about your business.
A My husband and I opened our garage in 2009. We
are a strong team of eight who pride ourselves on
providing high quality work for our loyal customer
base.
We have eight ramps and offer servicing, repairs,
diagnostics and stock and fit tyres with a 3D four
wheel alignment system. I would class ourselves as a
forward thinking and innovative company and
continuously look at ways for improving our services
to our customers.
Q What was your reaction when you won?
A We were really shocked and happy! We never win
anything! But something like this, wow, what an
amazing opportunity! To fl y over the white cliffs of
Dover in a Spitfire – the iconic aircraft that played
such a major role in World War 2.
Q What do you think it will be like flying over the white
cliffs of Dover in a Spitfire?
A It’s going to be spectacular and an experience I will
never forget!
Q When are you going?
A We haven’t arranged when to go yet but will be
going as soon as work allows. Customers always
come first!
Q Why do you choose The Parts Alliance for your
steering & suspension?
A We have used them for years because of the great
quality parts and trusted brands.
Gary Cross from Holmer Green Service
Centre in Princes Risborough, and a
customer of our Allparts Wycombe branch
was also a lucky winner of a Spitfire flight.
Q Tell us a bit about your business.
A The business was set up by John Riley and Mike
Bryant in 1983 and has been a loyal customer of
Allparts since that day. Mike’s daughter Cindy runs
the garage for them as they are both semi-retired.
When the business started off they worked out of
one unit and soon expanded into taking on a second
unit and then another 10 years ago, all on the same
site. They’re a well-respected and trusted business
offering all makes MoT, service and repair. A
member of the Bosch car service network since
2004, they work to very high standards and invest
heavily in training for their staff with them attaining
ATA accreditation.
Q What was your reaction when you won?
A To say that I was overjoyed would be an
understatement! It truly is a dream come true as I
have a genuine passion in historical aviation.
Q What do you think it will be like flying over the white
cliffs of Dover in a Spitfire?
A It will be incredible and a really fantastic experience
and one that I’m very much looking forward to.
Q When are you going?
A I have registered with Red Letter Days and I am
looking to do it in September as I would like to link
it in to The Battle of Britain to make this even more
special. I feel that this will really be appropriate and
am looking to tie this in accordingly.
Q Why do you choose The Parts Alliance for your
steering & suspension?
A We’ve been using them for years and always liked
the product and support. We have a good
relationship with the Delphi rep, Neal Pegler who
comes in with Ben from Allparts from time to time
and is always very helpful.

YUASA
Trials highlight major
advantages for workshops
ahead of Yuasa ‘Always
Check The Battery’ launch
GS Yuasa Battery Sales UK Ltd has demonstrated significant
business and customer service benefits of testing every battery,
with a major workshop trial. The battery testing trial, conducted
over three summer months, revealed 27% of vehicles tested had a
battery issue, and 11% needed a complete battery replacement.
Three workshops in Lancashire, Leicestershire and Kent took
part in the trial between May and July, supplied with a Yuasa
battery analyser and asked to test the battery of every vehicle
worked on.
By monitoring the number of vehicles seen during the three
months against the test results, Yuasa demonstrated the
value of implementing a testing regime within workshops
and calculated the extra revenue brought in through battery
replacement and reconditioning services. A workshop which
sees 100 vehicles a month could expect an increase in annual
revenue of over £15,000 by implementing the initiative.
The scheme also allows workshops to improve customer
service, enhance reputation and prevent customers’ battery
failure distress. Most customers would rather find out they
need a new battery while their vehicle is in a workshop and
not when it fails to start on a cold morning.
8
“
Our trial revealed 10% of batteries needed
replacing and 26% needed recharging. Having
these test results allowed us to recommend to
customers that their battery required recharging
or replacing. We could give them warning that
they may have issues in a few months’ time.
When a customer has a vehicle serviced they
want reliability for the next year, not just right
now ”
. Garage mechanic, featured workshop.
BATTERIES
YUASA
Ian Newham, Training Manager at GS Yuasa Battery Sales
UK Ltd said: “Our trial was a huge success and demonstrated
that the average garage could increase battery revenue
alongside driving customer satisfaction and long term loyalty
by testing the battery of every vehicle they service or repair.
“Most customers expect their workshop to check and maintain
all elements of their vehicle. If the battery fails shortly after a
service or repair work, customers may question the quality of
the work carried out and the reliability of the workshop.
“Garages should be implementing the simple minute-long test
into their everyday routine. A battery may look and perform
fine but the test will identify its state of health and if it’s likely
to fail soon.”
One of the participating workshops found 38% of batteries
tested needed attention and 19% needed replacing. One
of their mechanics stated that: “The Yuasa battery testing
programme has helped us, and highlighted the need and
opportunities in offering our customers a professional health
and charge status report.
“Before you assume this is a simple sales drive, please
consider how important the battery has become, it has many
responsibilities and effects on the reliability of complex
network systems.”
Yuasa will soon launch the ‘Always Check The Battery’
workshop initiative which will provide workshops all the tools
they need to set up battery testing in a low-cost workshop
testing kit.
scheme visit your local Parts Alliance branch.
Garages to help
customers fund car
maintenance
Servicesure Autocentres can now benefit from not one but
two innovative financial solutions to help them win and
retain motorists’ business.
First there’s a new ‘Savings Plan’ that enables motorists to
set aside regular amounts to put towards the cost of car
maintenance at a later date, so there’s money ready for any
unforeseen motoring bills.
“ The Savings Plan aligns perfectly with
the Servicesure concept,
said Paul Dineen, Head of Garage Programmes
”
at The Parts Alliance.
“ It’s all about giving
garages access to the best possible
solutions to help them thrive. ”
Robert Brownlie, owner of Ace
Autocentre, said: “We have used
this five or six times already, on each
occasion we’ve secured a large repair
we otherwise would have lost, and had
delighted customers, who were able
to spread the cost of an unexpected
garage repair bill over three monthly
instalments!”
Other garages including A1 Motorist
Centre and Kinnon’s Garage have been
quick to praise “an easy system to use”
and a “really fast approval process”.
Customers can set up a simple monthly Direct Debit with
control over how much money is taken and when. The
fund is transferable between cars too.
Everyone who uses the ‘Savings Plan’ gains access to
a benefits scheme through a web portal. This offers big
potential savings through a wide range of vouchers for
high street stores, supermarkets, travel or days out as well
as domestic gas and electricity discounts.
Secondly, there’s a three-month ‘interest free credit’ solution
which garages can offer to customers at point of sale.
A simple online or telephone application assesses the
customer’s suitability with a credit check, an online Direct
Debit mandate is then completed by them when collecting
the vehicle, and funds are released to the garage within
7 working days.
There’s no set-up or monthly licence fees, instead garages
simply pay a percentage of the transactions, which can
be from £80 to £3,000 in value.
These solutions are part of a progressive overall formula
that has been working exceptionally well for The
Parts Alliance’s fast growing garage network. In May
Servicesure reported that garages had been joining at a
record rate of 15 per month during 2017 and that over
200 garages were already offering the ‘Brakes for Life’
programme which launched at the start of the year.
For more information on the full range of benefits for
garage members joining the Servicesure network, please
STEERING & SUSPENSION
SUSPENSION BUSHES
With the current state of the roads
suspension systems are being given a
harder time than ever, so when it comes
to changing bushes Polybush look to
offer you the best parts you can fit.
With over 34 years of both O.E. and aftermarket experience,
Polybush are able to offer The Parts Alliance customers access
to our full range of bushes. We also work closely with The
Parts Alliance to identify new applications that can save you
time and money.
Polybush is a cost effective, ‘fit and forget’ solution which far
outlasts the life of rubber bushes, and the good news is there
are no profit eroding tools required to fit them. As an added
extra Polybush partsare completely unaffected by oil, petrol or
road contaminants.
Polybush parts are available in vehicle kits to allow full bush
replacements or as component sets used as replacements due
to MOT failures, the choice is yours.
IDEAL SOLUTION
A common bush failure is the front wishbone rear bush on the
popular VW PQ35 platform. Polybush has the ideal solution.
Unlike the original voided rubber bush our 44M requires
no specialist tool to fit, reducing labour time from minutes to
seconds. Our 2 part, low friction bush rotates freely with no
grease required. In action, the bush lasts 4-5 times longer
whilst reducing understeer thus improving handling.
HOW DO THEY WORK?
Traditional rubber bushes degrade
over a period of time and
compression set slowly reduces the
vehicles handling and performance
and reduces the tyre life as the
suspension alignment changes.
Using high grade polyurethane
Polybush is able to offer a bush
that retains its shape again and
again.
POLYBUSH AFTER
9 MONTHS
The result - no compression set and
perfect suspension alignment.
RUBBER BUSH
AFTER 9 MONTHS
A PROFITABLE MARKET
Suspension bush replacement is a profitable
market. Polybush are easy to fit and require
no special tools, reducing labour time for the
garage whilst offering the customer the best
solution. Any slight increase in cost to the
garage or customer is far outweighed by the
long term cost saving benefits.
STEERING & SUSPENSION
SUSPENSION BUSHES
REAR BEAM BUSH
Rear beam bushes also give many garages a real challenge,
with disgruntled customers being required to replace these
bushes time and time again.
A popular choice for FWD cars across the market and with
only 2 points of attachment to the chassis the bushes act as
pivot points reacting against all the loads from the rear of the
car. The original rubber bush quickly forms a compression
set, misaligning the rear wheel geometry resulting in poor
handling as the beam is out of its optimum alignment and
grip is lost. With some O.E. manufacturers not offering
replacement bushes a new beam can be a very expensive
outlay; with Polybush you just replace the bush.
Polybush designed a voided top hat bush to reduce deflection
that has excellent vibration adsorption qualities and a natural
ability to internally damp high frequency vibration created
by rough road surfaces and potholes. The voided section of
the bush reduces noise and vibration. The bush is extremely
easy to install as it provides a lead in into the beam bore.
The result as always with Polybush - reduced labour costs,
greater longevity, improved handling and reduced tyre wear.
SCRUBBED TYRES?
The rear lower toe control arm across the VAG PQ 35 platform
is fitted with a metalastic style bush that as it wears allows
excess lateral movement which causes toe-in during braking
and cornering and toe-out during acceleration, both resulting
in tyre scrub. Polybush increased the surface area of the bush
to reduce the lateral movement. With no press required, the
easy fit, two piece bushes reduce labour time and the cost of
tyre replacement.
All Polybush parts are designed with the car in mind; from
simple top hat bushes to complex voided bushes we let the
car do the designing. Our design team work hard to ensure
that the bushes not only provide the optimum solution for the
customer they offer an easy to fit cost effective solution for the
garage.
TOWNSHEND
20

FUZZ TOWNSHEND – THE CAR SOS STAR TALKS TO US …
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
CAR SOS
Q So, Fuzz, how did you get the nickname ‘Fuzz’?
A When I was 6 or 7 at school, a couple of girls in my class
liked my fuzzy hair, so they called me Fuzzy, and it’s stayed
with me!
Q What was your first car?
A I bought a Ford Anglia at 15, but scrapped it before I could
drive, then I drove my mum’s Fiesta Mk 1, but the first car I
bought of my own to drive was a 1950’s Series 1 Land
Rover. I did also buy a double decker bus! But I didn’t drive
this, I got offered some money for it so I sold it so I could
party for the summer!
Q What’s your favourite classic car?
A I’m a big fan of 1920’s & 30’s cars like a 1930’s Lagonda,
and Austin 12s, Austin 30s. I like a car that’s about the
journey. Where you think about what you’re going to
take and even a 50 mile trip can be an adventure. I love an
adventure.
Q Do you prefer driving or fixing cars?
A I think driving, as if I’m driving I’m probably on a break
somewhere! But I do like fixing them as well. I like the puzzle
that classic cars offer; figuring out why things aren’t working.
Like with my Jensen I’m rebuilding, it starts up and ticks over
but it’s not good in the mid-rev range. Eventually I’ll find out
why and fix it.
Q What makes a car a classic?
A I think it’s having a passion for a car, especially a slightly
unreasonable passion! If you’re spending a lot of time on
looking after it and doing it up as a hobby, then essentially it’s
become a classic. Some cars are classics straight away, like
modern Alfa 4Cs or Alfa 8Cs and arguably a new Porsche
911. These sort of cars get regarded as classics much faster
than modern saloons for example.
Any car can gain classic status; they just gain it at different
rates. I think the last cars accepted as classic now were cars
like Morris Marinas or Austin Allegros. Even modern saloons
can become classics when you start to think “I don’t see
those anymore”. A lot of cars have clubs dedicated to them,
including the modern ones. There’s even a Ford Mondeo
club! These clubs are great as one day there won’t be parts
for these from main suppliers, so they’ll become a good
source of parts for doing them up.
Q Which car stands out the most of those you’ve restored?
A From Car SOS, it’s probably the AC Aceca, a supremely
light weight, precision engineered car that looks like a DB5.
I used to have a model one as a little boy but didn’t see a
real one until about 10 years ago, so it was pretty special to
restore one of those. The Austin 12/4 Clifton Tourer we
restored was special too, as it cemented my love of larger
pre-war cars.
Q What’s your favourite era of cars?
A I do like the 1920s & 30s, like I mentioned, but I also like the
1950s GTs too, hard top sports cars from that era. They’re
very rakish and fantastic designs.
Q What kind of fixes are the toughest?
A Ones where it’s hard to get the parts. If we can’t find them,
we have to make them, or adapt – for example if there are
no panels, we have to make them, it’s as simple as that. The
worst thing of all though is getting a car that someone else
has had a go at! When they’ve done it badly, you have to
unpick what they’ve done, and try to find a datum point,
where to start off from that they haven’t touched.
We probably get more people who’ve bought a car and it
looks alright, but they can’t work out what’s not quite right,
so we have to work out what’s happened. Some may have
had a big smash at some point, and there are ripples under
the body, so the doors don’t quite shut properly, that kind of
thing.
Q How did you get into car repairs?
A When I was younger I used to go up to my cousin’s house
in Linlithgow in the school holidays, and he had a garage
where I used to help out, sweeping up, making tea,
21

FUZZ TOWNSHEND – THE CAR SOS STAR TALKS TO US …
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
watching out for fires on welding jobs, that kind of thing.
Then I started my apprenticeship on the buses after
leaving school. I think my interest has always been there.
Q What gives you most satisfaction, working on a car or
playing in your band?
A Well, they’re two entirely different things. I love working
on my own car and I love playing in a band. If I’m
working on someone else’s car then I’d probably rather
be playing in the band! It’s great being in the band;
you get lovely people jumping up and down in front of
you having a good time, and free beer - it’s just a good
laugh isn’t it. We used to do gigs with bands like Placebo,
and I played Glastonbury last week with The Beat and
had a brilliant time.
Q Do you like any current bands?
A I listen to 6 Music a lot, so I’ll pick up on new stuff and
download stuff I like. To be fair there’s still so much from
the past you can always discover new bands you may
have missed, there are so many bands about. Everyone’s
made at least one interesting track at some point I think.
It’s a bit like with cars; I like some modern cars too – I
appreciate them, they’re good, but I do prefer the older
stuff.
Q In your series Car SOS, which have been your most
surprising cars?
A I think it’s got to be the Mercedes 230SL Pagoda we
did in series 5 which was the most hideously repaired
car I’ve ever seen. We had to remove the outer 8 inches
of it because it’d been so badly repaired. It had been
repaired using an arc welder. It looked like a cow had
fixed it with a knife and fork! We had to undo a huge
amount of stuff which took a couple of thousand hours.
Q And the good surprises?
A When we find something that’s been lost by someone, like
an old shopping list, a note or a coin left in a car, they all
have a little story. I like stuff like that. In general, it’s
always nice when a car starts up after many years,
or comes out of the paint shop all done up like new. It’s
transformed!
Q Have you ever considered walking away from a car in
Car SOS?
A Yes, in series 1, a Ford Anglia, I realised it wasn’t going
to be able to be done in the timescale, not safely anyway.
We gave them their car back and fixed up another Ford
Anglia for them instead. We do go out and check out a
lot of cars beforehand, and do turn down a few.
Q How do you and Tim cope with the emotions of the owners
when you reveal the restored car?
A It’s when watching it back really that it hits you. During
the experience we’re concentrating on getting the shots
and dialogue, and making sure the car is ready, so we’re
too immersed in that at the time.
Q What do you put the success of car SOS down to?
A I put it down to it not really being a car show. It’s more
about how great people can be, and how other people
can appreciate that, with a little bit about a car attached
to it. It’s mostly just about how good people can be to
each other.
Q Any other thoughts you’d like to share?
A I think it’s great that The Parts Alliance manages to keep
stock for older vehicles too. It’s great they have the
foresight to do this. It takes space and time, with
cataloguing and storage. And going forward, I’d implore
anyone in the motor industry to look to the future, try to
archive things. We just need a couple of massive hangars
full of shelves!

QUALITY VS. PRICE
ARE YOU DELIVERING
‘WATERED DOWN’ QUALITY?
The natural suction and air pulsation effect of
engine ‘breathing’ has completely deformed
the filter media saturated by moderate water
ingress into the air cleaner housing.
The filter media damage has caused most of
the abrasive contaminants previously retained
by the filter, to pass through into the engine,
resulting in a potential engine claim against the
garage that supplied and installed the defective
filter.
QUALITY
VS.
PRICE
The requirement for OE air filter elements dictate
that air filter media must meet a minimum level
of water retardancy (particularly Land Rover
Image.1 Air filter element recently
removed from a 2008 Land Rover
Defender 110 by a reputable garage.
Image.2 Mann filter with enhanced
rigidity.
applications!). To achieve this level of protection, the filter media of all MANN-FILTER air filters is impregnated with
specially formulated hydrophobic resins that repel water.
In addition, strategically positioned ‘glue lines’ (image.2) enhance the rigidity of the media pleats in defence
against adverse conditions such as excessive water ingress.
The failed air filter is offered in the UK Aftermarket at a lower price point compared to the genuine OE MANN-FILTER
C25 122 recommended for this application. The obvious lack of media resin impregnation and absence of stabilising
‘glue lines’ of the cheaper product clearly illustrates how its manufacturer or marketer is able to realise the lower price
point.
Yet another example of filter Quality vs Price and a vivid example of the consequences of recommending or
choosing the latter
SPARK PLUGS
SPARK PLUG REPLACEMENT ON
BMW N43 & N53 ENGINES
According to statistics, more than 488,000 vehicles with the N43 and N53 engines are driving on European
roads, which were fitted with the ZKBR7A-HTU NGK spark plugs as original equipment (OE).
It is likely that many UK and Ireland workshops have already had the opportunity to take a look at these
engines, either under the bonnet of a BMW 1 series or under that of a 3, 5 or 6 model.
Technically, the spark plug is a semi-surface type spark plug with three ground electrodes and a 14mm bi-hex.
To guarantee a reliable ignition, the spark plug comes with a projected spark position – the electrodes extend
far into the combustion chamber.
Also, the semi-surface design prevents the accumulation of carbon deposits which are often associated with
direct injection engines and guarantees reliable ignition by removing carbon deposits at the insulator tip even
at temperature levels below the spark plug’s self-cleaning temperature.
CORRECT TOOL SELECTION: A MUST WHEN IT COMES TO SPARK PLUG SERVICE REPLACEMENT
As with any spark plug, the ZKBR7A-HTU needs to be changed from time to time. The original equipment
(OE) identical aftermarket spark plug from NGK (stock no. 91785), replaces BMW part nos. 12120038349
and 755001102.
Unlike most engines, the spark plugs’ position in the N43 and N53 is angled in the spark plug tunnel by more
than five degrees. A look into the spark plug shaft does not reveal this special design to technicians and,
unaware of this particular construction, the mechanic might mistakenly use a standard solid bi-hex (12 point)
socket, instead of the necessary bi-hex socket with an integral articulated joint.
Due to the angled position, a conventional solid spark plug socket will not fit squarely on the spark plug. The
force required to loosen or tighten the spark plug means that the risk of spark plug damage is high. This is
because force is applied to the fragile ceramic insulator of the spark plug, which can result in hairline cracks
and breakage. Sometimes cracking cannot be seen as they are out of sight beneath the metal shell of the spark
plug. Ignition problems and an early failure of the spark plug are inevitable, resulting in costly diagnostic time.
When replacing spark plugs on the N43 and N53 engines, be sure to use a quality articulated bi-hex socket,
available from specialist tool manufacturers – and as with any spark plug, it should be used in conjunction with
a torque wrench upon installation (set to 15 – 20 Nm for this 12mm diameter thread plug).
For instructions on the installation of the plug into the N43 engine please go to the NGK UK YouTube channel
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVveRIWmTwxoTWtMQLWDnlQ where it is featured in the videos section.
Preventing
Brake Judder
Brake judder is not necessarily the most technically challenging
issue, but it can be a source of headaches for technicians, especially
since fitment issues are often at the root cause of it.
By following a few simple guidelines, brake judder can be virtually eliminated:
❶ ❸ ❹
❶ Before refitting a disc, first check
the disc’s thickness. Using a brake
micrometre measure the disc’s
thickness, 25mm from the outer
edge, at eight equidistant points
around its perimeter – never base
the measurements on any one
single spot. Compare the results
with the specification. If it’s outside
the manufacturer’s tolerances then
it cannot be serviced and must be
replaced. In general, the maximum
allowable thickness variation is around
0.013mm.
❷ Ensure that both the hub and disc
mounting faces are scrupulously clean
and free from rust scale or any other
form of dirt or grease. Use a cloth and
appropriate solvent to clean the disc,
and a soft wire brush or emery paper
for the hub.
❸ Once fitted, use a dial indicator to
check the disc’s lateral runout. The dial
indicator must be securely mounted
to a stationary, yet adjustable fixture,
for example, a control arm. Position the
dialindicator’s plunge tip about 25mm
inside the disc edge, set to zero and
rotate manually through 360°,
recording changes in runout. Whilst
tolerances will vary from make to
model, 0.05 to 0.10mm is a good target
for maximum runout limit. If runout is
out of tolerance recheck the disc
fitment onto the hub. If this is correct
remove the disc and carry out a run
out check with the DTI on the wheel
bearing/hub unit.
❹ Ensure that the caliper carrier is
clean and that the slider pins are
well lubricated, free of rust and moving
freely.
❺ Torque all wheel fasteners in the
correct pattern and at the correct
torque settings.
❻ Always bed in new brakes according
to the manufacturer’s instructions
❼ Prevent overheating the discs by
inappropriate use of the brakes. Avoid
both continuous, consecutive heavy
braking from high speed and holding
the car back with the brakes on long
steep descents - use a lower gear to
make use of engine braking instead.

Trust Delphi
for R90 Brake Discs
Delphi brake discs have been fully
compliant with R90 quality standards
for many years.
Recently introduced legislation states that brake discs fitted to
vehicles launched after November 1st 2016 must be fully compliant
with ECE R90 quality standards.
Delphi brake discs have been fully compliant with R90 quality
standards for many years so when it comes to R90, we’ve got it
covered!
“It goes without saying that each and every brake part
should perform just like the OE. After all it’s a safety critical
component,” explains Alex Ashmore, president, Delphi Product &
Service Solutions. “That’s why all Delphi parts are engineered
and validated to deliver the same levels of performance and
durability as the OE. As a leading Tier-1 OE manufacturer, this
is an approach we’ve always followed, so for us R90 really isn’t
any different.”
When it comes to providing
OE-quality brake discs – Trust Delphi.
What exactly is R90?
• ECE R90 legislation ensures
consistency and high quality
levels within aftermarket
product.
• Testing is carried out to confirm
performance is within a 15%
tolerance of the OE part.
• R90 on brake discs applies
to newly vehicles from
1st November 2016.
How will I know if discs are R90
compliant?
• An ECE R90 number specific
to part number and
manufacturer must be etched
on to the disc.
• The packaging must show the
ECE R90 number along with full
vehicle application details.
• R90 on brake discs applies to
vehicles launched from
November 1st 2016 onwards.
HEAVY DUTY SPRINGS
STEERING & SUSPENSION
HEAVY DUTY
SPRINGS
Each year, thousands of holidaymakers hook up their
caravans and trailers, taking to the open road in search
of good times and a relaxing break. With the best of
the weather behind us, many will be pondering how to
improve their vehicle handling for next season.
Typically a caravan connected to a fully-loaded car
will cause the rear of the vehicle to sit noticeably lower
than the front. This ‘sitting down’ effect puts extra stress
on the rear springs, which may result in sag (long-term
shortening) and increase the risk of premature breakage.
Additionally, because the rear springs have been severely
overloaded and are unable to return the vehicle to its
original ride height, vehicle handling will be adversely
affected unless the suspension is changed. Standard
springs are not designed to do a heavy-duty job.
To compensate for the additional load and reduce the
‘sitting down’ effect, Lesjöfors has designed a tailormade
range of heavy-duty coil springs.
Heavy-duty coil springs are 15 to 30% stronger than
standard springs, depending on the vehicle, and this
means they are able to support a heavier load without
compromising vehicle handling. Lesjöfors heavy-duty
springs are also designed to have a progressive spring
rate, meaning that resistance increases as the load
increases, allowing heavy duty springs to be used even
when the vehicle is unloaded, with minimal reductions
in ride comfort.
Heavy-duty springs also work with standard shock
absorbers, so further suspension upgrades are not
required, and most heavy-duty springs are slightly
shorter than standard springs to ensure the car does not
sit too high when unloaded.
HEAVY DUTY SPRINGS
STEERING & SUSPENSION
At the Parts Alliance we offer a
3 year warranty on all Lesjöfors
springs. Lesjöfors springs hold
the same quality as OE and can
be installed with confidence.
Given their different characteristics to standard springs,
it’s vital that heavy duty springs are fitted in axle pairs
to avoid creating a potentially dangerous imbalance.
Installing heavy-duty springs in pairs, when towing or
transporting heavy loads will secure improved vehicle
handling at the correct vehicle ride height, avoiding
potentially severe safety risks such as less responsive
steering, less secure road holding, and increased
braking distance.
All Lesjöfors heavy-duty coil springs come with a 3-year
warranty and the range covers, amongst others, the
following popular models:
Opel/Vauxhall Astra
Volkswagen Passat
Peugeot 407
ROTATING ELECTRICS
STEERING & SUSPENSION
ALTERNATOR TIP
What to check for when replacing the alternator
There is a frequently occurring issue when the original alternator is replaced by a remanufactured unit. The
charge indicator lamp stays on after the engine is started. It indicates a potential malfunction of the alternator,
and that the replacement part does not work correctly. If we test the unit on an alternator functional test bench
then it will charge perfectly showing no issue: what could be the problem?
These alternators communicate with the ECU on the vehicle via a computer terminal. If this communication
channel has a break somewhere in the chain, the car computer will indicate a potential alternator problem by
turning on the charge lamp.
Most of the problematical cases have two root causes:
❶ The ‘A’ (Sense) terminal is connected to the red wire of the
connector. This red wire can easily be broken, caused by the high
engine vibration. If this happens then the communication line will
not be continuous, and a fault indicated.
Before changing the alternator, always check that the plug connector
is in good condition with no signs of corrosion. The ‘A’ Sense
terminal plug lead must then be checked for continuity.
❷ In the market, replacement alternators are repaired by replacing
the regulator, and this can cause an issue for the installer. Some
aftermarket regulators cannot substitute the OE regulator. This is due
to the replacement regulators being incapable of matching every
small parameter of the communication protocol between the
regulator and the car computer.
PLUG 670
SIG
FR A
So, when the installer fits the unit and starts the vehicle, the car computer will
indicate a communication malfunction and it disables the alternator (no charge);
at the same time the charge lamp (battery light on dash) turns on to indicate a charging fault.
To eliminate this, during Remy’s remanufacturing process, all OE regulators are tested 100% and the infill of new regulators are from
an approved supplier that match the OE specification.
Remy prides itself on quality. To be able to continuously improve its products, all units returned as warranty are 100% analysed. From
this analysis, and the useful data collated, it can make improvements to the OE design by engineering out the product’s weaknesses.
E.g. The Ford Focus TDCi takes a 120A alternator, with an internal rectifier fitted with 35A diodes. During the alternator’s life on the
engine, these diodes are prone to overheating and in some cases burn-out resulting in a charging issue and the alternator having
to be replaced.
Remy has recognized this weakness in the OE design, and now during the remanufacturing of these alternators, has introduced a
50A diode when repairing the rectifier. This will prolong the life of the unit and increase its durability.
CHANGING T
ONE LITRE AT A TIME
Every day, the motor industry is working hard to meet the
anticipated 100% increase in global demand for transport
by 2050* while limiting the impact this will place upon
Earth’s resources and the increasing emissions.
The impact of motor oil is critical to helping the rapid
evolution of our automotive world towards its intended
goals.
Some remarkable feats of engineering have already been
achieved. Indeed, even while the number of vehicles on
the road increases year-on-year, today’s traffic consumes
an average of 35% less fuel than in 1996, while the
volume of airborne particulates has been reduced by
more than 96% in the same period.
We are now used to seeing average-sized cars with 1litre
engines thanks to the prodigious power available from
direct common rail fuel injection and turbos. These engines
feature an abundance of lighter weight components
requiring less energy to move, with an additional layer
of complexity such as exhaust after-treatment units, like
DPFs, to further reduce environmental impact.
This makes the average car engine a much more highly
stressed environment for motor oil. It’s the oil that’s
responsible for keeping all of this technology operating
reliably while managing the sort of temperatures,
pressures and rpm levels previously unseen in normal car
engines.
This has resulted in the current generation of lower high
temperature high shear (HTHS) engine oils, for use in
engines where viscosity is a critical property that relates
to the fuel economy and durability. HTHS viscosity is the
measurement of how well fully warmed engine oil flows in
critical contact areas such as the ring interface, valve-train
and gear contacts.
The drivers behind lowering HTHS viscosity are new
global governmental regulations to improve fuel economy
(FE) and lower greenhouse gases (GHG) in new vehicles.
Lower HTHS viscosity tends to improve
FE and lower GHG but higher HTHS
viscosity affords better wear protection,
so a careful balance must be found
when formulating engine oil now and
in the future.
One example of this new breed of oil
is Comma’s Eco-LLP 0W-20, designed
to deliver excellent fuel economy
performance through an improved
HTHS viscosity of 2.6 versus 3.5
stipulated in previous standards. This
generation of motor oils works wonders
for the latest highly-stressed engines but
are not backwardly compatible with
previous generation engines – which
could mean a costly failure.

45
COMMA
E WORLD
THE RANGE
“
It is all the more important for customers
to be aware of the precise grade of oil
being used. ”
To help ensure compatibility and avoid costly mistakes,
the new low HTHS oils supplied by Comma stand out
from their traditional counterparts with a unique colour
and zirconium based chemical marker to ensure the use
of the correct and authentic product.
“It’s an inspiring time to be working in the automotive
industry,” said Mike Bewsey, Sales and Marketing
Director at Comma. “There is a sense that at every level
we’re working collectively to meet the challenges posed
by rapidly increasing demand being set against the global
need to minimise envuironmental impact – and the latest
generation of motor oils are a vital link in both sides of
the process.
“As a scientific and engineering challenge it’s tremendous,
but of course real-world factors are always going to make
the difference between success and failure. That’s why,
when introducing new technology, it is all the more
important for customers to be aware of the precise
grade of oil being used.”
* According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) there are almost one
billion cars on the world’s roads and it is estimated that this will double
by 2050.

Fuelling a debate
An industry expert speaks out about the true cost of cheap
supermarket fuel
Supermarket fuels could be a false economy for motorists, according
to experts who claim cheap fuel could end up costing motorists an
extra £100 a year.
The UK fuel market is subject to strict legal standards; however
different retailers are free to introduce additives to the fuel.
It’s these so-called ‘secret concoctions’ that differentiate the quality
of fuel, with many branded filling stations claiming to offer fuel that
helps keep engines clean and improve fuel economy.
supermarkets get fuel from the same refineries as the leading
brands. “But it’s a bit like budget airlines – they get you to the
same place but with main national carriers you also get more, such
as in-flight food and entertainment.
“Fuel is similar and some people find paying for unleaded from,
say BP, over time means you get better mpg than supermarket fuel
so in essence it’s a false economy.”
