#MDXPD PRODUCT DESIGN 2016

Welcome to Middlesex University’s second Product Design magazine. It is traditional to publish a ‘catalogue’ of graduating students’ work, however we have decided, this year, to extend that idea into a full magazine highlighting a broader range of work from the students and staff; events that Product Design has been involved with; questions about Product Design in general; profiles of students and staff; advice for potential Product Design students and lots more. It’s easy in a ‘Graduation Catalogue’ to lose sight of the contextual complex within which the individual students’ work exists, and to underplay the power and impact of that complex. It’s also easy for the publication to become neutered by its over-focus. We hope that this magazine will give you a wider range of stories and information and provide a more satisfying read on the Tube! >> Griffiths, W. & Patel, A.M. 60 Second Interview
#mdxpd 60 seconds
Staff in the School of Science & Technology are actively involved in
professional practice and research. Students are presented with
opportunities and live projects to collaborate with leading practicioners.
Here is an interview with Visiting Lecturer & Designer at The Government
Digital Service Harry Trimble
“I believe the creation of the
Government Digital Service is
one of the great unsung
triumphs of the last
Parliament.”
Prime Minister David Cameron
The Government Digital
Service (GDS) is part of the
Cabinet Office. Our job is
digital transformation of
Government.
”
“
You are?
Harry Trimble. I’m a
designer at Government
Digital Service (GDS), which
built and runs public
services like GOV.UK
Why Product Design?
Because I like making
things. Design has let me
turn making things into a
career. Happens also
making things is important
too: people can take the
ideas in their heads and
the conversations they
have, make them into real
things that can be tested.
Things that can begin to
solve problems. More
making means more testing
assumptions, more problem
solving, more helping
people. That’s why product
design is for me.
What’s a standard day like
for you as a Designer?
Mostly making prototypes
with code and showing
them to people. I do this in
a team. There is no design
team at GDS. Teams are
built around problems users
have. To solve problems we
need a mix of skills:
researching users needs,
programming software,
writing plain English,
