VES Founders Award
Awarded to any individual member of the VES who has significantly contributed to the success of the VES.
Kim Lavery, VES - Visual Effects Producer
Kim Lavery, a thirty-year veteran of the industry, has experience with both production and
post-production sides of filmmaking and visual effects producing. She has been instrumental in
building out specialized visual effects boutique studios, working on films such as FRIDA, MINORITY
REPORT, CATS AND DOGS, CHARLIE'S ANGELS, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, TERMINATOR 3,
LAST SAMURAI and others. Aligning herself with the global marketplace, she worked at Weta Digital
in various producing roles on Academy Award Winning KING KONG, X-MEN 3, BRIDGE TO TERIB-
ITHIA, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, ENCHANTED, THE WATER HORSE, Walt Disney Pictures new corporate logo.
Currently, Kim is continuing to bridge the gap between New Zealand and the U.S. film and
post-production markets, as well as continuing to mix traditional art and technology, by combining
her passion with aviation, science and photography.
Her current involvements include Global Aerial & VR/AR Cinematography for all medium forms. Kim is also a member of
MOMA SF, USS Hornet, Friends of ASC, SMPTE, Planes of Fame, New England Air Museum & NZ Women in Aviation.
KIM LAVERY AND VES
Before Kim was even qualified to become a member of the Visual Effects Society (VES) she saw the relevance the society had
to offer and believed that it was her ‘duty’ to get involved and give back.
Fast-forward 20 years and Kim’s passion to contribute to the development of the VES community only grows…be it ‘by the
Bay’ (currently) or in L.A. California or across the globe as far reaching as New Zealand. Kim is sure to get involved with associated
VES Sections, as she moves and travels.
Kim ultimately became a VES Member and then Awards Committee Co-Chair with Founder & Chair Jeffrey A. Okun, VES,
along with Tim McGovern Co-Chair to craft the VES Awards Rules & Procedures in 2002, as well as contribute the awards
ceremony format and R&D of the VES Statuette, etc.
She is currently serving as an Executive Producer of the VES Awards Ceremony, as an Executive Committee Member of the
VES Bay Area Section and has an established history on the main VES Board of Directors and Executive Committee in Los
Angeles.
