Editor’s Note
This fundamental understanding, however, seems to have strayed from its mark as marketers,
overnight/online I love Asia. From the Suez Canal to the edge of the vast Pacific Ocean, home
to more than 4 billion of us, Asia is a honeycomb of treasure simply impossible to relish in
one life time. The diversity, richness and depth in its culture, landscape, sights, aroma, music
and of course the food …. The FOOD! Invasions have been orchestrated and empires grown simply
because of the Asian flavours that have attracted many from far and beyond. Asia is home to better
airports, better hospitality, better resorts… I could go on. Comparing the different cultures and I could
get in trouble.
Taking a sample of experiences from South East Asia, a couple of nibbles from China, town hopping
in India and surfing along the blue coast of paradise islands sprinkled all over, and one starts to draw
broad outlines of the beautiful Asia. Mention Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul, Bangkok & Mumbai and
one begins to add all the right curves in all the right places.
Say the word ‘shop’ and the wish list rolls out: Arts & Antiquing in Bangkok, designer clothes –
not just the big brands but the tiny boutiques too in Hong Kong, to shop in style then shop in Seoul,
shopping in Mumbai with your BFF is maddeningly fun and Singapore for everything in between. Asia
has got you covered.
The wish list for travel destinations, the mandatory fields here being style, luxurious, wow factor–
yup, Asia has got you covered there as well. Phuket’s Nai Harn, a fine luxury hotel, Keemala Phuket
embracing eco-friendly with luxury, Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui with its traditional Thai Village in
an ultra luxe twist, Amanbagh in Alwar near Jaipur in all its regal glory & tradition cuisine and Shangri-
La Singapore for the quintessential city experience. Asia’s hospitality industry is second to none.
The new Asia mantra seems to be Eat-Shop-Love-Travel and pray the cycle continues!
Soneva Fushi
The Ultimate
Maldivian Family Getaway
T
here’s nothing better than a family vacation to
reconnect with your loved ones and build deeper,
more intimate relationships – and Soneva Fushi
provides the perfect destination for a multigenerational
getaway. Hidden among the lush tropical foliage
on a private island in the Maldives, Soneva Fushi
brings modern “barefoot luxury” and elegance to the
fantastical island paradise Robinson Crusoe would have
wished he had access to.
With a “no news, no shoes” policy, guests at Soneva
Fushi can truly get away from it all the minute they step
on the speedboat to the resort. In fact, your shoes will
be stored until you leave the resort – as you won’t be
needing them.
Nestled in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve,
Soneva Fushi is home to some of the most impressive
scuba diving spots in the world – and the entire
family can get up close and personal with gorgeous
coral reefs with Soneva Fushi’s guided snorkelling
experience, complete with a family picnic on a deserted
sand bar. For those who would prefer to experience
the refreshing Indian Ocean from above the surface,
traditional dhoni sailboats can bring guests of all ages
out onto the sparkling turquoise water to spot some
dolphins.
For kids, the most exciting part of a stay at Soneva
Fushi would be the Den, the resort’s incredible island
“playground.” In the Den, children can engage in all
kinds of adventure and imaginative play – exploring
aboard a pirate ship, building in the Lego room,
trying on costumes in the dress-up area, or even just
splashing around in two private swimming pools.
Evening activities are also organised to appeal to
the resort’s smallest guests. Kids can participate in
story time, shadow puppets, and even a mocktail party
at their very own ’watering-hole’. And while the Den
is designed with children in mind, the entire family is
welcome to share the experience.
“Tropical luxury resort offers
multigenerational fun”
At night, the family can unwind
together and enjoy nature’s grace
while taking in a movie, thanks
to the al fresco Cinema Paradiso
complete with popcorn and ice
cream. Or, learn some of the secrets
of the night sky with the resort’s
astronomer, while gazing up into the
glimmering star-scape stage hosting
a billion stars, surrounded by the
ones you love.
Bicycles are provided for guests
to get around the island during their
stay, giving families the chance to
explore a bit on their own. Venturing
down the sandy jungle paths will
introduce you to some of the local
wildlife, including fruit bats and
bunnies, and take you to some of the
resort’s restaurants, spa facilities,
and even a special ice cream and
chocolate room.
Young and old alike will
appreciate the resort’s beautifully
designed, tree-house inspired villas,
each of which features a private
garden and stretch of stunning
white sand beach. Families can
stay in a spacious villa of up to nine
rooms, providing plenty of space
for grandparents, parents, and their
little ones – with all the luxuries of an
exclusive resort.
With the Ultimate Family
Getaway package that includes
complimentary return domestic
air transfers and full board for two
children under 12 years or the
Great Family Escape package that
includes seven activities for upto six
adults and 3 children, Soneva Fushi
offers a sophisticated alternative
to the traditional family reunion.
Bringing together the generations
of your family to this peaceful
and elegant resort will help make
memories that will last a lifetime.
RAVAGES TO RAVES IN
SAIGON
The city of Saigon, once synonymous with war and colonial rule, has risen
to one of Asia’s fastest growing business centres and excites guests from
all over the world in its latest incarnation––a hotspot of contemporary art.
Reverie Saigon, one of the world’s most opulent European showcases of
hotel design, has launched a private tour of the city’s emerging art scene that
has captured more than a century’s worth of history. The ‘Pearls of Saigon’
tour includes a five-course lunch at Salon Saigon. Its breathtaking architecture
provides the perfect canvas to focus on the history of Vietnam through her art––a
complex milieu of interpreting her various identities and ideologies from colonial
rule, to independence, through the ravages of war, finally leading to the sweet
serenity of peaceful artistic expression.
“The art that developed in tandem with what has unfolded in Vietnam since
the height of French colonialism is so evocative and revealing that even just
an introduction to it may well endure as the most memorable experience of a
traveller’s time in Vietnam”, General Manager Kai Speth said.
The eight-hour art extravaganza, tailor-made for you, includes the Duc Minh
private gallery featuring artists from the École Supérieure des Beaux Arts de
L’Indochine (EBAI) and a collection of other modern and post-modern works. In
the know experts Sophie Hughes and Stu Palmer, collectively, a gallery manager
and a film festival director as well as artistic collaborators lead the tour. The
lavish Salon Saigon hosts the private, five-course lunch where Vietnamese cuisine
takes centre stage, featuring live piano music and traditional Vietnamese dance.
Italian Landmark Reborn
A
stunning art deco landmark from the 1930s has been brought back to life by
artist jeweller Giampiero Bodino – and travellers can take in this one-of-akind
lifestyle experience with a personal visit.
Hidden behind a curtain of ivy along a quiet street in Milan, Villa Mozart has
been lovingly restored to its original opulence after spending decades housing bland
corporate offices. Renovations in 2013 uncovered delicate murals, traditional Italian
marble and stucco, and, with the restoration and installation of two of the villa’s
original chandeliers, Villa Mozart now reflects the modern glamour of old Milan.
The impressive surroundings are second only to Bodino’s spectacular jewellery.
While the collections share cohesive elements inspired by Italy’s romantic architecture
and history, each item is a one-of-a-kind piece that takes Bodino more than a year to
create. These beautifully-crafted artworks are lovingly displayed in the villa’s original
vitrines that, at one time, showcased silverware.
Bodino receives clients at the Villa by appointment only – making visitors feel right
at home in this charming palazzo just a few blocks away from the extravagant fashion
18 World Travel

With architectural and design elements
highlighting Cambodia’s Khmer and colonial
heritage mixed with the contemporary amenities
of a luxury resort, Phum Baitang and Shinta
Mani Angkor provide a unique opportunity for savvy travellers to
find exactly what they’re looking for.
“Phum Baitang means ‘green village’ in Khmer and this is
the exact aesthetic that has been created here at the resort,” said
Geraldine Dohogne, Concept & Interior Designer with Zannier
Hotels, Phum Baitang. “You don’t just stay at Phum Baitang, you
partake of a visceral experience that embodies all the local cultural
senses and transports you back to a true Cambodian village
atmosphere.”
This atmosphere is enhanced by the use of locally sourced
materials, thatched roofs, a natural colour palette, and plenty
of rattan, bamboo, and carved stone for most of the resort’s
architectural design. Phum Baitang pulls the aesthetic together
with local artefacts and antiques that reflect the country’s colonial
history, creating not just a resort, Dohogne said, but an experience.
According to Indra Budiman, General Manager with Shinta
Mani Hotels, the property in Angkor was designed by Bill Bensley
with inspiration from local temples – giving guests the opportunity
to embrace the Shinta Mani philosophy of “open doors, open
hearts.”
“The colonnade, prang (a tall tower-like spire), and enclosures
(the spaces between walls, with passage through the walls by
way of gopuras) are common structures in temples which are
incorporated into the hotel design,” Budiman said.
The resorts have not only incorporated Khmer tradition into
the aesthetic, they make a significant contribution to the local
economy – employing Khmer people, providing healthcare
services, supporting Cambodian hospitality training schools, and
promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable practices
among local businesses and producers.
Shinta Mani’s farming development centre, a collaboration
with the United States government’s Feed and Future Initiative
in coordination with the World Vegetable Centre and USAID,
aims to “research the best varietals of vegetables to be grown in
Cambodia’s harsh climate,” Budiman said, “and then use that
information to teach local villagers to grow their own healthy
veggies in their own home gardens.”
He added that guests at Shinta Mani’s Angkor resort have
helped the community even further through a sponsorship
program, providing hundreds of Khmer villagers with homes,
school supplies, piglets, and more than 1,400 clean water wells.
Still, these properties haven’t skimped on luxury. Traditional
cultural influences are blended with modern simplicity to provide
an exotic and sophisticated travel experience in one of the world’s
most sought-after destinations. With beautiful villas, Michelinstar
dining, custom amenities, Phum Baitang’s rejuvenating Spa
Temple, and gracious hospitality, guests can enjoy the height of
elegance – even while immersed in tradition.
“The key is to be passionate about what you are trying to
achieve,” Dohogne said. “A one-of-a-kind lifestyle experience
that brings together provocative innovative design, simplicity,
tradition, luxury and intuitive service, all while pursuing
excellence as the driving ethos.” zannierhotels.com/phumbaitang/
WHERE TO GO: BAHAMAS
There’s nothing better than a beach vacation for the ultimate in relaxation. But
there’s a lot more to the Bahamas than just soft white sand and sparkling turquoise
waters. At this island paradise, your family can enjoy nature tours, afternoons on
horseback, make friends with marine life, and explore some of the interesting sites
scattered around the island.
At the Bahamian Heritage Centre, kids can learn more about the island’s culture
while grandparents can reconnect with their own histories, browsing through some
of the centuries-old artefacts on display. Stingray City gives everyone the chance to
experience a first-hand encounter with rays – swimming, snorkelling, feeding, and
more amongst these gentle giants. Or, get active at the Lucayan National Park with
a kayak journey through an inland reef and a guided walk through the park’s caves.
WHERE TO STAY: ONE&ONLY OCEAN CLUB BAHAMAS
Inspired by the intricate gardens of Versailles, this beautiful estate has a rich
history dating back to the 1930s. Today, the European-style property offers
abundant entertainment for the whole family – diving, snorkelling, tennis, golf,
and even complimentary bicycles for a little island exploration – and One&Only’s
family package allows parents to customise the perfect multi-generational holiday.
Experience the Caribbean waters with a cruise on a luxury yacht sans the
pirates or an expedition on a deep-sea fishing charter. The resort offers half-day
to overnight trips where your family can explore the breathtaking reefs, cays, and
coves that surround the island – and, if you’re lucky, catch an amberjack or a blue
marlin. And, when you’re not off on a group adventure, the KidsOnly Club will
keep kids aged four to 12 engaged all day long.
The elegant beachfront suites, with traditional Bahamian décor that inspires
calm and relaxation, feature private patios where the family can enjoy some peace
and quiet while taking in the spectacular view. Two-bedroom luxury suites provide
all the comforts of home – steps away from a white sand beach.
WHERE TO GO: TURKEY
For an enriching experience, there’s no better place to go than Turkey. Your kids
won’t even realise how much they’re learning as you explore the fascinating
history and rich culture that can be found throughout the Turkish Mediterranean.
From the Great Theatre of Ephesus to the underground cave cities of Cappadocia,
there is plenty to discover – or, float above this spectacular landscape in a hot air
balloon.
Even with an extensive list of places to see and activities to indulge in, Turkey
is also the perfect destination for a relaxing, laid back family holiday. With plenty
of beaches, pools, and waterfalls, kids can splash to their hearts’ content, and
grandparents will love the fresh air – fragrant with a blend of wild herbs, jasmine,
and fresh citrus. Turkey is an extraordinary destination with glorious landscapes –
even the Romans were compelled to create another capital here.
WHERE TO STAY: MANDARIN ORIENTAL BODRUM
Nestled in the idyllic and private Paradise Bay, in an area known as the ‘St. Tropez
the Mandarin Oriental provides unmatched privacy – in fact, you might even miss
The resort’s babysitting services come in handy when it’s time to slip out at dusk
water taxi will get you to the upscale bars and fine dining of the nearby town of
WHERE TO GO: INDONESIA
There’s plenty of adventure and fun to be had in family friendly Indonesia with
regions like Bali, Java, Kalimantan or Riau all beautiful and all vying for attention.
Over the years, as Bali has come to life as an independent international destination
of choice, an epic family adventure here is much easier to plan. Don’t let the size
of the island on the map give any pre-set notions of limited options. The island is
diverse, and each district comes with its own flavours and energy. You’ll be able
to get your adrenaline pumping the second you land in Bali and start exploring
this incredible island. Bali Treetop Adventure Park at the Bali Botanic Garden has
age-appropriate circuits where adults and kids aged four and up can zip through
the canopies, up to 20 meters above the ground. Or, search for hidden treasure at
Pirates Bay – kids can play in tree houses and even a replica of a pirate ship while
the older generations of the family enjoy a great meal.
When you’ve had your fill of excitement, head to the Pondok Pekak Library
& Learning Centre in Ubud to learn about Balinese culture through interactive
workshops – traditional dance, song circles, gamelan playing, and more. For the
water babies, snorkelling or scuba diving in the Pemuteran Bay is a treat. Here is
a hint - there are colourful fishes playing hide n seek amongst submerged statues
inviting to be explored.
WHERE TO STAY: NIHI SUMBA ISLAND
Enjoy the Indonesian experience of a lifetime with a stay at this rugged, luxurious
resort. Customized itineraries ensure that each member of your family has fun to
their heart’s content, with activities ranging from surfing to horseback riding.
Here, you’ll learn more about the unique island culture thanks to a friendly,
welcoming, and predominantly Sumbanese staff. Bring the family on a tailored spa
safari, which takes you right through a traditional Sumbanese village where you
can meet the locals and purchase handmade crafts.
At the end of a busy day on this tropical paradise, relish the feeling of soft sand
beneath your feet as your family reconnects over dinner at the relaxed, open-air
Ombak (wave front) restaurant and bar. Then, unwind at the luxurious and familyfriendly
Mamole Tree House, which sits on stilts surrounded by ancient trees and
features an elegant yet traditional Sumbanese décor. Kids will love the villa’s
whimsical environment, while parents and grandparents will enjoy its privacy and
spacious design.
an experienced handler helps them interact with local birds of prey. It’s the perfect
opportunity for the whole family to find out more about the stunning Peloponnese
coast – and the people and creatures that call it home.
Then, breathe in the sea air aboard one of the resort’s exclusive yachts.
afternoon cruise or spend a couple of days discovering the secrets hidden beneath
the ancient sea’s sparkling waters – surrounded by understated Greek luxury.
WHERE TO GO: UNITED KINGDOM
A family vacation in the UK is certainly most enjoyable during the summer
to keep families entertained here for longer stays.
prestigious history and grandeur as inspiration, architect
Richard Martinet, artistic director Aline d’Amman, and four
Paris-based decorators attended to her transformation. A
four-year renovation unearthed the answer to an essential
landmarks like Salon Marie-Antoinette, Salon des Batailles
quaint names given to ballrooms. These are the rooms where
Rules of a traditional ryokan apply right down to taking off
infuse the air with a distinctive exotic fragrance. 84 guest
rooms on six levels help foster a surprisingly intimate
an authentic, warm experience highlighting the materials
dramatically and effortlessly. A mixture of plaster with
compressed earth sculpts the entrance to the restaurant and
is a great counterpoint to the granite feature wall. Architect
Rie Azuma leveraged natural materials which became the
inspiration for many aspects of her design for its randomness,
Mysticism at the top of the world
What could be more Nordic than Arctic Treehouse Hotel
set on a steep, natural slope? And what could be more
Scandinavian than a minimalist approach to luxury living
that provides inspiration and highlights nature’s beauty in
a way that is at once fantastic and mystical? It is said that
the units on the slope seem to wander in nature just like
the animals that call the forest their home. There is a sense
of playfulness and wonder about them. A sort of openingcurtain
feel with nature as the star of the show all around you.
And this is perhaps one of the most incredible architectural
feats––making the environment disappear in order to become
completely immersed in the setting. The simplicity of the
timber structures clad in wood and accented with natural
materials give them a part-nest, part-fort feel that speaks to
something primal in us all. Clearly not just any treehouse, this
house is sustainable, with the principal features that offset the
This Season’s
Top 40 Must Have
Luxury Style Brands
BY ANNABEL KERMAN
The beginning of a new season is always a time of revival: a
time to consider refreshing our wardrobes (and other areas
of our lives) in keeping with the latest trends. But what about
the brands that we should be considering? The current trend
for slow fashion (as opposed to fast; disposable) translates
as one that is built on longevity. A conscious loyalty to
quality brands and their development over decades or even
centuries is the definition of longevity.
Whether it’s due to their iconic status, their current style
standing, exceptional quality, or all three of these elements,
the brands we include in our ‘Top 40’ all have something
that resonates with us here at World Travel. These aren’t all
fashion, some technology brands feature, and of course,
hotel groups that we consider ‘uber’ in one way or another -
all have quality as their focus, in addition to style.
We’ve picked out key pieces from the fall collections of each
brand, and aligned them with four trends that are set to be
big news for the season for both men and women. These
items range from blow out one of a kind diamond jewellery
and watches to relatively pocket money-esque pieces. But in
keeping with their brand, all deserve the luxury tag. So take
note of the products, and equally as important the brands
that you should consider this season. They’re worth it.
Fashion’s current love is
to pull from tradition and heritage,
and there was a wealth of global
message of cultural inclusion. Russian
“To be fit mentally and physically is
a journey of simple choices you make
every day.” Modu Seye, Casa Fryzer’s
wellness director and fitness guru
Plush wellness camps and retreats were a top trend
last year, but the celebrity traveller requires a
higher level of privacy and security that only a
private villa can offer. Casa Fryzer, Cabo San
Lucas, truly understands how to satisfy this demanding
clientele and provides them outstanding levels of
activities and amenities.
The idea is to give people in front of the camera, or
in the public eye, the kind of freedom and solitude they
crave in order to let their hair down and relax privately
with staff to oversee security, cuisine, wellness and
adventure.
Casa Fryzer calls this Stealth Wealth Health, ultraluxury
experiential travel. Their philosophy focuses on
the confidential, private personalisation of every detail
within an exquisite environment that consists of the best
in design and world-class cuisine.
It all begins when guests are picked up in Mercedes
vans at the public or private airport, and welcomed with
refreshing drinks and cool towels on a relaxing, short
drive to Casa Fryzer––under cover of night if needs be.
The desired lifestyle might be simple, but the amenities
are lavish at the 743-square-meter hilltop estate. Casa
Fryzer houses exquisite furnishings, artwork, state-of-the
art electronics and technology, a knowledgeable staff,
and offers outstanding personalised cuisine with security
details that specialise in Paparazzi avoidance. Luxury
interiors pay great attention to detail. Extravagant
amenities include a captain and first mate to sail the 16 m
custom Harley yacht The Adios wherever you wish. For
years now, celebrities, most recently Mariah Carey, and
other VIPs have chosen Casa Fryzer for its remarkable
location and personal wellness retreat program.
The Wellness Director and fitness guru at Casa Fryzer,
Modu Seye, focuses on a holistic program that revolves
around the body, mind, and soul. He believes the journey
to mental and physical fitness depends on the simple
choices you make every day. The cuisine here also plays
a significant role on the path to wellness. Chef Miguel
Leon, formerly of Pujol - a Michelin-starred restaurant in
Mexico City, prepares delicacies that are also a feast for
the eyes.
Current trends in celebrity wellness at Casa Fryzer
include: Flexibility Movements - a combination of Yoga
and Pilates, and Karma Fit - functional yoga. Upon
returning home, Modu continues guiding guests online
to keep a strong focus on their new wellness goals,
“Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how you look, if you don’t
feel good inside. Inner and outer beauty complement
each other.” exclusivehomerentalcabo.com
ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN BILL BENSLEY
World Travel Magazine speaks to
Bill Bensley,
the Steven Spielberg of Exotic Luxury Travel where
adventure & whimsy meet world-class design.
62 World Travel

“First impressions
are everything”
Bill Bensley
This Page, from top, the dramatic Four
Seasons Chiang Mai pool; Bill Bensley treats
work like a full-time hobby Opposite, shoehorning
JW Marriott Phu Quoc into a 150+
year-old university named Lamarck
How did a boy from the O.C. (Orange
County, California) create a worldrenowned
business in Asia and become
The King of Luxury, Exotic Travel?
Easy. He followed his heart.
While most of his friends were
grabbing a surf board in search of tasty
waves, Bill was more interested in
making some of his own. Travelling to all
corners of Asia from the 80s on infused
and informed his sense of exoticism. Bill
said that the design of hotels are akin to
making movies––complete with script,
scenery, props and cast. He walked us
through the drama of arrival at the highly
acclaimed, much anticipated Shinta Mani
Wild.
“Shinta Mani Wild is the doorstep
to 800,000 square kilometres of the
wilderness of Cambodia’s oldest parks––
Kirirom Bokor and Cardamon. I have
written the script for the guest arrival to
start with a bang, in that the guest will
wind their way through a narrow jungle
path on the back of an ATV, climb a tree,
strap into a zip line and whiz across
400 metres of forest, and a magnificent
waterfall...twice!”
Sounds like a scene straight out of
Raiders of the Lost Ark! You had me at
zip line. Move over Spielberg. Why not
zip through waterfalls twice?
When asked about the adventure of
acquiring the land for Shinta Mani Wild,
Bill shared that the whole deal was a bit
of a fluke. His partner’s father mentioned
off-handedly that the concession within
the national parks was due to go to
auction about ten years ago. They won
the auction, thinking themselves lucky at
the time.
In a moment of reflection, he shared,
“I often think we bit off more than we
can chew as the task at hand, controlling
rampant logging and illegal wildlife
trade, is exhausting.”
The lure of celebrity helped to define
the experience that will be Shinta Mani
Wild. Bill has said that he hoped guests
would have the feeling of what it would
have been like to be on a luxury safari
in the jungles of Cambodia with Jackie
O. When asked to share what that idea
means to him, Bill explained that Jackie
O visited during a time of peace, adding
it was perhaps the zenith of recent
Cambodian history.
“It was a time when few people visited
Cambodia, but those that did were
treated like royalty. This is how we will
treat our guests.”
Where fantasy
transcends reality
at St. Regis Bali; InterContinental Danang;
Opposite, The Siam Bangkok Bar
Bill’s accolades run the gamut from
King of Exotic Luxury Resorts to one of
the 100 most creative people in the world.
When we asked Bill to share his current
favourite exotic and creative example
of wonder and fun, he didn’t miss a beat
touting the wacky idea of shoe-horning
a JW Marriott Beach Resort into a 150+
year-old university named Lamarck.
The property, known as JW Marriott
Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, has a Vietnamese
soul with the passion of the university’s
namesake French naturalist. The
design holds hands with history and
sustainability, full of Bill’s signature
myth and whimsy. Qualities that speak
to his penchant of treating work like
a full-time hobby. When asked where
this philosophy of work began he said,
“Gardening.”
This playful, inspirational outlook on
his life’s work was fostered by many
mentors over the years. Bill shared how
lucky he was to have had Lek Bunnag, a
classmate at Harvard as his architectural
mentor, Jeffrey Wilkes as his interior
design mentor, and now Jason Friedman
as his hotel business mentor. In Bill’s
enthusiastic fashion he rattled off many
more, a who’s who in the of world art,
architecture, and horticulture.
“I admire and have been inspired by
a whole host of good folks including
Geoffrey Bawa, Isamu Noguchi, Diego
Rivera, Goetz Hagmuller, Jaya Ibraham,
Made Widjaya, Anouska Hempel, but
most importantly my spiritual mentor and
my partner in life; Jirachai Rengthong.”
Wondering about the ultimate
compliment someone could pay, Bill said
he’s gotten one a lot that he enjoys. It
happens when he’s visiting projects like
The Siam in Bangkok or JW Marriott
Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, both new and
built in a period style. Guests frequently
ask, “Wow, how long did it take you to
renovate this project!”
The ultimate compliment for a man
who likes fantasy to transcend reality.
This had us curious about what a creative
mind like Bill’s enjoys in his downtime.
When asked about his current read, he
mentioned several books. Recently, while
fly fishing in Mongolia, he finished The
Alchemist and shared that he felt it was
everything everyone said it would be.
He’s currently halfway through First
They Killed my Father by Loung Ung,
about the Cambodian atrocities. Next on
deck will be The Refugees by Viet Thanh
Nguyen, a Pulitzer Prize winner.
Boundless creativity, energy and
whimsy have been great companions on
this wild, unscripted ride of The King of
Exotic Luxury travel. We look forward to
his next adventure.
No two words capture the essence of Mumbai
new glass-and-chrome suburban facades, the city has a lot
Eat street
Mumbai’s eclectic dining scene has been burgeoning
over the past few years and has positively hit turbospeed
in 2017. The city’s first Brazilian restaurant,
Boteco in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) opened doors
recently with potent caipirinhas, delectable coxinhas
(chicken stuffed in dough & golden fried to perfection),
and assorted grilled meats on offer. BKC is also home
to Hello Guppy, a brightly coloured casual Japanese
restaurant where the walls are plastered with retro anime
pop art and the sushi, ramen, and donburi are some of
the best in the city. Practically next-door, celebrated
ex-Taj chef has opened the eponymous Hemant Oberoi
Restaurant serving up modern European with a touch of
Japanese and Latin American influences. If you prefer to
Some standout new watering holes have opened up in
Lower Parel’s Kamala Mills is bursting at the seams
is Kode, with its massive centrepiece of a bar where each
Culture vulture
Mumbai’s art scene got a new addition recently with
the Rukshaan Art Gallery opening doors in the art and
culture precinct of Kala Ghoda. The gallery presents the
novel concept of ‘undated’ shows where the artists will
be showcased for several months while its minimalistic
décor allows the art to shine through. Further north, an
old mill warehouse in Mahalaxmi has been repurposed
into The G5A Foundation of Contemporary
Culture with a rotating calendar of music and theatre
performances, documentary screenings, and discussions.
Suburban Andheri gets a new live music venue, The
FANTASY ISLAND
Simon N. Ostheimer discovers how Samui has become Asia’s destination of choice
SAMUI IS THE BOUTIQUE ISLAND OF CHOICE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
Unlike most airports, landing in Koh Samui
is an experience in itself. Flying high above the clouds,
you slowly descend through the mist, catching glimpses
of green mountains ringed by rocky shores and sandy
beaches. As you spy the odd fishing boat and sailing
yacht, you pass low over a patchwork of houses and
pool villas, before finally coming to a stop – but the
fun doesn’t end there. After walking down a movable
staircase, you board what must be the cutest airport
‘buses’ in existence. A fleet of colourful trolley cars
transport you to an open-air terminal that welcomes
you to the tropics: huge tree trunk-shaped pillars hold
up a vast wooden roof, as you casually walk through
immigration and baggage claim.
It may all seem rather nonchalant, but this relaxed
sense of arrival is part of the reason that Samui is rapidly
becoming the boutique island of choice in Southeast Asia
– as soon as you land, you feel warmly welcomed. Of
course, there are other factors at play as well: an emerging
upmarket dining scene, chic cocktail bars, amazing diving
and snorkelling, and – perhaps most importantly – a raft
of luxury hotels to cater to visitors’ every need, including
the likes of the Four Seasons, InterContinental, Samujana,
W and Vana Belle.
FEATURE ASIAN HOTSPOTS ~ KOH SAMUI
A HIDDEN STONE PATH LEADS YOU INTO A MAGICAL MINI-VALLEY
90 World Travel

Opened a decade ago, the Four Seasons Resort Koh
Samui, to give it its proper name, occupies a small headland
on the northwest corner of the island. Designed by iconic
Bangkok-based hotel designer Bill Bensley, the all-pool villa
property has taken the idea of a traditional Thai village –
thatched roofs, plentiful vegetation, use of indoor-outdoor
areas – and given it an ultra-luxe twist. Interestingly, the resort
was built on the site of a former coconut plantation (Samui is
said to grow the best coconuts in Thailand), with more than
800 of the trees being retained after construction. I was once
fortunate to stay here on a ‘babymoon’ with my pregnant wife,
and the two night stay has remained long in the mind.
Over lazy days, we wandered down to the beach (well
actually, the excellent golf cart chauffeur service gave us a
ride), hung out in the pool, and enjoyed a breakfast of fresh
chocolate croissants, hand served by the pastry chef. We hear
that their Sunday brunch is equally as amazing, held atop a
palm-tree clad hill in their Koh Thai Kitchen. However, what
we can vouch for is the rather amazing spa, accessed by a
hidden stone path, that leads you into a magical mini-valley
that is rather aptly called: The Secret Garden Spa. Here, you
savour treatments such as the ‘Earth Energy Four Hands’, a
rhythmic massage performed by two therapists using crystals,
or the soothing ‘Siam Lovers’ couples ritual.
With its lush landscape and hilly interior, it’s no
surprise that many of Samui’s high-end hotels can claim
to have the best views on the island, through those at the
InterContinental Samui Baan Taling Ngam Resort have to
be a contender. You arrive at the InterCon, as its guests fondly
call it, via a steep, twisty road that emerges at the back of the
lobby. As the bellboy fetches your luggage, you’re ushered
into a vast lobby filled with ornate, traditional furnishings. But
those aren’t what catch the eye – that would be the floor-toceiling
views of the endless blue ocean, only interrupted by
small green outcrops, and the wake of passing boats. However,
if you can manage to tear yourself away from the view, the
resort’s Amber restaurant holds one of the best cooking classes
in Samui. Running from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, it’s
one of the most pleasurable ways to understand Thai culture.
You begin with a shopping trip to the lively local market,
where the hotel chef introduces some of the distinctive
vegetables, fruits and spices that make up the menu of the
– often quite spicy – southern Thai cuisine, followed by a
stop at the fish market, full of local seafood such as lobster,
barracuda, and crab. Pay close attention to the tutorials, as
you’ll need to pick up your own ingredients for the cooking
lesson back at the InterCon, where you’re taught to make
classic Thai favourites such as Pad Thai and Tom Yum Goong.
Clockwise from top left, the stars come out over Samujana; one
BOBBLING ON THE OCEAN WAVES
AS THE SKY TURNS TO ORANGE
Lunch is served!
Back on the north shore is a relative newcomer to the island,
the W Retreat Koh Samui. With the hip, brightly coloured
vibe that has come to define the brand, a giant ‘W’ marks the
spot on the beach that faces out to the neighbouring party
island of Koh Phangan. That lively spirit continues up the
hillside to the 74 private pool villas, and the resort’s six bars
and restaurants. However, the most famous has to be Woo
Bar, where a series of sunken lounges, lined by neon green
cushions, dot a clear infinity pool that blends into the Gulf of
Thailand. While open all day long, in the evening it becomes
a destination for the young and cool from all across the island,
drawn by daily drinks specials, live DJs – check out the classic
funk and disco played on Tuesday nights – and, of course, the
sunsets. If that’s not enough, they also hold monthly events,
including pool parties with names like ‘Wild Wild Wet’,
international DJ sets, such as the Back Stage Festival, and
Monday movie nights.
Of course, a trip to Samui wouldn’t be complete without
getting out on the water, and they don’t come much more
luxuriously appointed than the Kindred Spirit. Part of
Samujana, a group of 27 luxury residences on the island’s
northeast coast that are available to book (or buy, if you decide
you never want to leave, a distinct likelihood) this is one of
the grandest boats to sail in the island’s waters: a fully kitted
out 13-metre long catamaran, including three staterooms, airconditioning,
and a full kitchen. Depending on your schedule,
they run half day and full day cruises, that can include sailing
to the remarkable Ang Thong Marine Park – Thailand’s most
visited marine park consists of 42 uninhabited islands covering
some 100 square kilometres – for a day of fun snorkelling,
cruising over to Koh Phangan for lunch on the beach, or
exploring around Samui, searching for secret coves.
The boat comfortably accommodates up to 15 guests,
though you might want to pare down that number for their
signature sunset cruise, which only allows a maximum of ten.
If you do plump for their evening sail – and we recommend
you do – you may find yourself bobbling on the ocean waves,
enjoying good company, the breeze gently blowing past,
champagne in hand, as the sky turns from blue to purple to
orange. On evenings like this, it’s all-too-easy to forget that
there’s another world beyond this – Asia’s fantasy island.
PHUKET
EAT, DRINK, DO AND STAY IN THE LATEST NEW PLACES
IN PARADISE
BY NORMANDY MADDEN
Once a backpacker haven with dazzling beaches and
cheap food, Phuket has been a fixture on Asia’s tourist trail for
decades. Today, its many high-end villas and luxury hotels are
attracting new travellers in search of fine food, great cocktails and
new experiences. Here’s a look at what’s new for visitors to Phuket.
EAT
An eccentric newcomer to Phuket’s restaurant scene is HOME
Kitchen, Bar & Bed, just north of Patong in a hangar-sized space
cleverly renovated by the new owners, the Underwood family, into
an intimate restaurant with waterfront views, warm lighting, cosy
couches and quirky home fixtures. HOME doubles as an art space
with an upstairs gallery featuring local artists, while dishing up
international cuisine like Wagyu steaks, chocolate lava cake and
signature cocktails. Go on Tuesday evening to dine at the chef’s
table with a set menu under 1,000 baht. If you appreciate their decor,
check out the Underwood’s design studio located near IKEA in the
centre of the island.
Couples seeking a more romantic night should try Benny’s
American Bar & Grill, located on a quiet road between Surin and
Bangtao near the luxurious Amanpuri resort. This hotspot serving
up excellent cocktails, ribs and other casual fare was founded by
longtime Phuket resident Benedikt De Bellis, an Italian who earned
his chops among Phuket expats by managing established icons like
Catch Beach Club and Siam Supper Club.
Need lighter fare after a big night out? Atsumi Raw Cafe
in Rawai has gained fame among vegetarians for dishes like
Cauliflower Mint Cous Cous, Indonesian Gado Gado Wrap and Thai
Coconut Wrapped Dumplings, plus an amazing selection of juices
and smoothies that cleanse, energise and boost immunity.
DRINK
Phuket’s party animals were delighted when Twinpalms recently
reopened Catch on Bangtao beach. Phuket’s first beach club to bring
glamour to late-night dining and drinking, the original location was
shuttered last year as part of a government clean-up that closed all
businesses on Surin beach. Don’t worry, the new location is just as
good as the original, combining great service, food and music until
early morning hours at a stunning beachside location.
Budding mixologists will enjoy the Chalong Bay Rum Distillery,
which produces original handcrafted rum using sustainable
production that binds the traditional French art of distillation with
the rich sugarcane heritage of Thailand. Using a traditional copper
still imported from France and a centuries-old distillation process,
Chalong Bay’s innovative craftsmanship has produced an award-
DO
The Phuket Elephant Sanctuary bordering the Khao Phra Thaeo
National Park is pioneering ethical elephant tourism by offering
a retirement home for sick, injured, and old elephants who have
worked an exhausting life in the logging and tourism industries. You
can feed, walk with, and observe these beautiful mammals as they
roam freely, socialise and bathe naturally in fresh water lagoons
— a great way to entertain kids while also educating them about
ethical tourism and animal cruelty issues. Open less than a year, the
sanctuary has already hosted celebrities like Coldplay, Leonardo
DiCaprio and Britney Spears. Afterwards, be sure to check out the
The Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Project just five kilometres up
the road, which rescues local gibbons that were caged as pets or
If that sounds too ambitious, Phuket now offers a range of yoga
studios like Yoga Republic near Bangtao which offers packages
ranging from 260 to 460 baht per class, depending on how long
you’re staying.
STAY
The Nai Harn, one of Phuket’s finest luxury hotels, opened last
year following an extensive 18-month renovation. Dating back
to 1986, the property was first as a Mandarin Oriental, then a Le
Royal Méridien and finally, the Royal Phuket Yacht Club. The
Nai Harn sets a new bar for luxury, proven by its status as the only
hotel on the island accepted as a member of The Leading Hotels of
the World. All rooms and suites offer private balconies and views
overlooking stunning Nai Harn beach and bay.
If you seek serenity more than sea views, another newcomer
worth trying is Keemala, a five-star eco-friendly resort nestled
in the mountains behind Kamala beach. Forgoing the anonymous
nature of major hotel chains, Keemala embraces Thai culture,
philosophy and materials, all richly brought to life through
distinctive design and customized experiences. Keemala’s pool
villas are decorated using recycled and sustainable materials, for
instance, the restaurant’s ingredients are sourced from the hotel’s
organic garden and the hotel has a strict no-plastics policy for the
hotel and spa. Clever landscaping assistance is provided by rescued
buffalos which graze around the premises.
SHOP
World-famous Thai silk brand Jim Thompson offers stylish bags
at stores around the island including two in the Laguna Phuket
resort complex’s Canal Village. There are a few high-end boutiques
and art galleries worth checking out at Allan Zeman’s tiny mall in
Surin, The Plaza. Antique & art gallery hopping across the island
has its charms as well, with quirky finds and discovering abstract
and mainstream paintings a satisfying pursuit. The mass market
shopping malls like Jungceylon and Central pull the crowds in
during peak afternoon head.
The newcomer to Phuket’s shopping scene is Boat Avenue
Street Mall, an upscale outdoor mall near entrance of the Laguna.
Boutiques such as Zen Sisters, Dalaya, La Lita and Marie France
Van Damme showcase local and international designers offering
evening gowns, Italian shoes, jewellery and swimsuits.
The mall also has several high-end home decoration stores,
notably Quattro Design’s 900-square meter flagship store, as well as
shops selling food and wine, spa services and small cafes and food
trucks. The mall is anchored at the lake end by The Cut, Phuket’s
newest grillhouse with its own pool to keep the kids entertained
while parents enjoy great steaks and cocktails.
THE HOTTEST PLACE TO WAKE UP REFRESHED IS THE CITY’S
FIRST URBAN RESORT
T hanks to its vibrant pace, there are always elements of
new or fabulous to experience and discover in Hong Kong. At
the moment this includes hidden intrigue, progressive culinary
talents, and a changing neighbourhood landscape.
Stay on the Bay
The hottest place to wake up refreshed is the city’s first urban
resort, Kerry Hotel (opened late April). Situated at Hung
Hom Bay, it offers arguably the best hotel harbour views, with
stunning vistas of north to central Hong Kong. The immediate
sensation (and the lasting impression) upon entering this fivestar
property is the luxury of space, and the privacy of nature.
The stylish and fluid design by Andre Fu creates a true luxury
resort ambience. This is particularly true in the many al fresco
that naturally invokes a deep sense of relaxation. Its bar,
are inspired by tradition while presenting delicious dishes
in a completely new, modern, reinvented, at times playful,
thoughtful, inspired way. For example, the scallop “rice roll”
inspired by cheung fun is made purely from scallop. Other
standouts include comforting pan fried pig’s brain with
burnt pear juice, and succulent slow-cooked chicken that
highlights chrysanthemum. The cocktails are also excellent.
WE ARE GREETED - RATHER FITTINGLY - WITH A GLASS OF
ROSE SPARKLING WINE
In
pink as the regal entranceway. Half a dozen smiling and
the midst of negotiating the hectic roads of
Jaipur, the bustling capital of Rajasthan,
our driver suddenly swings the car into
a discreet driveway. We pass through a
turreted “elephant gate” painted a pretty
pale pink and follow the gravelled route
flanked by verdant gardens before pulling
up outside a palace painted in the same
smartly dressed men each wearing a distinctive candy
pink turban wait to welcome us. We are greeted – rather
fittingly for The Pink City – with a glass of rose sparkling
wine.
So far, so Jaipur perhaps but inside is a complete
surprise. Sujan Rajmahal Palace, now a luxury boutique
hotel, may be approaching 300 years old but its interior
has been decorated in a refreshingly contemporary way.
Each of the public spaces is adorned with fantastically
striking, custom made wallpaper from bright pinks and
turquoise blues to sultry Art Deco Chinoiserie and Indian
inspired designs. The chandeliers, antiques and paintings
remind you however that you are staying in a royal
residence.
As palaces go Rajmahal is on the petite side rather than
a mammoth mausoleum with just 14 guest rooms – it
was commissioned by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II for
his wife. Society interior designer Adil Ahmad, recently
commissioned to spruce the place up, has achieved a
sumptuous cosiness that feels like a private home albeit a
very grand one. Jaipur’s royal family still own Rajmahal
(it is run by Sujan, the renowned company behind three
luxury tented camps in Rajasthan) and the princess has an
office in the grounds though they reside in the far larger
City Palace in old Jaipur (the hotel can arrange a private
tour of this palace as well as secure you a set in the royal
box at the polo).
While still a royal residence, Rajmahal played host to
the likes of Queen Elizabeth the second, the Prince and
Princess of Wales and Jackie Kennedy as the framed
black and white photographs and the names of the suites
attest. Beautiful carpets gifted by another distinguished
visitor, the Shah of Iran, hang on the walls as the Maharini
magnanimously wanted everyone to enjoy them. The
family’s love of “the sport of kings” is also reflected in
The Polo Bar, lined with trophies and photographs.
Our Palace Room is reached via a stunning marble
staircase and like all the guest rooms and suites lies
discreetly behind mirrored doors which adds to the feeling
of a private home. Inside our host tells me “A Maharini
does not make her own coffee,” before explaining that
there are no facilities for hot beverages in the room: “You
ring, and we will bring you coffee.”
Once you’ve ticked off sightseeing inside the old walled
city and the Amber Fort; and shopped ‘til you’ve dropped
in the bazaars and boutiques, Rajmahal Palace provides a
whimsical oasis. We spend our days exploring in the early
mornings, after breakfasting on fresh juice and stuffed
parathas, and retreating to Rajmahal in the heat of the
afternoon. The hotel has the bonus of a large, glamorous
looking swimming pool surrounded by inviting sun
loungers. The designer has had fun here too with a shady
terrace complete with mirrors and modern chandeliers
which look spectacular at dusk. And a note for shopping
fans: there’s a branch of the revered New Delhi based
Kashmir Loom at Rajmahal so you can stock up on the
best cashmere shawls without leaving the grounds.
Another unique touch is that afternoon tea is served to
hotel guests every day between 4 pm and 6 pm. You may
have it wherever you wish, but one particularly charming
spot is on the manicured lawn under a series of attractive
open sided tents (pale pink of course).
A pleasant surprise for the (relatively) diminutive size
of the hotel is that there are three dining rooms, each
more strikingly designed than the other: the grand Orient
Occident is open for dinner while the cool mint Colonnade
and 51 Shades of Pink (decorated as the name suggests)
restaurants both serve breakfast and lunch. All offer
the same menu of Indian and Western dishes; we stuck
resolutely to the former which is excellent.
We also tried one of the Sujan Rajmahal Palace’s private
dining experiences one evening, dining in one of the
aforementioned tents on the lawn. At night the scene is
enticingly lit by lanterns and makes for a gorgeous venue.
As a Rajmahal guest, arrangements may also be made for
IN THE GOLDEN LIGHT WE PASS CAMEL AND CARTS AND
GOATS BEING HERDED
a private dining experience at the City Palace.
sujanluxury.com
Some 80 kilometres outside Jaipur deep in the
countryside is a former royal hunting ground turned
exclusive retreat. The tranquil Amanbagh, part of the
elite Aman resorts, surrounded by the Aravali Hills is the
perfect antidote to energetic Jaipur.
As we draw nearer we pass through a village entirely
devoted to the craft of stone masonry. Apparently, orders
are placed for these statues from far and wide across
the region. The landscape becomes rockier and the road
bumpier until we reach the ancient walled grounds of
Amanbagh. Within are palm, mango and fig trees and a
camel trots down the driveway ahead of us. “He is Babu,
our in-house camel,” explains our driver. Lucky old Babu
being an Aman camel I can’t help but think.
Although Amanbagh is 21st century built it’s classic
fairytale India in its design: all romantic domes and
archways, colonnades and courtyards, in pink marble and
sandstone. Our room is a Pool Pavilion, a standalone villa
with its own private swimming pool. We spend most of
our time in the terraced garden and are joined variously
by families of monkeys and colourful butterflies and birds
that swoop over the pool.
Some guests come to Amanbagh for safari trips to the
nearby Sariska Tiger Reserve (further afield Ranthambore
may be more well-known, but Sariska is less crowded
and has a high rate of tiger sightings); others book in for
the four to 21-day Ayurvedic programmes. And there are
easily do-able day trips to lesser visited sites such as the
temples of Neelkanth, serene Somsagar Lake (good for
picnics or meditation) and the abandoned city of Bhangarh
where you are more likely to encounter monkeys and
peacocks than other tourists. As such it makes for a
special place for a yoga session. But one of the unique,
unforgettable experiences of Amanbagh is simply to
witness rural Rajasthani life around you.
One evening we joined aarti at the local roadside temple
where devout locals banged drums, rang bells and chanted
to herald the last hour of prayer. Another night we joined
‘The Cow Dust Tour’, so named after the Indian phrase for
the time of day when the cows are lead home, stirring up
dust as they go.
Just before dusk we head out in an open topped jeep
and pass a smattering of chhatri, a hillside fort and temple
(once connected by tunnel) and a “haunted” village. In
the golden light we pass camel and carts and goats being
herded. Long, loopy tailed langur monkeys regard us
from stone walls and smaller macaque monkeys crouch
overhead in the trees. There’s an abundance of peacocks
and it’s easy to see why this area is a bird watchers’
paradise even though at the time of our visit many have
already migrated.
Women in brightly coloured safaris and headscarves
of orange, yellow and purple farm the fields for wheat or
okra, the former impressively balanced on their heads in
huge parcels and the latter a local speciality that later we
see being sold in the village centres. As we drive through
tiny enclaves small children run out waving and calling
“goodbye!” to us and we are invited in for chai several
times.
That evening we sample both okra and goat on the
Amanbagh’s superb pan Indian menu. We eschew the
pleasant air conditioned dining room each meal for the
terrace, overlooking the fabulous swimming pool and
serenaded every night by traditional musicians. There
are also opportunities for private dining on the lantern lit
roof terrace or more intrepid locations in the surrounding
countryside.
As with all Amans there’s a calming energy about
the resort that’s hard to leave. And of course the spa is
fantastic (the suites are particularly stunning). As well
as Ayurvedic treatments, following a consultation with a
traditional Indian medicine doctor, there’s a range of body
treatments on offer such as the Maharaja or Maharani
massage which I opt for. The masseuse applied just the
right amount of firm pressure to sort out my back tension
and I emerged feeling as if I was walking taller.
And if you haven’t had your fill of shopping by the time
you reach Amanbagh, the boutique here has a tight, expert
edit from some of Jaipur’s finest including The Gem
Palace and Kashmir Loom. This being Aman they promise
to fetch more from Jaipur if you wish. aman.com/resorts/
TUSCANY, AN INDULGENT COMBINATION OF WINE,
FOOD AND SCENIC LANDSCAPES
Tuscany has one of the most alluring landscapes
in the whole of Italy and its rolling hills
covered in vineyards and olive groves
continues to lure travellers from all around
the world. Fortress-topped peaks are scattered across
the countryside reminding visitors of the past tussles
that occurred throughout history between the region’s
powerful city states.
The most significant locations are now protected as
UNESCO World Heritage Sites and include central
Florence, the historic centre of Siena, historic centre
of San Gimignano, historic Pienza, the Medici villas
and gardens, Piazza de Duomo in Pisa and the Val
d’Orcia.
Visitors can explore these sites as well as enjoy the
picturesque landscape, superb wines and wonderful
food on a self-drive holiday with May being a perfect
time of year with perfect Mediterranean weather and
just before the European summer with its crowds and
over-booked hotels.
Montalcino is a medieval hill town located in
southern Tuscany that came under the influence
of Florence in the mid 16th century after various
conflicts between Siena and Florence. It is a lessvisited
Tuscan destination and a good base to explore
the more popular cities of Siena (42km away) and
Florence (110km away) to the north.
Historical Context
Wine is an important element of any visit to Tuscany
with several iconic wines including Chianti and
Brunello di Montalcino. The Etruscans started
cultivating grapes in southern Tuscany many
centuries ago with contemporary winemakers
continually refining the technology to produce some
of the world’s most acclaimed wines. Montalcino
is famous for its Brunello di Montalcino red wine
while in other parts of Tuscany, Chianti is king
although both are made from the same grape variety
of Sangiovese.
Opposite, clockwise from top left, Abbazia di Sant
at Enoteca Franci Previous pages, from left, Panorama
of Montalcino; there are several cellars in the town for
sampling the famous wines of Tuscany.
Montalcino is a great walking destination as it’s
not too undulating and with steps in the steeper parts.
Caution needs to be exercised while walking along
the main thoroughfares as vehicles use the mostly
one-way alleyways. Narrow cobblestone lanes
dominate and the narrower pathways are pedestrian
only. While maps are available of the town and its
roads, Montalcino is a good place to wander with
little chance of getting lost.
The 14th century fortress is the place to start
exploring as it is located on the highest land in the
town where it’s possible to view the various valleys
below. There are several old churches within the
walled town including the Duomo or cathedral near
the main town plaza including a Friday market.
Sant’ Antimo, just 5km from Montalcino, is another
famous abbey where monks used to chant. However,
they became a victim of their own success with
tourists and the religious significance of the chanting
became lost in translation with too many camerabearing
tourists and all that visitors can expect now is
recorded chanting. However, the valley setting is very
scenic making it well worth visiting.
Estate Living
Being an ancient walled town, space is limited and
most of the accommodation in the town itself is in
small hotels and bed and breakfast properties. Some
of the district’s wineries also provide accommodation
but this too is on a small scale.
In Montalcino, families should check into
Residence Palazzo Saloni which is a quaint familyoperated
property with spacious rooms including
some with self-catering facilities. Enjoy comfortable
no-frills accommodation with an excellent buffet
breakfast on the back terrace that affords panoramic
views of the valley.
For grand estate living, stay on the Castello Banfi
wine estate in the 18th century hamlet known as
Il Borgo inside the stone walls and towers of the
Castello. While wine lovers will be especially
attracted to the estate, the accommodation has
universal appeal. Luxurious accommodation is
located either side of the sloping village street which
is ideal for families and children to play. Beautiful
residential hideaways have been sumptuously
appointed by one of Italy’s leading interior designers
to reflect Tuscan country style with all the comforts
of a sophisticated house.
“THE TUSCANS HAVE THE FACULTY OF MAKING MUCH
Known in the 13th century as Poggio alle Mura,
Castello Banfi is one of the most acclaimed winemakers
in the region as well as producing a range of other
agricultural products on the estate. These can all be
sampled at the estate’s restaurants and purchased in
its produce store where the locally-produced balsamic
vinegar is not to be missed. While the wine cellar and
restaurants are open year-round, its accommodation is
only opened in 2017 from March 24 to November 12.
Probably the most exclusive address in this part
of Tuscany is the Rosewood-managed Castiglion del
Bosco which is basically a boutique resort in an 800
year old village that is part of a 2,000ha estate owned
by Massimo and Chiara Ferragamo (of fashion house
fame). The Borgo is a historic village that forms the
heart of the estate which is also famous for producing
wine. There are two restaurants and a cooking school
but surprisingly, no Ferragamo boutique.
Golf is another great reason to stay here as hotel
guests get a once in a lifetime opportunity to play on the
exclusive 18-hole championship golf course. Designed
by British Open winner Tom Weiskopf, the exclusive
members’ only course, and there are only a handful
of members in what is Italy’s only private course,
allows hotel guests just two rounds of golf per annum
regardless of how long they stay on the property.
Wining and Dining
Food and wine play a central role in a holiday to
Tuscany with the main red wine focus being Brunello
di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino. Serious
wine lovers should visit the Consorzio Brunello di
Montalcino offices in the centre of the town for details
on over 200 of the finest wine producers in the region.
Ristorante Re di Macchia is located in the centre of
Montalcino and serves dishes such as salad with roast
rabbit, homemade ravioli with spinach and wild boar
ragu and some of the biggest t-bone steaks in the region.
Another centrally located wine cellar and restaurant
is Isadori do Montalcino where a light lunch of cold
cuts and cheeses outside at the front of the restaurant is
highly recommended.
Opposite, clockwise from top left, stay in Castello Banfi Il
Borgo; luxurious accommodate at Castello Banfi Il Borgo;
relax at the end of the day in the pool at Castello Banfi Il
Borgo; explore Montalcino on foot or bike; pair wine and
food.
Osteria di Porta al Cassero is an intimate, casual
and popular restaurant in the town centre where risotto
with porcini fungi and tripe stew with saffron are two
signature dishes.
Trattoria Il Pozzo, 5km south of Montalcino in the
village of Sant’ Angelo In Colle is another casual place
to eat and ideal for children as there is plenty of space
on the outside terrace. The ricotta ravioli here is highly
recommended.
A fine dining experience not to miss is in the wine
estate of Castello Banfi where regional cured meats,
cheeses, olive oil, honey, artisanal pasta, and biscotti
feature. For lunch, dine in La Taverna and for something
more formal in the evening, Sala dei Grappoli is
renowned for elegance and refinement plus awardwinning
estate wines.
Other wineries such as Caparzo, Fattoria dei Barbi,
Col d’Orcia, and Bottega have restaurants attached to
their cellar door.
Getting There
Emirates (www.emirates.com) has daily flights
from Singapore to Rome via Dubai with excellent
connectivity and the opportunity to shop on the way
back home.
Getting About
Montalcino is a 2.5 hour drive from Rome Airport
(200km) and a rental car is the best way to get around
and see the sites of Tuscany. Alternatively, use the
services of hire cars and vans with drivers. Bike hire is
available within Montalcino although it’s possible to
walk around the town.
Accommodation
Montalcino has comfortable small hotel accommodation
with limited levels of service while intimate and
luxurious boutique properties are available in the
surrounding countryside. Check in to Castello Banfi
Il Borgo (www.castellobanfiilborgo.com), Rosewood
Vancouver
The Rocky Mountaineer is a luxury rail service
running on four routes in western Canada.
Journeying on the train is a comfortable way
of seeing the region’s landscapes and wildlife.
This year, with Canadians celebrating 150 years since
Confederation — the act that united Britain’s North
American colonies and is regarded by residents as the
birth of their nation — rail travel seems a particularly
fitting as a way of exploring this vast and scenic
country.
Some people speculate as to whether British
Columbia would today even be a part of Canada if
it wasn’t for the Canadian Pacific Railway. It could
well have joined the United States of America, rather
than the Dominion of Canada, if politicians in the
eastern Provinces hadn’t agreed to the enormous
undertaking of financing its construction. In the
late-19th century, an age when powered air travel
was still a distant dream, the railway represented the
only feasible method of rapidly transporting people
and goods across the continent. Even today it takes
four-and-a-half hours to fly the 3,350 kilometres that
separate Vancouver and Toronto. Rail aficionados
may prefer to cover the ground between the two cities
with a journey aboard The Canadian, the train that
takes just shy of three-and-a-half days to cover that
distance.
The Rocky Mountaineer began operating in 1990
and now carries well over 100,000 passengers a year.
It has become recognised as one of the world’s great
train journeys and is an aspirational travel experience.
The First Passage to the West skirts a scenic,
600-kilometre route between Vancouver and Banff
over two days. It passes numerous points noteworthy
for rail enthusiasts, including the Cisco Crossing,
where both the Canadian Pacific and the Canadian
National Railway lines cross the fast-flowing Fraser
River. Arguably the most significant is Craigellachie,
in British Columbia, the place where the final metal
spike was ceremonially hammered into the track to
complete the construction of the Canadian Pacific
Railway on 7 November 1885. Travellers on the train
are unable to disembark to visit the Last Spike Gift
Shoppe and memorial cairn, but they can snap photos
of visitors waving at the train, whose distinctive gold
and blue livery makes it popular with photographers
as it rolls through the countryside.
Guests travelling from west to east are invited
to board the train at a dedicated terminal on the
edge of Vancouver. A smartly turned out gentleman
in Scottish national dress, complete with kilt and
sporran, plays the bagpipes, piping passengers
aboard. As the train accelerates away from the station
non-travelling members of the Rocky Mountaineer’s
staff form a guard of honour to wave off guests — a
scene that prompts many onboard to reach for their
cameras and click the first of many photos during the
journey.
Travellers can choose between two levels of
onboard service — SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf.
Selecting SilverLeaf means travelling in a singlelevel
carriage and being served food at the seat
allocated for the journey. GoldLeaf carriages, by
comparison, have two floors. Meals are served in the
dining carriage on the lower level. Reclining leather
seats are ranged beneath dome-windows on the upper
level, offering elevated, panoramic views over the
landscape through which the train traverses. Those
windows, incidentally, are cleaned prior to each day’s
travel, to minimise the chance of flecks impinging
views or being recorded in photographs.
An enhanced Deluxe GoldLeaf service guarantees
the most luxurious guestrooms in hotels. That means
staying in an executive suite at the Fairmont Olympic
hotel in Seattle, while travelling on the Coastal
Passage route, and overnighting in either the five-star
291-room Four Seasons Resort Whistler while on
the Rainforest to Gold Rush route, running between
Vancouver and Jasper.
Guests alight at the end of each day’s journey.
For those travelling through the Canadian Rockies,
on both the First Passage to the West and Journey
Through the Clouds routes, that means spending a
night in a comfortable hotel in downtown Kamloops.
The four-star Sandman Signature Kamloops
Hotel overlooks the town’s Riverside Park, by the
confluence of the North and South Thompson Rivers.
The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Kamloops is another
of the properties where Rocky Mountaineer guests
can lie down for the night.
Seats aboard the train have lots of leg room, but
one of the joys of undertaking a rail journey is that it’s
possible to get up to walk around at any point. The
carriages have open vestibules at their rears. Keen
photographers tend to enjoy spending time out on the
vestibule as it means being able to lean out and record
images without catching reflections on the inside of
windows. It also means being able to breathe in air
laden with the fresh scent of pine or spruce while
travelling through areas of dense forestation.
One of the disadvantages of spending time on
the vestibule is that the rush of air and clacking
of the track make it tricky to hear the informative
commentaries provided by members of the guest
services team as the train passes points of interest
or wildlife along the route. Intermittently, the team
takes turns to use a microphone to provide travellers
with advice when the train is approaching photo
opportunities, and recount anecdotes providing
insights into the heritage of landmarks. An onboard
radio system means that the driver can relay
information regarding wildlife sightings, so that
guests are ready to photograph animals such as
bighorn sheep, bald eagles and grizzly bears —
including The Boss, the 250-kilogram male who
inhabits territory on the edge of Banff National Park.
Though the guest services team commit to memory a
lengthy script, they adapt and enhance it according to
their personal interests. That means some providing
knowledgeable insights into railway history while
others give commentaries about the behaviour and
lifecycle of grizzlies.
Like the mighty bears, who pull leaping salmon
fresh from the rivers of western Canada, guests
travelling in the GoldLeaf carriages can tuck into
locally sourced fish for lunch. The team of chefs
working aboard the fleet of Rocky Mountaineer
trains sends out around 500,000 plates of exquisitely
presented food each year. The cuisine is designed to
meet the demands of discerning diners who are no
strangers to cruising or fine-dining establishments.
The menu includes vegetarian and gluten-free dishes
and evolves each season. But old favourites — such
as the short ribs, made with Alberta beef — have
featured on the menu for years.
A 10-day tour, aimed at gourmet travellers, is being
added to the array of packages offering adventure
experiences and sightseeing opportunities before and
after journeys on the Rocky Mountaineer. The First
Passage to the West Culinary Exploration includes
a guided culinary walking tour of Granville Island
or the expansive Chinatown district of Vancouver,
plus two six-course tasting menus paired with
wine. One of those is in the Eden Restaurant at The
Rimrock Resort Hotel in Banff, which holds one of
the American Automobile Association’s coveted Five
Diamond ratings.
Anybody wishing to learn more about the cuisine
served in British Columbia can participate in one
of the newly introduced guided walking tours of
Kamloops, run by ACT Adventures. A local guide
rush and, of course, the railway played roles in
establishing Kamloops. A memorial to the first settlers
of European origin, who walked from Winnipeg, stands
opposite Brownstone Restaurant, where popular dishes
are given a gourmet twist. The starters include poutine
— traditionally a comfort food of French fries topped
with gravy and curds — featuring wild mushroom,
truffle oil and roast chicken. The main courses include
locally caught rainbow trout and breast of duck from
nearby Brome Lake. The renowned poet Robert Service
worked in the heritage building now occupied by
Brownstone’s while it was still used as the Canadian
Bank of Commerce.
Banff, the First Passage to the West’s eastern
terminus, stands in Canada’s oldest national park and
forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The
national park was established in 1885 to encourage
tourism to geothermal springs that were discovered,
by chance, while railway construction workers took
a break on Sulphur Mountain in 1883. The Banff
Gondola now runs to the summit of that mountain,
where a rooftop observation platform offers panoramic
views of the surrounding landscape. Tours of the
Cave and Basin National Historic Site are a way of
learning about the discovery of the springs. Bathers
who enjoy high-end experiences might prefer a trip
to the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel’s Willow Stream
Spa. The grand hotel has 764 guestrooms and is built
in the style of a Scottish manor. Reputedly haunted, it
is a national heritage site because of the significance of
its role in attracting rail travellers to the national park,
over which it has commanding views.
Dining with a backdrop of mountain scenery is also
an option at nearby Lake Louise, which was named
in honour of the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria —
Princess Louisa Caroline Alberta — after whom the
province is also called. Sitting in the Fairmont Chateau
Lake Louise’s Walliser Stube, where fondue is served,
provides views onto the lake and the steep slopes of the
Canadian Rockies that rise above it, forming one of the
country’s most popular ski resorts.
Winter sports continue to draw visitors to the
mountainous region outside of the season from April
until October, when Rocky Mountaineer trains roll
across the landscape of Canada’s West.
