Farewell, Jumbolino!
Article by Mike Wyss
Since the Avro RJ100
entered service in the
1990‘s, the „Jumbolino“
was the workhorse
of Crossair and later
Swiss European Air
Lines. The Avro RJ100
was well known because
of it‘s unusual shape.
Four engines, four
times the Honeywell
LF507 powered the RJ,
the airbrake and the
design as upper decker
made it so famous.
The combination of the
small engines and the
upper wing made it
possible, for the most
people on board, to
have a good look down
on the ground. The
Avro was once built to
provide airports with
short runways and carry
up to 112 passengers.
The Avro was created
by British Aerospace
in the United Kingdom
and flew for many airlines
like British Airways,
United Airlines,
Crossair and CityJet.
Importance for Crossair
and Swissair
The Avro was very important
for Crossair.
Not only for short range!
Swissair flew mainly
long haul in this era, so
Crossair was the Swiss
short haul carrier. They
flew the passengers
from whole Europe to
Zurich where they changed
on the bigger
aircrafts to continue to
Asia or America. Swissair
had, as you may
know, an important
role in this years what
brought many passeengers
from very different
countries to fly with
them.
Continue at Swiss
Later the Jumbolino
continued at Swiss European
Air Lines where
it was the common
aircraft for many years.
Like Swissair did,
Swiss now shuttles the
passengers to Zurich
to bring them on long
haul.
On the 20th of August
the Avro RJ100, HB-
IYZ, did it‘s last flight
with passengers on
board. Two days later
the aircraft already left
for the scrapyard in the
United Kingdom.
