Report
From the ISRRT desk of Public Relations
November 2009
Report by Fozy Peer, Director of ISRRT
Public Relations
2009 has proved to be a busy year for activities
related to the public relations portfolio. The team
has attended various meetings and activities in
their respective regions and policy documents
have been compiled and/or reviewed.
‘The Role of a Professional Organization’
has been compiled as a guideline and is
available on the ISRRT website. A powerpoint
presentation entitled ‘Why Radiography as a
Career’ is available from the CEO for use by
members to promote Radiography. The criteria
for corporate membership have been reviewed.
The guidelines on hosting congresses are in
the process of being updated. To promote
the ISRRT and its activities the presentation on ‘ISRRT an
International Perspective’ and/or the flyer ‘Why Support the
ISRRT’ may be used. Also available are the criteria for the
use of the ISRRT logo.
At the recent board meeting, it was proposed that the 50th
anniversary of ISRRT be commemorated during the World
Congress in Canada in 2012. The ISRRT was founded in
1962. The history of the ISRRT is to be compiled and made
available by 2012. Ideas for the celebration of this event,
newsworthy historical items and pictures are welcomed.
The theme adopted by the ISRRT for the World
Radiography Day celebrations for 2009 is “Radiographers
Care about YOUR Protection”. This is in keeping with
“Image Gently” initiative of the ‘Alliance for Radiation
Safety in Pediatric Imaging’. By agreeing to become an
affiliate of the alliance, the ISRRT has agreed to:
• Endorse the primary objective of raising awareness in
the imaging community of the need to adjust radiation
dose when imaging children and the ultimate goal of
changing practice.
• Communicate the Alliance messages through our
organization’s electronic and print media on specified
release dates.
• Communicate the Alliance’s goals to their members
and constituents through mail, email, conferences, and
meetings.
• Offer contributions to the body of knowledge for
possible inclusion on the Alliance website.
• Refer questions and media queries to the designated
public spokespersons from the founding member
organisations.
The ISRRT website is constantly reviewed and updates are
requested. E-copies of previous ISRRT Newsletters are
available on the website. Hopefully this edition (November
2009) of the newsletter will be available in French and
Spanish. Currently hardcopies of the Newsletter are published
in May and November each year; however this is being
reviewed due to the high costs of printing and postage. In
future the newsletter might only be available electronically.
Also this will be in keeping with our ‘environment friendly
initiative’. In future, electronic communication from the
ISRRT will display the following message:
As a public relations exercise, I suggested that members
of the PR team be allowed to attend at least one major event/
meeting in their respective regions. This will allow for the
radiographic community to interact with and relate the
extended ISRRT management team and it will enhance the
PR portfolio. Currently PR regional reps attend meetings at
their own expense. This was discussed at the recent Board
meeting and hopefully will be approved in the next budget.
The meeting to be attended will be discussed with the
regional directors and vice presidents. The PR representatives
are:
– Sumbo Oyedele (Africa)
– Tan Chek Wee (Asia-Australasia)
– Stefano (Europe)
– Sean Richardson (The Americas)
Do keep the ISRRT informed of interesting events that take
place in your countries.
Robert George, Sandy Yule and other Board members
are great PR ambassadors of the ISRRT as they promote
the ISRRT extensively during their travels. Many thanks
to my fellow Board members for their valuable and
continued support.
