Welcome to the October 2017 edition
At 2am Sunday, October 29th , the clocks
will go back one hour as we move from
British Summer Time to Greenwich Mean
Time, giving us some extra time in bed.
Apparently, William Willett had the idea
of Daylight Saving Time in Britain back
in 1907.Willett died of flu aged 58, a year
before Germany first adopted his clockchanging
plan on April 30, 1916. Britain
followed a month later on May 21. So, I
have Mr Willett to thank for my extra
hour in bed this month—thank you!
Space for items in Community Corner
is free of charge. Community Corner is
for local clubs, charities, not for profit
groups and events etc. To have your
As we grow older..
… we may require more support to live healthier, happier and safer lives.
Families live further apart than with previous generations, which could
compromise the physical support you are able to provide for your loved
ones.
The realisation that your nearest and dearest are not able to care for
themselves is emotionally draining, and having to make the decision for
them regarding how best to provide support can feel impossible.
Aspen Live in Care provides a happy alternative to a care home,
enabling your loved ones to continue to live in their own home with care
and companionship. The beauty of live in care is that it is one-on-one and
without institutional routine. Life is lived at their own pace with care and
support provided by a fully-trained and experienced carer, offering you
much-needed emotional relief that being cared for at home brings.
Aspen offer a flexible service, including holiday cover, for a range of
needs.
If you think Aspen Live in Care can help you and your family, we invite
you to contact Gill and Paula to discuss your requirements.
Tax on Staff Christmas Gifts
Question: I’m looking at what to order my employees for their Christmas presents. I don’t want my
employees to pay tax or National Insurance on their gifts or have the hassle of any extra admin!
Answer: If you buy your employees a seasonal gift such as a joint of meat or a box of chocolates, then
this would likely be deemed ‘trivial’, meaning there would be no reporting requirements and tax and/or
National Insurance will not be due.
Since 6th April 2016, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will accept a benefit is trivial if it satisfies these
conditions:
1. the cost of providing the benefit does not exceed £50 (or the average cost per employee if a benefit
is provided to a group of employees and it is impracticable to work out the exact cost per person);
2. the benefit is not cash or a cash voucher;
3. the employee is not entitled to the benefit as part of any contractual obligation (including under
salary sacrifice arrangements); and
4. the benefit is not provided in recognition of particular services performed by the employee as part of
their employment duties
For more generous gifts, the cash equivalent must be taxed via the payroll, form P11D or a Pay As You
Earn Settlement Agreement (PSA). With the first two options, tax and National Insurance will be
triggered and will be deducted from the employee. However, with a PSA the employer agrees to settle
their liability.
Gifts and entertaining is a complex area and can have a multitude of tax, National Insurance and VAT
implications.
If you would like an accountant to deal with your tax affairs on your behalf, please feel free to contact
John Biggs of TaxAssist Accountants in Epsom & Ewell on 020 8393 1204 who would be happy to help.
PENSIONS ADVICE
Useful Advice from Citizens Advice
I’ve just started a new job and am being
offered auto-enrolment for the first time.
Do I have to join the scheme? I’m worried
about meeting my living costs if I do.
Even if retirement is a long way off, or you’ve
got immediate costs you need to cover it’s still
worth starting a pension.
They are a great way to save for the future
and can offer you financial security once
you’ve stopped working. They’re also good
value for money as your contribution gets
topped up by both your employer and the
government.
If you’re worried that auto-enrolment will
make it harder for you to keep up with your
living costs ask your employer how much your
monthly contribution will be. Then add up the
cost of your monthly expenses and take this
away from your income,
which should include
your pensions
deduction.
It’s also worth seeing if you’re able to start
receiving tax credits or a benefit such as
Universal Credit to help with your living costs.
You will be automatically signed up to autoenrolment
so if you decide that you don’t want
to contribute to a pension, you will need to opt
out and you’ll need to tell your employer this.
Make sure you tell them within one month to
get a refund on the contribution you’ve made.
For further help understanding your options,
or for help on any other issues, contact
Citizens Advice Epsom & Ewell by phone
0300 330 1164 (10am-4pm, Mon-Fri) or in
