For more information and to be part of the solutions in Hopedale visit www. communityimpactinc.net To begin educating the community, let’s discuss addictionrelated stigma: Stigma affects people with addictions in two ways: externally— through rejection by friends, relatives, neighbors, and employers; and internally—through aggravated feelings of rejection, loneliness, and depression. They generally experience a loss of control over the amount of substance used or the amount of time they intended to use the substance. Addicted people frequently experience gutwrenching episodes of relapse. As if that’s not enough, addicted people also experience stigma— in many areas of their lives and through all phases of active addiction, treatment, and recovery. Although the sting of addiction-related stigma can be felt most strongly and frequently by addicted people, it is also experienced by their family and friends, co-workers, and employers. People struggling with substance abuse problems typically experience multiple levels of burden. The first level of burden is the addictive process itself. Addicted people typically experience compulsion, loss of control, continued substance use despite knowledge of adverse consequences, and episodes of relapse. The addictive process alone is a powerful and difficult burden on people’s lives. At the same time, addicted people generally experience significant biopsychosocial problems that are caused or worsened by the addiction. These include problems regarding physical and psychological health, social functioning, employment stability, and legal or criminal justice involvement. These biopsychosocial problems act as a second powerful level of burden among addicted people. To make matters worse, addicted and recovering people experience an additional level of burden caused by the stigma associated with addiction. For some, this stigma can create problems that are as serious, disruptive, and dangerous as the addiction itself. These include a wide range of problems, from emotional problems, such as shame, to medical crises or a denial of medical services. WHAT IS ADDICTION- RELATED STIGMA? Addiction-related stigma affects people in different ways. As a result, there is a wealth of ways in which people understand, perceive, and define stigma and the effects of stigma on addicted people. Stigma assumes many forms. It appears as prejudice, discrimination, fear, shame, distrust, and stereotyping. It is our hope the Hopedale Community begins to understand the facts that addiction is a disease affecting that can affect anyone in the community. We ask everyone to become more open to ending the stigma and giving assistance and understanding to these individuals. As stated earlier, the Hopedale Opioid Task Force will be publishing more educational articles and creating publicity to raise awareness of this health crisis affecting our Nation, State, Region and our community. More than 200 Hopedale graduates and their guests enjoyed dinner, music and a chance to reminisce with classmates and friends as the Alumni marked the anniversary of the town’s first graduating Class of 1887—which included just two students—and the major role the Alumni now play in supporting students and classroom teachers with $80,000 in scholarships and $40,000 in grants each year. Dinner committee chairwoman Karen Mazzarelli thanked all those who made the evening a success and noted “We were so lucky to grow up in Hopedale, where ‘Blue Raider Spirit’ never fades.” A member of the Class of 1949 of Hopedale High, Betty was joined by her family as the Alumni presented her with roses, DON’T MISS THESE TRIPS TO MECHANICS’ HALL FOR BROWN BAG WED. The most senior alumni attending the anniversary celebration were Richard and Joyce Hoberg from the Class of 1947. Graduates from around the country were at the dinner and several, including the 50-year Class of 1967, held reunions as part of the celebration weekend. It was noted by Alumni President Henry Cyr that Mrs. Butcher also recently retired as Secretary-Treasurer of the Hopedale Village Cemetery board, adding “We hope what we say and do tonight will let you know the love, respect and gratitude we have for you and all you’ve done for Hopedale.” Betty’s plans for the future: “Putting my feet up and reading some good books.” Annual Downtown Winter Stroll to be Held Saturday, December 2 The Friends of Historic Hopedale’s 7 th annual Hopedale Downtown Winter Stroll will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 from 2pm to 8pm. Once again we will team up with the Hopedale Community House who will be offering their popular tree lighting festivities. The Community House will host the annual art show from the Hopedale Cultural Council, performances and activities from the high school students, free hot chocolate from the Town Common and the Hopedale Police Department and a visit from Santa who will arrive thanks to the Hopedale Fire Department later in the night. The Winter Stroll will take place along Hopedale Street between the high school and the Little Red Shop Museum and will include vendors and tree sales at the gym, scout wreath sales, special offers from downtown businesses, vendors and character visits at the Little Red Shop Museum and several performers and activities placed along the route.
