Rotary in action ... “ Polio Plus”
Polio is 99% of the way
to being eradicated!
After more than 25 years, Rotary and its partners
have reduced polio cases worldwide from 350,000
in 1988 to only 223 in 2012.
But the work is still not completed!
The remaining 1% of polio cases are the most
difficult to prevent because the virus persists
in the hardest-to-reach areas.
This is a massive effort by
Rotary and its partners.
Only one other human
disease, smallpox, has ever
been eradicated.
We are ‘this close’ but the
work needs to be completed
to prevent a resurgence of
this devastating virus which
affects mainly children
under 5 years of age.
