YOUR VIEW DATA DIVE Many Missourians are stuck with slow internet ow loading. Content is buffering. Please wait. No matter how you put it, many Missouri communities Nare stuck in the slow lane of a fast-paced, connected economy. Data from the Federal Communications Commission shows that 20 percent of Missouri residents don’t have access to quality broadband. Only seven states have a higher percentage of residents who lack access to broadband. Just two of Missouri’s neighboring states, Arkansas and Oklahoma, fare worse when it comes to broadband access. Illinois is our strongest-performing neighboring state, with only 9 percent of its residents lacking broadband. While slow-loading websites may seem like an insignificant problem, there’s evidence that slow internet can hurt a region’s economy. A study by the World Bank showed that countries saw their GDPs rise an average of 1.3 percent for every 10 percent of their residents that gained broadband. Many times that growth comes from the expansion of small businesses. “The applications enabled by the internet are especially Broadband access compared to Missouri Better Same Worse important for small businesses and rural communities because they have become crucial platforms for innovation in health care, education, entrepreneurship and communications,” said Darrell West, vice president and director of governance studies and the founding director of the Center for Technology Innovation at the Brookings Institution. “High-speed, universal broadband furthers productivity and generates powerful new efficiencies and economies of scale.” Internet speed and reliability has also become a crucial part of economic development, and job creation projects are often steered away from communities that lack high-speed access. A 2011 article in Site Selection magazine said that for businesses researching where to bring new jobs, broadband internet is rising to the level of electric, gas, water and other common utilities. According to the article, “corporate site selectors expect broadband. It is not a perk or special benefit. The article, “Many Missourians are stuck with slow internet,” discusses access to broadband service in Missouri relative to other states. While it is fair to acknowledge the gap in broadband access in certain rural areas of Missouri, the article did not seek to discuss or explore why that may be the case. The article pointed out the perceived deficiencies in the services provided by Missouri’s broadband providers without giving them the opportunity to present their viewpoint.
