THE trade always likes good, reliable, 

dependable segments: ignition, 

oils, and of course batteries. 

And like so many others the battery 

segment has hanged considerably, 

with many more part numbers, but those 

selling in fewer numbers. 

While we once had one or two batteries that 

were an equivalent of the multigrade oil in 

that they could be used in most of the car 

parc, that has changed, with more battery 

sizes and types needed to offer anywhere like 

healthy car parc coverage. 

As winter approaches it’s important you 

have sufficient stocks to meet any sudden 

demand, or have a distributor you can rely 

on to meet any sudden distress purchase demand. 

But – and it’s an important ‘but’ – it’s important 

to offer a battery check and maybe 

a recharge if needed. Many batteries are in 

reasonably good order and a charge-up will

keep them strong and healthy for a long time. 

More importantly though, it’s a good relationship-building 

exercise that you can show is 

saving your customers money. 

Like batteries the wheels and tyres offer 

plenty of cash-generating opportunities and 

while it’s taken some workshops time to grab 

a slice of the action, those that have never 

looked back. Getting involved means investing 

in the right equipment – tyre changers, 

wheel balancers and the like – but the investment 

is definitely worthwhile, especially in 

areas where there are few fast-fits offering 

competition. 

There’s no denying the wheels and tyres 

segment can present problems, the rise in 

run-flats and larger-diameter wheels causing 

some headaches, but if these are understood 

and taken into account the outlook, 

rather than being flat like some of the tyres 

you might be dealing with, could be extremely 

buoyant.

Conference gives 

note of warning on

of change and helps drivers 

cope with a whole new set of 

demands. 

That is the overall conclusion 

reached by a collection 

of industry experts who converged 

on London for the IAM 

RoadSmart/RAC Foundation/ 

Pirelli ‘Driver Ahead?’ Conference 

last week. 

More than 100 experts in 

the industry and beyond it 

talked about their findings 

and research for the conference, 

which sought to “map 

a safe route to the driverless 

car.” 

During the Conference, 

speakers discussed how the 

next generation of autonomous 

cars will record much 

more information than ever 

before. This data can be used 

to resolve any post-crash insurance 

claims but also, critically, 

to inform and personalise 

future driver training. 

Opening the conference, 

guest speaker Victoria Coren- 

Mitchell entertained delegates 

with a thought provoking 

speech. She introduced the 

concept of “death by code,” 

challenging us to decide if 

deaths caused by a computer 

are better or worse than 

those caused by human error. 

She pointed out that: “‘What 

would I do in a driverless 

car?’ The answer is ‘Scream!’ 

What is driving this thing?” 

Simon Thompson, Human 

Factors Specialist at Jaguar 

Land Rover, said: “Without 

the driving, there will be the 

desire to do secondary tasks 

– but how does the car engage 

with the driver when it needs 

him or her? There is a lot 

more that needs to be done 

in designing cars so that controls 

are easier to find, when 

asking the driver to take over 

control again.” 

Other experts added that 

some drivers would inevitably 

misuse the vehicle systems, 

or simply find a way 

round them because they find 

it too complicated. 

Professor Nick Reed, head 

of mobility research at Bosch, 

said: “Any system needs to be 

aware of the effective use or 

misuse of it.”

Sarah Sharples, added: 

“People will break unbreakable 

technology if they find it 

inconvenient. What’s more, 

people pranking and having 

fun will cause security risks.”

pointed out there is a danger 

of switching the driver 

from underload to overload – 

where he or she has had nothing 

to do, then has a sudden 

requirement to intervene in 

an emergency situation, and 

ends up panicking and creating 

a tragedy. 

He said: “The problem with 

automation is that it is not 

currently powerful to render 

the driver completely redundant. 

It requires the driver to 

monitor continuously and intervene 

occasionally. The car 

needs to support, not replace 

the driver.” 

Nic Fasci, lead engineer for 

vehicle engineering and homologation 

at Tata Motors 

European Technical Centre, 

said: “The key to autonomous 

vehicles is training, training, 

training! The skill of driving 

must be robotic before the 

software can be developed. 

The skill of driving is being 

eroded and this can be seen 

every day.” 

Neil Greig, director of 

policy and research at IAM 

RoadSmart, concluded: 

“Having the views of so many 

experts in the industry for 

our conference was very valuable. 

It showed that the driver 

will require a great deal of reeducating 

before entering the 

world of the autonomous vehicle. 

“There is a myth that the 

car will do everything for the 

driver. It is clear the driver 

will always have a part to 

play – but is the driver ready 

for his new role - clearly not. 

That’s the reality we have to 

prepare for.”

Public appetite for electric 

vehicles continues to grow 

NEW electric vehicle 

registration 

data shows that 

public appetite for 

plug-in vehicles 

continued to accelerate in the 

third quarter of 2017. A total 

of 12,932 plug-in models 

were registered between July 

and September, a rise of 36% 

on the same period in 2016 

and 721 units higher than 

the previous record quarter, 

January-March 2017. 

The best-ever quarterly 

figures follow a record September, 

with 7,794 plug-in 

models registered (27% up 

on September 2016). This 

was driven by the rapidly 

expanding variety of plug-in 

vehicles offered by manufacturers, 

their low running 

costs, and the continuallyimproving 

national charging 

infrastructure. With demand 

continuing to increase, this 

year’s registrations are expected 

to exceed the full-year 

total for 2016 by the end of 

October. 

The popularity of pure electric 

cars continues to drive 

growth, with 11,127 new vehicles 

sold in the year so far, 

up 37% on 2016. Meanwhile, 

registrations of plug-in hybrids 

also showed strength, 

up 15% for the year-to-date, 

boosted by 5,764 new vehicles 

finding homes in September 

(a 38% rise). The 

record uptake levels pushes 

the national total of plug-in 

cars on UK roads to more 

than 120,000, meaning EV 

sales now make up for 1.7% 

of new car registrations. 

Poppy Welch, Head of Go

to see that the popularity 

of plug-in cars continues to 

grow at a record pace. To 

help even more UK motorists 

save money and cut

campaign that will help

real-world plug-in vehicle

Transport Minister, Jesse 

Norman said: “We are committed 

to investing £1bn in 

ultra-low emission vehicles, 

including £100 million in 

the UK’s charging infrastructure 

by 2021. It is great 

to see more than 120,000 

people have already made 

the switch. The launch of the 

new Go Ultra Low website 

demonstrates how ultra low 

emission vehicles can fit into 

even more people’s lives. It is 

our ambition that every new 

car and van is zero emission 

by 2040 and decarbonising 

our transport is a key part 

of the government’s Clean 

Growth Strategy.”

campaign that aims to

Ford opts for Europe 

Ford Motor Company, taking aim at Europe’s fastest-growing 

vehicle segment, has now started production of the new Ford 

EcoSport small SUV at its Craiova, Romania, assembly plant. 

The decision to build the new EcoSport in Europe rather 

than continue to import the vehicle from Ford’s plant in 

Chennai, India, will help Ford respond to rising customer 

demand.

OESAA members at 

Autoform Live 2017 

Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) will be joining its 

fellow Original Equipment Suppliers Aftermarket Association 

(OESAA) members, along with industry training 

specialist, ADS, to host Autoinform Live 2017. 

Held at the GTG Academy in Wolverhampton, between 

the 25th and 26th November, the weekend event provides 

technicians with crucial hands-on diagnostic training and 

seminars, with the aim of arming them with the latest 

repair techniques and alerting them to new technologies, 

equipment and products available in the automotive aftermarket. 

This year’s Autoinform Live has been separated into 

three groups, designed to streamline and improve the experience 

for the event’s growing number of visitors. 

Inside Autoinform Live 

Schaeffler’s team of REPXPERTs will be hosting IMI-approved 

dry double clutch system training courses throughout 

the weekend. These will begin with an introduction to 

the system and then identifying the opportunities available 

for independent workshops, before an installation 

demonstration of a Volkswagen (VAG) DSG clutch removal 

and replacement is conducted. 

The REPXPERTs will then hold a forum to show and 

discuss the differences between VAG, Ford, Renault and 

Fiat systems. Schaeffler is urging visitors to sign-up early 

and express interest in an IMI-certificated assessment 

during the event. 

Additionally, Schaeffler’s latest technical innovations 

will be on display, like the thermal management module 

(TMM), which uses sensor-controlled rotary slide valves 

to manage the temperature balance inside the vehicle’s 

drivetrain. This allows the engine and transmission to 

reach optimum temperature quickly.

The team will also be on-hand to help visitors join the

FROM the beginning of 2016, to 

qualify for a 5 star Euro NCAP 

safety rating, all new vehicles 

require a minimum of two 

advanced driver assistance 

systems (ADAS) – autonomous emergency 

braking and lane departure warning – to 

be fitted as standard. 

ADAS technology has now led to such 

innovations as traffic assistance, adaptive 

cruise control and traffic sign recognition 

to be built into a vehicle to assist the 

driver and increase vehicle safety. All 

are complex pieces of technology that 

require equipment to diagnose faults and 

reset them, should they encounter any 

problems.

problems these systems encounter – the 

correct calibration of the cameras and/or 

radars these vehicles relay on to function

workshop if the calibration is not carried 

out properly or ignored completely.

Monkleigh Garage set for South 

Africa as first big prize winner 

Monkleigh Garage,

the picturesque

has been announced as the 

first main winner in The 

Parts Alliance’s and Delphi’s 

‘Best of Brakes’ promotion. 

Having been founded by 

his grandfather in 1963,

BRAKE SYSTEMS WITH 

IMPROVED COOLING

Brembo presents 

its new PVT Plus 

system, the latest 

addition to its family 

of pillar venting 

technologies. Although they 

do not reach the 1200º Celsius 

of a Formula One car, 

braking systems of road 

cars can also overheat – a 

drawback potentially generating 

thermal cracks and 

breakage at the disc surface. 

Vane venting technology has 

been used to overcome this 

problem historically. 

With Brembo’s new PVT 

Plus venting system, the 

pillars (there are 30 to 40 

of them arranged on three 

bands, depending on the 

disc diameter) have a more 

elongated form compared 

to previous models. This increases 

thermal cracking resistance 

by up to 30 percent 

and ensures longer disk life. 

Similarly, the improved 

air flow in the system reduces 

operating temperature 

by up to 30 percent, giving 

brake pads a longer life too. 

A further advantage is the 

reduction of the disc’s mass 

by up to 10 percent, lowering 

both fuel consumption 

and emissions of pollutants. 

Besides less weight of 

the ‘unsprung masses’, this 

also increases performance, 

driving comfort and handling. 

The new PVT Plus ventilation 

is the result of two 

years of dedicated research 

by Brembo at its Kilometro 

Rosso site where it has been 

tailored to the specific needs 

of individual braking systems. 

Record for Mercedes 

With sales of 220,894 vehicles in September 

(+4.5%), Mercedes-Benz posted its 55th 

record month in succession. 1,717,300 cars 

have been delivered to customers since the 

beginning of the year, 11.7% more than in 

the same period of last year. The past three 

months were the best third quarter in the 

company’s history (573,026 units, +7.9%). In 

September, Mercedes-Benz was the premium 

brand with the most new registrations in 

several markets including Germany, France, 

Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Austria, 

Portugal, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, in the USA, 

Canada, Mexico and Brazil. 

Produced at the Mapello 

plant near Bergamo (Italy), 

PVT Plus is initially aimed 

at premium sedans like 

the Audi A6, models of the 

BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes 

E-Class. The brake 

systems of all three cars are 

generously sized and ideal 

for maximising the benefits 

of PVT Plus. However, this 

does not preclude its use at 

a later date on other cars. 

For a quarter of a century, 

Brembo has focused its research 

on the shape of the 

ventilation chamber. An early 

result, in the mid-1980s, 

was the PVT ventilation 

(Pillar Venting Technology), 

used initially on the Lancia 

Thema model. The technology 

replaced traditional vanes 

by a series of pillars, offering 

more safety of the system 

and a longer disc life. 

To meet growing market 

demands, Brembo eventually 

designed and patented the 

T Pillar ventilation in 2004, 

used mainly on the Iveco 

range of heavy vehicles. As 

the name suggests, the outer 

pillars are characterised by 

their T-shape proving particularly 

effective for use on 

heavy commercial and industrial 

vehicles. 

In 2010, Brembo innovated 

further by introducing 

Star Pillar ventilation where 

star-shaped pillars dissipate 

heat better, reducing the risk 

of a thermal disc shock and 

extending pad life. 

With PVT Plus, Brembo 

now presents a new stage in 

the evolution of ventilation 

of brake discs – all in the interest 

of safety.

Autofarm. For Porsche 

owners your car couldn’t 

be in any safer hands! 

THE UK has always 

been an important 

market for Porsche – 

from the mid-1950s 

on British enthusiasts 

took a shine to the manufacturer’s 

sports cars and that 

relationship has continued to 

this day. 

Down the years many independent 

Porsche specialists 

have sprung up, but there 

can’t be another that matches 

the history and today enjoys 

the same reputation as 

Oxfordshire-based Autofarm. 

The business was founded in 

1973 by Josh Sadler and Steve 

Barr, who saw an opening for 

a Porsche specialist to cater 

for that expanding enthusiast 

base. 

Originally based in Iver, 

Buckinghamshire, a year later 

Autofarm took on Jack Philips 

as a technician and Josh 

Sadler’s wife, Sue came on 

board in 1975, initially to run 

the stores. 

In 1977 Autofarm upped 

sticks and moved a few miles 

to Amersham-on-the Hill where 

there was not only a workshop 

and offices but a small showroom 

as well, and by the mid- 

1980s the business was strong 

enough to employs 20 people. 

Several initiatives were introduced, 

including replacement 

exhaust systems and glassfibre 

body panels. 

Business grew thanks to 

Josh Sadler and Steve Barr 

running Porsches in numerous 

club events and they helped 

create a production Porsche 

race series, and if that wasn’t 

enough to keep them occupied 

the business moved from 

Amersham to Tring where Autofarm 

held main dealer franchises 

for Suzuki and Saab, a 

short-lived move that didn’t 

work as planned but prompted 

the business to deal solely

That prompted a move out to 

Penn, near Beaconsfield, which 

saw Josh Sadler going it alone, 

later being joined by Jack 

Phillips and Mike Evans. And 

once again Autofarm moved, in 

1993 heading to Oxfordshire, 

not far from the M40, in some 

historic farm buildings. 

Business was more than 

buzzing on the day The Garage 

paid a visit: Autofarm’s international 

reputation and the 

high regard it’s held in means 

Porsches of all ages – not just 

911s but 928s, Boxsters and 

even Cayennes – are in for servicing, 

repairs or restoration 

work. And for the owner who 

doesn’t always have the time to 

drive their Porsche, Autofarm 

offers a storage facility too. 

Two years ago Steve Wood 

and Mikey Wastie bought the 

business and they are building 

on its success through every 

aspect of owning and running 

a Porsche. Whether it’s a routine 

service or bare-shell restoration, 

Autofarm can take 

that work on as we saw with a 

late-1980s 911 in for what was 

initially to repaint a couple of 

panels but ended up being a 

full-on restoration, including a 

colour change. 

“We will restore a car but 

we aim to keep as much of the 

original panels and components 

as we can – it’s all about 

the cars,” Steve says. 

And such is the diversity of 

the work tackled even the way 

a customer is greeted is addressed 

in a way meeting that 

diversity, as Steve explains: 

“We have two managers on the 

front desk, one dealing with 

projects and one dealing with 

servicing. We have three technicians 

in the service department, 

three on projects (the 

restoration work and anything 

that will take longer than a 

week) and one in the engine department, 

which handles any 

aspect of engine rebuilding. 

To Autofarm, the value of 

any Porsche is in its history, 

and any car coming in for work 

– no matter how small that job 

might be – is catalogued and 

work detailed on that record. 

It’s a trait that goes back to the 

business’ earliest days when 

Josh Sadler began compiling 

a list of 2.7 RS models. The 

company has long been associated 

with this 911 derivative 

and finding long-lost examples, 

including one from Beirut 

which received a sympathetic 

re-commissioning rather than 

a full restoration. 

But such is Autofarm’s enthusiasm 

for all Porsches the 

business doesn’t look to take 

on any restoration work just 

like that, as Steve explains: 

“We’re not a run-of-the-mill 

restorer – we’ll always give 

someone guidance on the best 

course of action.” 

The clientele ranges from 

enthusiasts who’ve bought 

their first Porsche and want 

it serviced through to the serious 

collectors, but what remains 

crucial to the business’ 

success is the relationship 

between customers and staff. 

Says Steve: “Our customers 

know our technicians and we 

like to hear that cars are being 

driven and enjoyed.” 

Looking after such a wide 

range of cars means Autofarm 

needs different forms of diagnostics 

tools to cover more 

recent models, something not 

needed on the earlier cars, 

but the product knowledge of 

Autofarm’s staff is invaluable 

– and inspiring for customers. 

A first-rate business in a 

first-rate location and working 

on interesting cars - working at 

Autofarm is always going to be 

busy but it’ll be enjoyable too, 

and for Porsche owners knowing 

their car is in such safe 

hands can’t be bad either.

Deconstructed 

A 

BUSINESS shaped 

into a catalytic converter 

manufacturer, 

when demand 

for the product 

surged around 20 years ago, 

BM Catalysts’ manufacturing 

capabilities and expertise 

have come a long way since 

hand-bending their first 

units in the late ‘90s. Nowadays, 

the technical specifications, 

production processes 

and sheer knowledge the 

company administers when 

developing such products 

are industry-leading and 

keep them one step ahead of 

the competition. Here we deconstruct 

each section of the 

product to take a look at just 

what goes into producing a 

BM Catalysts catalyst. 

A catalytic converter (cat) 

is an emissions control device 

that works to reduce the 

level of harmful exhaust gasses 

that are released, from 

a vehicle, into the atmosphere. 

In the UK, it is a legal 

requirement for vehicles 

to be fitted with a cat as part 

of Euro Emissions standards, 

aimed at improving 

air quality. The more recent 

type approval legislation 

(introduced in 2009) states 

that vehicles registered after 

March 2001 must be fitted 

with a homologated (type 

approved) cat, which meet 

more stringent emissions 

levels. 

Located after the engine, a 

cat works by converting toxic 

gasses into less harmful 

ones as they pass through 

the unit. Catalytic converters 

contain a precious metal 

coating, which sparks 

a chemical reaction as the 

gasses pass through. The 

detrimental elements; hydrocarbons, 

carbon monoxide 

and nitrogen oxides, are 

converted into less harmful 

ones; water, carbon dioxide 

and nitrogen, therefore reducing 

the impact emissions 

cause to the environment. 

A cat is assembled from 

a number of different components 

and materials. Over 

90% of the components in 

BM Catalysts products are 

produced in-house, allowing 

full traceability and control 

over the manufactured products, 

and therefore ensuring 

consistency in output. 

There are two key elements 

of a catalyst that depict the 

vehicle in which they fit: the 

catalyst section – containing 

the monolith, matting and 

can – and the fitment section 

– containing the pipework, 

end cones, manifold 

and fittings. 

BM Catalysts’ monoliths 

are ceramic, and are coated 

with a combination of precious 

metals that produce 

the chemical reaction to 

convert harmful gasses into 

less harmful ones, when the 

catalyst is at operating temperature 

(around 300 C). 

The precious metals in the 

coating are made up of a 

combination of platinum, 

palladium and rhodium. 

They come in a range of precious 

metal combinations, 

shapes, lengths and diameters; 

all dependent on the 

vehicle fitment requirement. 

Also included in the range 

at BM Catalysts are 200, 

400 and 600 CPSI (cells 

per square inch). 409 grade 

stainless steel is used to 

create the outer can (due to 

its strength endurance and 

corrosion resistance) which 

contains the monolith and 

matting. The matting acts 

as a support between the inner 

and outer components.

ent designs including round 

and flat catalysts. During 

manufacture of a round 

catalyst, an I.O. swaging machine 

is used to perfectly size 

the internal diameter of the 

outer metal can (also known 

as the mantle). This process 

ensures the correct gap is 

achieved, between the inside 

of the can and the monolith, 

therefore giving the optimal 

holding force on the monolith. 

This gap is where the 

matting collects. The matting 

is designed to provide 

just the right density to nullify 

the differences between 

the metal can’s thermal expansion 

and the monolith. 

Using the correct matting 

density is essential to avoid 

loose and rattling cats (when 

too low) as well as cracks in 

monoliths (when too high). 

The matting used in BM 

Catalysts products is also 

designed to have a lower 

erosion profile compared to 

traditional expanding mats, 

and is certified as a Class- 

Zero, True Green Support 

Mat System; meaning it is 

safe for their staff and other 

handlers of the product as it 

contains no Refractory Ceramic 

Fibres (RCF). 

The remaining components 

of a cat are present 

mainly to ensure secure fit 

to the vehicle. The pipework 

sections are also made from 

409 grade stainless steel 

tube. This particular material 

is suitable for pipe sections 

due to its malleability, 

strength and corrosion resistance. 

Pipes are cut, bent 

and sized on hi-tech CNC 

machinery, ensuring consistent 

production accuracy 

and O.E. standard air flow. 

Flanges, lambda bosses, 

brackets and other fittings 

are the smaller components 

which provide the finishing 

touches to the cat, and furthermore 

assist in determining 

the exact fitment of each 

unit: Flanges, which join the 

cat to the next section of the 

exhaust, are manufactured 

on seven metre long CNC 

plasma cutting beds. The 

plasma ‘cuts’ each individual 

flange into shape, then 

the component undergoes 

the required drilling, threading 

and machining on a CNC 

Milling Machine, dependent 

on the required finish specification. 

The lambda boss 

sensor ports are produced 

on CNC lathes which run for 

24 hours a day. The lathes 

automatically feed solid bar 

through the cutting, sizing 

and threading process. 

Brackets, like flanges, are 

plasma cut into shape into a 

2D profile, and then folded 

to the required form by a 

CNC Press brake. 

A maniverter catalyst 

would also involve a manifold 

section, which allows 

the unit to be bolted straight 

onto the engine cylinders. 

The manifold component is 

made up of a number collectors/channels 

which transport 

the gasses from the 

engine cylinders to the catalyst. 

A four-cylinder engine 

will require a four-branch 

manifold. 

Maniverter catalysts and 

close coupled catalysts are 

designed to allow the gas 

conversion to take place 

close to the engine; where 

the gasses are at their hottest, 

and therefore where the 

conversion is most efficient. 

Over the years, emissions 

standards have become increasingly 

stringent, which 

has led to the catalyst section 

– containing the monolith, 

matting and precious metals 

– being located closer to the 

engine (on maniverters and 

close coupled cats), than on 

underfloor-style cats. 

As emissions standards 

continue to become tougher 

to reach, vehicle manufacturers 

are now starting to 

put additional catalytic converters 

onto their vehicles to 

ensure limits can be hit. Vehicles 

that used to have one 

catalyst on for Euro 4 level 

are now sometimes having 

two fitted for Euro 6 levels.

battery sales into a

With winter spreading its effects across 

the country there are plenty of cars 

that won’t be starting come the first 

cold snap. And while battery sales 

have slightly spread more across the 

year, it’s the winter that sends sales into a spike as 

tired batteries give up the ghost for the final time. 

The sales spread is better for retailers, who do 

not need to keep quite as many batteries in stock 

as they once did. But as with so many other replacement 

parts, the battery segment has become more 

complicated with the rise of stop-start systems and 

increasingly high levels of luxury, convenience and 

entertainment facilities. 

It all adds up to a more complicated but buoyant, 

profitable segment. And with battery failures being 

the biggest cause of breakdowns, motorists need to 

be assured their car’s battery is in the best condition. 

Yuasa says that during its battery-testing workshop 

trial 11 percent of cars needed a replacement battery 

and 27 percent required recharging or reconditioning.

shops should encourage motorists 

to charge their car’s 

battery on a regular basis. 

And when a replacement is required, 

fitting exactly the right 

replacement is vital, one supplier 

says. 

Says Hella: “Counter staff 

should always check whether 

any extra high demand electrical 

equipment has been added 

to the vehicle, as this could 

affect the specification. In addition, 

offering to test every 

customer’s battery, irrespective 

of why they have come through 

the door, not only promotes 

good customer relations, it also 

opens up sales opportunities. 

“Bearing in mind that battery-related 

issues remain the 

most common cause of breakdown, 

whatever the season, 

battery health should be a 

priority for workshops. Therefore, 

as a matter of course, 

technicians should carry out 

a battery check on every vehicle 

that enters their premises, 

which allows preventative 

maintenance to be undertaken. 

Alongside this practical action, 

technicians should be recommending 

that customers that 

use their vehicles infrequently 

or make only short journeys, 

charge the battery on a regular 

basis, which will substantially 

reduce the risk of electrical related 

breakdown.” 

Stop-start cars have given 

Yuasa’s battery testing kit offers workshops a 

useful extra revenue stream, and following on 

from its ‘Always Check the Battery’ programme 

around a quarter of cars (27 percent) require a 

battery recharge. 

The Workshop Testing Kit includes a tester 

that indicates a battery’s condition and provides 

a voltage reading – it also comes with some 

point-of-sale material to help generate extra 

income which can, in some cases, amount to 

330,000 a year, Yuasa says. 

“There are huge benefits to all workshops 

participating in our Always Check The Battery 

programme. Besides increasing battery sales 

and revenue, workshops will also dramatically 

the battery replacement market

demand for them will continue 

to rise as more cars fitted with 

the system drift into the aftermarket. 

Recognising the market’s 

expansion Banner has introduced 

three Running Bull replacements, 

two (rated at 65 

Ah and 75Ah) covering Ford 

vehicles fitted with stop-start 

systems. Another battery rated 

at 80Ah targets VAG cars. 

Banner batteries are fitted 

as OE by many car makers, 

including Aston Martin, Caterham, 

Lotus, Morgan and Rolls- 

Royce, while its EFB types are 

found in small- and mediumsized 

cars.

EFB battery technology continues 

to gain momentum in 

the UK aftermarket and we are 

confident that the new Running 

Bull part numbers will help 

consolidate Banner’s position 

within what is an increasingly 

important sector. Furthermore, 

the new-to-range part numbers 

not only demonstrate Banner’s 

standing as a complete solutions 

provider, they reflect and 

support the Group’s growing 

OE pedigree, says Banner UK 

country manager, Lee Quinney. 

But just how frequently are 

stop-start batteries being replaced? 

According to Ecobat, 

not as frequently as perhaps 

they should be, as many drivers 

switch off their car’s stopstart 

system which in turn prolongs 

battery life. 

According to Ecobat: “Because 

most drivers tend to deactivate 

the start/stop system,

“In our experience, the main barriers to workshops 

implementing a battery testing regime can

with an accurate tester, but also the information, 

guidance and point of sales material 

they need to make the scheme a success. The

quicker after some practice.”

fifth.” 

Ecobat offers a range of tools 

for testing, fault-finding and 

installing AGM batteries, saying 

any time a car is in for servicing 

or repairs, the battery 

should be tested as a matter of 

course. 

“A battery testing tool is an 

essential aid for workshops as 

it can provide accurate readings, 

without the need to remove 

the battery. The device 

also tells the condition of both 

AGM and SLI batteries meaning 

that technicians can determine 

the battery’s state of 

charge, starting capacity, electrical 

consumption and charging 

voltage, so that they can 

assess the health of the battery 

and, if necessary, apply the precise 

charging regime to keep it 

in the best possible condition,” 

Ecobat says. 

“Should an AGM battery 

need replacing, technicians can 

turn to another tool that will 

allow them install the battery 

with confidence. The battery 

validation tool (BVT) follows 

a ‘connect and reset’ process 

through a simple six-button/ 

LED graphics display, meaning 

they can view the order 

to validate the replacement. 

When connected, the BVT will 

go through the reset procedure 

to correctly introduce and integrate 

the battery into the vehicle’s 

electronic systems.”

Gone are the days when changing a car’s battery took 

as long as a kettle to boil, and as no cars are the same, 

technicians need to know what they’re doing come batterychange 

time. Sometimes even finding a battery is hard 

enough, but replacing AGM types requires a thorough 

understanding of the work involved. 

“While in the past it 

was possible to simply 

disconnect the terminals 

and replace the battery, 

perhaps only with the 

precaution of ensuring a 

supply charge was present, 

the latest vehicles present 

a far greater challenge. 

Uninformed battery 

disconnection is likely to 

cause a loss of the settings 

and the memory functions 

of the vehicle’s electronic 

parts and the new battery could well need to be registered, 

or the direct shift gearbox have to be reset to its factory 

settings, in order for the vehicle to start or to placate the 

warning lights on the dashboard,” says Shaun Greasley, 

commercial director of TecAlliance UK and Ireland. 

“The whole process is also far more labour intensive 

and sometimes even requires information as to where 

the battery is located, as they are often no longer housed 

within the engine bay. It is therefore vital that workshops 

know the repair time in advance so they can accurately 

quote for the job.

And as cars have changed, so too 

have tyres. A modern car wouldn’t work 

well with crossplies or earlier radial 

designs, and today’s tyres also have to 

cope with reducing noise and helping 

achieve greater fuel economy through 

reduced rolling resistance. 

But while the demand for tyres is 

phenomenal, for a long time many 

workshops just didn’t bother getting 

involved. It was something handled by 

the fast-fits, and independent garages 

were often reluctant to get involved.

to be had from tyres is greater

drivers. Their improved adaptability, 

meaning their strength 

lies well beyond just the coldest, 

iciest roads has helped 

their cause. 

Falken’s Eurowinter HS01

Working hand in hand with 

tyres on recent cars is the tyre 

pressure monitoring system 

(TPMS) and for cars registered 

after 1 January 2012 and fitted 

with TPMS, the system must 

be functioning to pass the MoT 

test. Yet, says campaign group 

Tyresafe, many drivers are ignoring 

an illuminated warning 

light. 

Such is the scale of the problem 

that the number of TPMSrelated 

MoT test failures rose 

by more than 200 percent between 

2015 and 2016. But syscontinued

Following the recent success of the Tyred Campaign 

for an outright ‘Ban’ of all tyres older than ten years 

on commercial vehicles by Frances Molloy whose son 

Michael (18) died with Kerry Ogden (23) and driver Colin 

Daulby (53) in a catastrophic coach crash caused by the 

explosive failure of a secondhand 20 year old tyre which 

recently gained even more support from nationwide 

MP’s and Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn. 

The increasingly successful campaign has now taken 

yet another step closer to being legally recognised as 

Liverpool Labour MP – Maria Eagle (pictured) presented 

an Early Day Motion along with a ten minute Rule Bill 

on Thursday 12th October at the Houses of Parliament. 

Then on Tuesday 31st 

October the proposed 

new Tyre Law Bill will 

be fully presented in 

Parliament. 

This is not the first 

time the Bill has been 

heard in Parliament as it 

was proposed in 2016 

but never reached a 

‘second reading’ due 

to lack of Parliamentary 

support. However both 

Maria Eagle and Frances Molloy are confident that this 

time the Bill will succeed and progress towards the next 

stage of the proposed legislation becoming Law. 

Maria says, “This simple piece of legislation will not 

cost anything for the Government to implement but 

will save lives. A change in the law is long overdue as 

quite frankly it is unbelievable that commercial vehicles 

including buses and coaches are still allowed to carry 

passengers without any legal age limit on the tyres that 

are fitted.” 

Frances adds, “This development is a massive 

step forward for the campaign which we never really 

expected to materialise so soon after Tyred was 

launched in the summer. Securing the Early Day Motion 

and Ten minute Rule Bill will significantly increase our 

ability to lobby members of Parliament and eventually 

bring about the ‘common sense’ change in tyre law that 

we are looking for.

the award has been given in Yokohama’s 

100th year. 

“It really is an honour to receive 

the prestigious Marketing

been possible without the fantastic

in their own right,” says Yokohama

HH Lions Equipment 

HH Lions equipment, the UK’s largest

Abu Dhabi

Paint Technician Daryl 

Head, from NCRC Swindon, 

travelled to Abu Dhabi this 

week where he is competing 

in the final of the WorldSkills 

competition, representing 

the UK and Nationwide 

Crash Repair Centres. As 

part of Team UK Daryl will 

compete against other young 

people from across the world 

over the course of four days, 

each day holding different 

challenges designed to test 

the competitors in every aspect 

of car painting. 

Daryl’s journey began back 

in 2012 when he started his 

apprenticeship in paint just 

days after he left school. 

Since then he has gone on 

to compete in the National 

Skills Competition and be 

named Nationwide Apprentice 

of the Year. Three years 

after beginning his training, 

Daryl was scouted to join 

Team UK during a Skill Auto 

competition, and earlier this 

year he was named as the 

UK representative in his 

discipline for WorldSkills 

2017. 

Daryl said: “I’ve been all 

over the place preparing (for 

the competition), I’ve been 

to Denmark and I’ve been 

to Northern Ireland two or 

three times. I’ve done a lot 

of training at Thatcham and 

both Thatcham and Nationwide 

have been really supportive.” 

Sunday 15th October will 

see Daryl put all his hard 

work and training with Nationwide, 

Thatcham Research 

and WorldSkills into 

action as he begins the first 

of what is sure to be a tough 

and pressured series of 

challenges. Not only is Daryl 

competing to win the gold 

medal, but he could also 

win the Medallion of Excellence, 

which is available to 

all competitors. He said: “To 

be awarded the Medallion 

of Excellence means you’ve 

scored over 75% of the 

marks in the competition, so 

to win that would be a great 

achievement as well.”
