APPRENTICESHIPS 

Kirklees College is officially one of the best large training providers in the country 

when it comes to Apprenticeships. We’re currently 5th in the UK in the Government’s 

National Achievement Rate Tables for Providers with over 1,000 Apprentices. 

We offer an array of fantastic opportunities, with over 2,400 apprentices working for 

around 1,000 employers across multiple sector areas. We have an enviable track record of 

quality and success, built up over many years working in partnership with our employers. 

Kirklees College has a dedicated Business Development Team who work closely with 

employers to help them access a wide range of high quality training and development, 

including Apprenticeships that are tailored to your needs. We provide advice, guidance 

and assistance on all aspects, such as funding, recruitment and delivery right through to 

completion. Our aim is to demystify and help you cut through what can be a confusing 

landscape and keep bureaucracy to a minimum. 

At Kirklees College we aim to develop and stretch your apprentice to give them every 

opportunity to reach their full potential and achieve their goals, evidenced by our 

excellent achievement rates. We will help you provide your apprentice(s) with the skills 

they need for the world of work and specifically for the job you need them to do, so they 

achieve the standard required to be a qualified apprentice at the end of their training. 

With the college, it’s not just about getting a qualification - we also do lots with the 

apprentice to boost their general confidence, work skills and employability by instilling 

the correct behaviours. Most of our Apprenticeships will include relevant, nationally 

recognised and valued qualifications, even where they are not mandatory, in order to 

provide the essential structure and ‘currency’ sometimes lacking with other Training 

Providers. 

The college has a number of brand new, state-of-the-art purpose built centres, with 

exceptional resources, that provide an excellent, up-to-date learning environment for all 

our apprentices and which will support the training and assessment we also do at your 

premises or on-site.

HOW TO RECRUIT AN APPRENTICE 

Contact us to let us know what Apprenticeship programme you specifically need. We 

can discuss costs and how to make use of any funding available. You can then decide 

whether you want to recruit your apprentice yourself or us to help you recruit. 

We will make sure you get the right candidate for your company, that they are on the 

right course and that they achieve their qualification. 

KIRKLEES COLLEGE RECRUITS FOR YOU 

RECRUIT AN APPRENTICE YOURSELF 

1. Discuss your needs and how college 

will manage the recruitment process on 

your behalf. 

2. We work with you to create a job 

description and vacancy identifying 

specialist requirements and then we will 

advertise your vacancy. 

3. All applicants will be screened and 

interviewed by the college. Those meeting 

your requirements will be selected for 

you to put through your own interview or 

recruitment process. 

4. Once your apprentice is in post, you’ll 

be allocated a dedicated account manager 

to support you throughout. 

1. We will agree the role that you want 

the college to play in supporting you and 

you can advertise your vacancy. 

2. College interviews your candidate(s) to 

assess suitability. Please note you may put 

forward your own candidate. 

3. Apprenticeship is confirmed and you 

can appoint them to your company in the 

usual way.

APPRENTICESHIP FAQS 

Can I set criteria for shortlisting potential apprentices? 

Yes, employers are encouraged to be involved in the selection and shortlisting process. 

There are standard entry requirements we follow depending on the level of the 

Apprenticeship. 

What are my costs for an apprentice for tuition fees and salary? 

Non-Levy paying company fees: Tuition fees vary from £1,500 to £27,000 depending 

on industry, job and level. 

Levy paying companies pay full fees out of their Digital Account. If digital account 

funds are insufficient, anything above is paid at 10% of the fee salary: you must pay at 

least national minimum wage which is £3.50 per hour (from September 2017). You can 

pay more than this rate and many employers increase wages as skills develop. Research 

shows apprentices earn an average of £170 per week.

Are there funding grants to help with costs? 

All companies taking on an Apprentice aged 16-18 on their start date will 

automatically qualify for an incentive payment from the government of £1,000 per 

apprentice, which is paid in two equal instalments of £500, after 3 months and 12 

months, providing the apprentice remains employed at these milestone stages. 

How long does an Apprenticeship take? 

It will depend on the qualification, but most are between one and four years and are 

not permitted to last less than 365 days. 

Is there an age limit for Apprenticeships? 

Apprentices must have reached the legal age to work full time but there is no upper 

age limit. 

How many hours per week will my Apprentice work? 

Apprentices generally work between 30 and 40 hours a week. Apprentices aged 

16/17 are not legally permitted to work in excess of 40 hours per week under the 

‘Working Time Regulations’. All apprentices must by law spend a minimum of 20% of 

their contracted, paid working hours averaged over a year undertaking off-the-job 

training towards their Apprenticeship (excluding maths and English). Generally, one 

day per week will be in college, (dependent on sector area).

Training can take place at your premises or at one of our centres 

across Kirklees. 

We can also advise on funding your courses through available 

grants.

ENQUIRE: 

Contact us to find out how we can help you develop your workforce of the 

future. Providing a work placement gives you the chance to try before your buy 

and you will be supporting our students in gaining real work skills.

REGISTER: 

One of our team will visit you to explain the programme and agree a process 

tailored to your company. We will complete our work placement registration 

documentation with you including job details and requirements, health and safety 

and service level agreement.

SELECT: 

You can choose from relevant CVs, conduct formal interviews or we can select 

suitable candidates for you. We will confirm details of the student, placement 

dates and times and specific requirements.
