What exactly defines the gender of an article of
clothing? Apart from the inconsequential
placement of button plackets and their
merchandising destination, apparel is purely a
utilitarian method of protection, sanitation and
modesty. Even suggesting that gender fluidity in
fashion is a groundbreaking concept seems
ridiculous. The issue here lies in a cultural
mindset that has been ingrained into our societal
perspective deeming colors, shapes and fabrics
exclusively suitable for certain irrelevant gender
categorizations. A shirt is still a shirt on a woman
or a man. As we move forward, let us consider
outfitting our bodies in shirts, jackets and pants
that make us feel our best. Opening our minds to
garments that speak to us regardless of their
gender orientation is really the most intuitive,
authentic practice. The alternative of dismissing a
t-shirt, sweater or pair of denim baselessly
targeting the opposite gender is silly, isn’t it?
