But Marc Sweeney wasn’t going for the long ball; he<br />

had a ballsy strategy of his own. His first bunt attempt fouled<br />

off of his foot, but the second one landed between him and<br />

the pitcher’s mound. Flaherty, who had a good lead at third,<br />

made a break for home. <strong>The</strong> pitcher took the bait. Scooping<br />

up the ball, Young threw to first. Sweeney was out easily, but<br />

Jaskewicz — who was a lot faster than he looked — foiled<br />

the Wildcat double-play attempt by successfully sliding into<br />

second.<br />

“All tied up with two outs,” Tom sighed, looking up<br />

at the old Harne’s Pharmacy scoreboard.<br />

Billy grimaced. “Déjà vu all over again.”<br />

Tom watched the Warrior second baseman walk up to<br />

the plate. “If Rebuth gets on base you gotta bring him home,<br />

Billy.” He turned to Billy and there were tears in his eyes.<br />

“You know I can’t.”<br />

Billy did know. After Billy, Tom was next to bat. And<br />

Tom hadn’t had a hit since mid-September. Billy nodded.<br />

Without another word, he stood up and made his way over to<br />

the on deck circle.<br />

As Billy picked up his bat and gave it a warm-up<br />

swing, Rebuth took a swing at the plate and missed. Strike<br />

one.<br />

“Wait for the pitch, Buth!” a Warrior shouted from<br />

the dugout.<br />

After a quick glance over his left shoulder to ensure<br />

Jaskewicz wasn’t going to try and steal third, Young made<br />

his second pitch. Rebuth made contact and sent the ball soaring<br />

high above the third baseline. For a second, it looked like<br />

it was going to stay fair, but the wind carried the ball foul as<br />

it came in for a landing.<br />

But from the on deck circle, Billy wasn’t following<br />

the ball. At the moment, he was distracted by the Wildcat in<br />

the outfield.<br />
