<strong>The</strong> thumps coming from Tyler’s trunk didn’t stop until he crossed into Warren County.<br />

He needed a drink, something strong enough to knock the hair off his nuts, as his<br />

brother Joel used to say, but Tyler couldn’t risk stopping, not yet. That old biddy had<br />

heard the commotion and come out on her front stoop as he was leaving Della’s house<br />

in Royston. She’d seen his face and had probably jotted down his license plate number.<br />

No doubt she called the cops.<br />

Cigarettes. He had smokes. But he was thirsty. Abso-fucking-lutely parched.<br />

Don’t even think about it, he told himself. Put it outta your head. Joel would’ve told him to<br />

send that thought packing. Keep driving, he would’ve said. Make your Goodyears hum.<br />

Under normal circumstances Tyler would have relished the warm summer air rushing<br />

in through the open windows, but these were light years from normal circumstances.<br />

Now, the cigarettes. Tyler eyed the floorboard, then the passenger seat. He could’ve<br />

sworn he left them on the seat next to him, but that was before he went into Della’s<br />
