Inspiration, Influences
The work of photographers’ Vivian Maier, Mary Ellen Mark and Gregory Crewdson informs the film’s aesthetic and thematic focus.
Vivian Maier’s beautiful street photography wasn’t discovered after her death and her story and unique view of the world forms a deep
underlying truth for Martha.
Mary Ellen Mark’s critically lauded, long running series, PROM, is a particular inspiration for Martha’s photoshoot in the climatic scenes at the
end of the film.
Gregory Crewdson’s large format atmospheric images of small town USA feed an underlying sense of isolation and the mood of the film. Sofia
Coppola’s effortless ability to connect with the emotional life of her female characters (particularly THE VIRGIN SUICIDES and LOST IN
TRANSLATION) and David Fincher’s seamless integration of story, performance and design, together with his exacting framing, are also key
influences.
